If consistency means anything I would have to name Dan Harrington as the best currently.

Adding four to make the best five: Daniel Negreanu, Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, and Johnny Chan. All five are great, and I couldn't disagree with any of them as #1.

Phil Hellmuth is the best. He's won 9 bracelets. He's annoying as hell. But over his "career" he typically doesn't leave a tourney unless he takes a bad beat. He makes impressive lay downs as well and doesn't get eliminated when others would. Finally, he commands such a respect and has such a reputation, he knows how to use it to make others fold superior hands.

Dan Harrington also does this very well and he would have to get a serious nod as one of the best. The fields just keep getting larger and larger at the WSOP and somehow this guy keeps ending up at the final table. Not a coincedence.

Gus Hansen and Daniel Negreanu like to play a lot of inferior hands and outplay their opponent. Sometimes it gets them in trouble, and sometimes the aggressive play gets them 1st place.

A lot of superstars out there in poker. Impressive how the game has grown.

Whoever gets the cards.....No Hold em is more luck than anything...

So the best player is who gets the cards in my opinion....

Yes you have to put yourself into position but anyone can win...

Look at Moneymaker he really is not that good but he got the cards so he was "the best" at that tournament....

It is to arbitrary to say who is the best in hold em

Tuan Le has the hot hand right now. Harrington has accomplished the most impressive feat. Hanson has the second most impressive. The Grinder is currently on a nice roll. Hellmuth's Heads up win is gonna be on NBC and will certainly give his book, dvd etc a shot in the arm.

By the way I strongly agree with the earlier post about Hellmuth's laydowns. Making good laydowns is becoming a lost art. Thanks in part to the ridiculous comments about "being outplayed" whenever a guy lays down a big hand. You will start to see guys who can lay hands down be the long term winners. Remember we are dealing with a small sample size right now. It will take at least five years to determine a true top ten.

It depends on the level of the game/stakes. If you are playing with friends for a $10 buy-in then the person who catches the best cards will probably win because people will not be bluffed out of too many pots or won't be afraid of calling with marginal hands...after all they are only going to lose a few bucks. On the pro level, I couldn't disagree with you more. Pros (such as Gus Hansen) can have 7-2 offsuit and be up against someone with a better than average hand and still win the pot...how? He raises before the flop, bets after the flop, turn ...maybe even moves in on the river to force you to make a decision for your whole stack.(serious $$$) IMO...the skill of reading opponents, timing your moves (or just having the balls to make moves) are all part of the game. Moneymaker had some good cards, but (in that tournament) he knew when to get away from hands and he made some ballsy bluffs and semi-bluffs!!! It amazes me how many people say "it is all luck of the cards"...if that were the case why do all of these pros exist? The key is making your opponent believe you have him beat or forcing him out of the hand and not having to show him your cards (ie you win without having the best cards all the time) *DISCLAIMER* I am not claiming to be an authority on poker...just my humble opinion.

Hansen is the most impressive for me to watch. He can outplay people after the flop which allows him to play any two cards.

Harrington gets a vote for reasons already mentioned.

Hellmuth is awesome. He has a natural gift when it somes to reading people.
