The bride and the groom should pay for the wedding. Both of our parents chipped in some money and we paid for the rest. No way in hell you should feel obligated to pay for her wedding, especially what some couples spend now. Best to find out what their plans are and tell them you will contribute x amount of dollars and that's the end of it. No reason to go into debt for bankrolling an expensive wedding.

To me a wedding and a funeral only differ by a lack of a casket at a wedding,

Uh, one is a celebration and one isn't...that's a pretty significant difference. People also don't give gifts to honor someone's death.

Weddings and what goes with the whole ordeal are one of the biggest ripoffs in our nation. From the dress, hall, band, catering, cake and tip for the minister is way out of line. With an over 50% divorce rate why would you succumb to the womans ideas when its better to take the $ and invest.

See the BTJ rant about Tom Cruise spending like 3 million on dresses for his wedding ! (EOG).

My daughter got married 3 weeks ago. I paid for the reception- food and open bar all night, and a lot of the other shit. Groom's dad paid for tuxes, photographer, rehearsal dinner. Last big thing I could do for my daughter. Worth every penny.

Whoever gets married to someone who wants things she can't afford is going to pay the most

We went and got married on our own. I thank god everyday that my wife didn't want a wedding. We figured it was better to put the money as downpayment on the house.

I agree with FHM's comments, she will be grateful.

this is the route i want to go.

assuming we'd be paying for the wedding, we'd be lucky to break even, so in that case i'd rather just use money for house.

The problem is, Weddings are Not Cheap when it comes to Large Families & friends

Marriage license in New York is $35. If a couple does not have enough money to comfortably cover the costs, why are they spending the money on much of anything else?

The bride's parents should pay as much as they can afford to.

If the couple wants a more expensive wedding, they they pay for it themselves.

How the hell do you do 45K on a wedding? Sorry, but this is flat out STUPID. There are ways to get around it and pay a minimum of 10K. My wife and I paid about 7K, that was for 100 people, reception, open bar, sit down dinner. Hell, most of it you can recoup on cash gifts.
