Before I read these posts I would have said Ted Williams by a mile but afterreading about the accomplishments of Orr maybe he up there with "The Spendid Splinter". From 1941 to 1957 he led the league in Slugging Pct. every year he was eligible except for when Mantle won the triple crown.
When I was 9 or 10 in his 2nd season back from Korea I think it was 1955 he didn't play for the 1st 50 games or so. Ist games back he went 8 for 9 in a double header and was my favorite player from that time on.

The greatest double play combo in baseball history also ought to be mentioned. In 1948 Bobby Doerr & Junior Stephens combined for 56 HR &
248 RBI, and they topped that in 49 by hitting 57 HR & 268 RBI. Finally in 1950 they combined for 57 HR & 264 RBI. These numbers can't be matched.

Orr

I had his pinball machine in the basement as a kid. Ironically he was a portrayed as a Blackhawk.

Dennis Hextall, a former Minnesota North Star tough guy who played against Orr was ask while they both were still playing, "Who would win a fight between you and Bobby Orr?"
Hextall was embarrassed in his answer, "I can't catch Bobby Orr."

Btw,

I have totally disgraced myself, from top 10 I left off both Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler both from Brockton, MA.

I humbly request forgiveness.

Glad someone else mentioned these two--with all due respect to Bird, Orr, Teddy Ballgame, et. al. when someone mentions Boston sports these are the first two men that come to mind...

Oh, and don't forget John Ruiz....

That's the entry on it from the Internet Pinball Database....of course since the entire pinball industry was based in Chicago at the time they were understandably excited about Bobby Orr coming to town....

Obvious greats: #9,#4,#33,#6,#8

Deserving of mention: Bourque,Cousy,Marciano, Hannah and several others.

My personal favorite: #17, the Bouncin' Buckeye, guy personified hustle.

Best Jockey: Chris McCarron, who started at old Sufferin' Downs but went on to make his fortunes elsewhere.

Interesting thread, hard to argue with most of the selections already submitted, can only comment on those I actually saw and Williams was in his last year when I attended Fenway.
