"It might be.... it could be...it is!! Homerun Sammy Soso!!!"

Actually Harry Cary was great as the Cardinals announcer way before the Cubs days. Used to listen to him as a kid on KMOX. Wasn't his sidekick back then Jack Buck?

On tv used to really enjoy Dizzy Dean (and Phil Rizzuto?).

Wow VVV, you go back a ways. Do you think play-by-play announcers should "root" for the home team (ie; Hawk Harrelson of the White Sox)?

If were talking about announcers for pure entertainment only it's certainly hard not to mention Harry. If your talking about all around greats harry does'nt hit the board. Lets be honest Harry knew very little about what was going on on the field. Unless you were interested in anything but baseball he was very entertaining. Mispronounced names incorrect imformation and drunken slurs was vintage Harry.
If your talking about baseball knowledge and a unique solid job calling a game Ernie, Vin, and buck are far and away the best

Dicky: you're dead-on about Harry, that's exactly what I said, 'entertainment-wise' - the pure joy of listening to Harry get juiced from time to time and trying to make sense of the action was beyond compare. I miss the hell out of Harry, more than I will ever miss (eventually) all of the other announcers combined - he gave me a reason to watch when there was not much quality on the field, and he never bored me with stats.

Here's one for you, Harry, RIP

Hey Jazz. I am sure some of our posters would be interested to know how to place an image as part of a post. Could you give us a lesson?

I remember watching a game one time and the camera man showed a guy in the first row behind the dugout Harry yells "Hey thats Stanley Banks" Harry repeated it about three times like the NATIONAL audience was going to know who Stanley Banks was.
Turns out Stanley used to be a harness driver on the Chicago racing circuit. I was about the .001% people outside the Chicago area who knew who the fvck Stanley Banks was. That was classic Harry.

Not that far back, just loved sports as a kid! As to whether announcers should be homers, I would say yes but in a reserved fashion. Hawk is annoying to me (with the exception of times when I have a wager on the Sox!).

Most people seem to remember Harry more post-stroke rather than before. Earlier in his career he seemed more focused on the game, less on the booze and babes. I liked both Harrys!!

Charlie, I'd be glad to, but don't have the time tonight - I posted exactly what you're referring to last week or the week before, so maybe I can find that later.

Dicky and VV: Dicky, that WAS classic Harry - he defined exuberance, he loved what he was doing and it always showed. VV, Harry was doing that kind of thing long before his stroke - I was really referring to those times, most of them back in the 70's and 80's.
