This might be more of a compliment towards Bill Polian than Tony Dungy but I think people generally underrate the Colts defensive approach during those years. They were 1 of the first teams to realize how much more sustainable/efficient it was to put most of their resources into offense. They spent like 2/1 on the offensive side of the ball so their defense always had to do more with less. Always losing key FAs because $ went into the offensive side of the ball.
They ran 1 of the simplest defenses in the league but drafting a bunch of fast guys who could tackle helped them limit big plays and make teams be patient and sustain drives. When going against a team with an elite offense this is hard to do. They couldn't stop the run most years but sticking to the running game when you are playing that offense isn't easy.
Their D was better than people think as the years went on...'06 it played excellent in the playoffs, '07 it was a very good unit until Freeney had lisfranc surgery, '09 they basically went undefeated and the D was solid
