You gotta love some great answers here with Mickey Mantle, ALI, Larry Bird, Dr J, Clemente, especially Mickey Mantle, and so on..

Who the hell is John Stampe and Jim Zorn, especially John Stampe?

Steve M, I appreciate the compliment, and yes, you're not along, most kids did grow up looking up to me as their hero..

BP,

You grew up a decade earlier than me, and you were obviously a Habs fan, so if anything, it does shock me that you looked up to Naslund. He really wasn't that exciting.. If anything, I would have thought you'd idolize Stephane Richer instead. He played during your days as a fan of the Habs in the 80, was a 50 goal scorer, fast as lightning, and exciting as hell and a fan favorite. The Naslund one caught me off guard.

Jay Leno,

Don't be a wiseass

what really shocks me here is an answer like Jay Leno.. He just picked 4 stars from the 80's. I really thought we'd all have only 1 player that we loved while growing up, and not 4 players. I really thought it would be a local player of our team. Like if you were from Philly in the 80's, you had to pick Schmidt as your hero. If you were from Boston in the 70's, had to be Bird, or Bobby Orr. If you are from LA, you had to pick Magic or Kareem. If you were from Chicago in the 80's and 90's growing up, you had to pick Jordan.. But it seems like everyone has more than 1 player, this is shocking to me. I really thought it would be our favorite player watching our favorite team, like in my case. I never would have imagined it would be 3 or 4 players.. I thought we all had 1 idol and only 1..

Sir Muny, if I can interject a quick story here. I was too old for him to be an idol.

When I was a sophomore, playing Frosh/Soph at a rival Red Division school. You remember frosh/soph and the Red Division don't you. I'm sure you also know that a "clincher" is not a wrestling hold but something you catch with no glove.

Anyway, during Butkus' senior year, I was brought up to the varsity for a playoff game against CVS. I was only put on special teams and it would be tempting to add that I was somehow hit by him or that I got a lick in on him but that didn't happen. It was good enough to play in the same game with him.

As you remember no doubt Sr, he was probably better known as a fullback that picked up 8 or 9 yards per carry back then. Sorry, just reminiscing.
