From everything I've heard about coach Tuberville is he's a good family man and well like by those who know him. He did a nice job at Auburn (85-40) and owned Alabama (7-3). Tubbs got on the wrong side of a couple of high profile Auburn backers who wanted him gone and eventually he was forced out. He led the Tigers to a 13-0 record in 2004 and was named national coach of the year. I'm not sure that he and former coach Pat Dye were on the same page. Dye swings a big stick at Auburn.

I'd treat to Albertross, Conan, Coach, Clover, RT, and the Oklahoma guys. Been around here for awhile and you each have enlightened me in one way or another over the years.

And as an ASU alum and former player, you are correct that Tempe is a beautiful place and it's a great school. Problem goes to population density. The high schools there just dont produce enough of 4* and 5* talent to sustain the local schools. For instance, A&M took Christian Kirk and Kyle Allen. Both were the best players coming out of the state of AZ in '14/'15. Also having USC/UCLA next door (4 hr drive) kids can leave there and go to higher profile schools. Finally, coaching dynamics at ASU (one of the reasons I lobbied for Sumlin over Graham few years back) help as well as ASU has not had a dynamic HC since the days of John Cooper who I played for years ago. Most forgot that Cooper coached there before going to tOSU, Also, most of the growth in population in Arizona has come from people moving there, so they have allegiances to other teams. Hence, if they are a good athlete, they'll look to go elsewhere rather than stay in-state.

WinOne, Coach Cooper was there only three years (85-87) but he won 25 games including the 1986 Rose Bowl. Not sure what years you played there but that 86 season (10-1-1) had to be a special one.

I'm a lot older than you and growing up I always admired Frank Kush (176-54-1). He was a mean SOB but he got the most out of his Sun Devil players. Not sure I would have wanted to play for him from some of the stories I've heard.

As far as recruiting, you're right about the limited number of top caliber players available in Arizona. California is just next door and the right coach should be able to bring in top tier players especially with the improved football facilities there in Tempe. Beautiful campus and Tempe looks to be a nice city (never been there).

I open this forum because of the wonderful history here at RX regarding being the best college football forum on the net. The past few seasons have theRX the place to watch for CFB news. I mentioned some of my three favorites, but there are many.

The Alabama football program continues to be the department's bread winner, topping the $100 million mark for the first time with a record $103.9 million in revenue in 2016. The football program's biggest revenue sources came from ticket sales ($37.3 million) and media rights , which brought in $20.8 million. Private contributions were around $29 million.

Yeah, Saban's worth every penny the university pays him!

SEC West - Four of seven schools in the tough SEC West Division will have new offensive coordinators this season.

Brian Daboll (Alabama) Daboll has solid credentials as an NFL position coach, just not as an offensive coordinator in college ball. It's rumored that Saban wants to return to more power football this season.

Chip Lindsey (Auburn) With transfer quarterback Jarrett Stidham (Baylor) on campus, Lindsey has a chance to be a big success if he can keep Malzahn out of his ear.

Matt Canada (LSU) Canada inherits a mixed bag at quarterback, but ton's of playmakers everywhere else. Quarterback will be the key for the Tigers' offense. What else is new in Baton Rouge?

Phil Longo (Ole Miss) Longo is walking into a mess with the NCAA hovering over the football program. He helped Sam Houston State lead the FCS in several offensive categories. Big numbers in the Southland Conference and the SEC are two different things.

Will be fun to watch the development of each schools offense.......................

Worth every CRIMSON penny. I read an article a few years ago after he led Bama to the first title. Freshman applications to Alabama went up 30% year over year, donations (not only to athletics) to the school went up 40% which means you can build more libraries and labs, and bring in top flight professors, etc.

I was there. I was recruited by Darryl Rodgers and stayed through Coach Cooper. It was a very exciting time. I think if ASU could ever get a dynamic recruiter, they could make some headway recruiting in Cali and Texas. Those are the two hotbeds that the school needs to build on. Not just for football but for hoops as well. Funny thing, we've recruited Texas and Cali well for baseball and track. I think if Graham doesn't get it done this year, our AD will bring in his guy and it'll be a young, dynamic guy.

Quick Hit on Oregon Ducks

New coach brought in off last year's 4-8 record. The offense was decent (15th) but the defense (126th) was AWFUL giving up over 500 yards per game and 41 points per game. The good news is eight starters are back on the offensive side of the ball plus two new co-offensive coordinators. Mario Cristobal (Alabama) and Marcus Arroyo (Oklahoma St.) will be in charge of what should be a pretty good offense. The bad news is there are ten starters returning of defense. New head man Willie Taggard better leave the offense to Arroyo and Cristobal and give his full attention to finding some new players to play defense or he will be feeling the Oregon nations heat quickly.

USA Today's Dan Wolken speaks out on Georgia....

Well, one damn thing for sure is that he's not impressed with Dawg coach Kirby Smart...at least not his first season. Wolken says that if Smart doesn't win the SEC East this year, he's a "Clown". "They are so far above the rest of the division in terms of talent right now with the players they've got coming back", that Smart has "Zero" excuses if he doesn't win the East Division. Wolken was also critical of other East teams calling Tennessee "a Joke" and saying Florida is "not really that good right now".

My take is Smart is learning to be a head coach. Watching him on the sidelines last season showed he has a lot to learn. He acted more like a coordinator bouncing around than a head coach. If Georgia doesn't make it to the SEC championship game this year you are going to hear a lot of negative stuff about Smart.

I have picked Florida to win the SEC East the past two years and will pick them again this season. The Gator D is going to be good again. The offense has to get better....doesn't it?

I used to wonder why people would post here and vanish during the season. I get it now, so many people trying to gain attention. It almost makes me miss the off season to see any real substance. I guess it's really speculation... Either way, an actual back and forth without someone standing their ground just because they bet it and coming up with reasons to support it.

I'm probably younger than most in here, but would still grab a beer with anyone. I don't have a top 4. I just appreciate the insight everyone gives here the last 3 years have been a blur and I haven't been able to stay up on what's going on. Luckily there are enough threads on here updated by most of you to keep me informed without going through the b.s. on ESPN. And for that, I'd buy everyone some rounds.

[h=1]What 'real' spring practice feels like at UAB, and the one thing that's missing[/h]


UAB has opened spring ball for real this year. After years of rebuilding the program and practicing for the sake of practicing, there are finally games to look forward this fall.


A year ago, they only had 67 players for spring. Now they’re up to the maximum 115. Every coach likes to say the depth chart is wide open in the spring, no matter the returning starters. For Clark, it’s literal.


“It’s real now,” he said of spring. “This is not make-believe or getting ready. It’s real now.”


But signs of the rebuild are still evident. The Blazers only have one field to practice on, compared to two or three everywhere else. There is construction as new facilities get built. It's a new turf field, and it's better condition than what UAB used to have.


"It's a challenge to put 115 guys out on one practice field and really get things done," Clark said. "I’ve always been big on 1s and 2s on one, 3s and 4s on another, pass rush, skeleton. That's tough, but we'll survive it. Lines are on the field and I'm not worried about mud holes, so we're definitely appreciative."


While it’s all tighter, Clark isn’t pulling anything back. They just have to be efficient. And again, just being on the field is not something people thought about when the program was canceled in December 2014.


"I haven’t cut out anything,” he said. “It's not as good as it's going to be. I'm not going to whine or complain about it, but we'll be glad to get our second and third field, I can promise you that."


UAB’s spring game is scheduled for April 1. Come September, they open against Alabama A&M, in what will surely be a special environment. But for now, it’s more work.


“There’s a total different sense of focus, coaches and players. They know we’re not practicing for the sake of practice,” Clark said. “How they handled that before was great, but now it’s a whole different day. That countdown clock is going every day.”

I saw thid the other day. He is an idiot. Kirby has never been a head coach.....so yes he has to learn.....shouldnt that be self explanatory? Florida will be solid due to the fact Muschamp left that D talent stacked. I am not very big on Jimmy Teeth, but he scrounged together a decent recruiting class last minute this year.

Two keys to the answer.....can UGA put an Oline together this year good enough to be presentable. They are very young b/c CMR refused to recruit talent at that position. The next key is will UF be able to score enough this year. Thats Jimmy Teeth talent, so his clock is ticking.

UGA is running away with talent in the East. They will compete and it will come down to them and UF in the east. UGA has a super easy secw cross over this year. I have said that Kirbys 3rd year will be his tell/tell. If he wins the east in his 2nd year icing.

Not a homer but....if Pittman can get solid play out of his young road graders, UGA has more than a fighters chance to win the SEC. It wouldnt suprise me one bit. The pieces are falling in place.

Ok Clover, here goes. The list could be lengthy but these are my top (four) and why (In no particular order):

1. Conan: He knows more about Pac-12 football in his little finger than most of us Southerners/Easterner know in our whole body and I love his Avatars.

2. Roll Tide: He is the stat-man (nuts & bolts) person here in the Rx and he doesn't mix words when it comes to Alabama (SEC) football and who knows more about the dark-side of recruiting than him. He'll even throw-in a morsel or two about the Pitt Panthers when appropriate...."4 national Championship in the past (8) years.....enough said".

3. Go Sooners: I have a soft spot in my heart or the old Southwest conference and the Glory days of Bud Wilkinson and Billy Vessels at Oklahoma. I know Ol GoSooners could tell a story or two.

4. Drum roll please: How can you not want to drink (coffee) with Clover, the true arbiter (peace-maker) here in the Rx football forum...Especially during the height of the season when tempers might flare a bit after a backdoor lose or two.

Honorable Mention: JBLonghorn: I know he has a big stable of women with him in Austin on game day and he might introduce one or two of them to me.
