I think it is a bit of a shame that Mora Jr. isn't a possiblity -- I think his attitude and energy would be perfect for the college level.

One other name that may surface is Scott Linehan -- he has Washignton roots and formerly coached at Washington. He does have a bit of a stigma attached right now, given the circumstances in St. Louis.

I don't think Linehan would be a very inspirational choice. I think it would behoove the huskies to get over trying to hire a guy who has roots to the program. Personally, I think that they should offer the job with defensive roots, fans are much more inspired by a tough defense aka purple riegn

I hope they take Brent Venerables, the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma. Please.

I think Muschamp is waiting to go to the SEC somewhere (Auburn?)

Pinkel, despite Missouri's recent success, is still not a very good coach IMO.

Here is who I would be after if I were Washington: Gary Patterson (TCU) or Chris Petersen (Boise).

this is absolutely key otherwise you end up running through deadbeats like Mike Dubose and Mike Shula until you decide to just hire the best man for the job (having $4M lying around doesn't hurt either)

conan,

I didn't hear the story about Price leaving Washington, would be interested to hear more...I agree that Kiffin wouldn't be great, just what I had heard...I think Malzon sp? would be a good fit for a Pac 10 school...

I think they should try to steal Pat Hill away from Fresno St. But I doubt he would even want to come to Washington.

Why would a "top coaching candidate" want to go to UW?

UW is AT BEST a middle of the road program in the PAC-10 (or Strong-1 Weak-9)

THey have a good QB.....but how can you recruit there?

Have you have ever been to the UW campus, absolutely beautiful. The stadium has the most amazing setting in football.

UW dominated the PAC 10 in the 90's. Also, don't forget they finished in the top 4, granted it was several years back 2000, but they have always pulled talent from SoCal.

UW is not a difficult sell, its just a matter of getting the right coach.

Pags, I hope WinOne sees this thread. I bet he could shed some light on this. I am very curious to know myself about what came down. I think there's some juicy stuff in there.

My oh my how the Cougars have fallen from grace since he left the program!
(But it did take him 10 years to build it up his own way.)

I think Hill would indeed be interested. He was actively pursuing the Oregon St. job prior to Riley. He desperately wants to be in the Pac 10. I also think he would be a very good fit for UW. Surprised that I don't see him listed as a potential candidate more often.

As for Chris Peterson, the huskies should also make a strong play for him. But I have doubts about how interested he would be. He is well paid, loved and I think he really desires the Oregon program. While I think Chip Kelly is on deck there for now I think he could be persuaded to leave if the right program opened up on the east coast. I don't think he is adjusting as well as people think to the Northwest laid back atmosphere. Peterson knows this and I think he wouldn't want to ruin his shot.

Here's the latest list as of 11/4/08...

The University of Washington’s head coaching search is already underway, and the usual list of candidates is circling the Internet faster than it takes ACORN to re-register a voter. UW President Mark Emmert and AD Scott Woodward have quite a task on their hands.

The right guy brings Husky football back to its winning roots in three years, while the wrong guy sets them back yet again after the failures of Gilbertson and Willingham.

Therefore, the creation of another list, with the top 10 in no particular order other than the numbers by their names.

1. Jim Mora Jr.—Assistant Head Coach, Seattle Seahawks

Right now, he's thinking either way he's screwed with a bad team. If by some miracle he takes the job, the residents of Montlake will be so elated they’d sit through a Gilmore Girls marathon without giving a crap.

No other name would bring such excitement. No other pick would more instantly restore faith in the football program. No other pick would be better. The waiting list for season tickets would be longer than a list of bad Backstreet Boys songs.

2. Mike Leach—Head Coach, Texas Tech

It must be more than just message board chatter when Brent Musburger mentions it on the nationally televised prime time Texas-Texas Tech showdown.

Any legitimate shot may have gone out the window when Crabtree walked across the goal line Saturday night, but a couple of different sources are reporting that he's unhappy with his contract and is interested in the job. Plus with Lake Washington nearby, he'd have a perfect place to dock a pirate ship.

3. Lane Kiffin—Former Head Coach, Oakland Raiders

He's the former offensive coordinator at USC and only 33. Essentially this is the highest risk/reward pick. If he’s the guy, Emmert and Woodward will either be freakin' geniuses or blooming idiots in five years.

The Oakland job shouldn’t be held against him where Po the Panda could do a better job than Al Davis. Anyone not sold due to his less than stellar pro coaching record, see Carroll, Pete and Saban, Nick. Strong West Coast ties should help him with his chances, and since he is out of work, he’d instantly take the job and could start recruiting now.

4. Will Muschamp—Defensive Coordinator, Texas

The defensive mastermind for Texas, Auburn, and LSU. He was defensive coordinator for LSU when they won the national title while Emmert and Woodward were there. A hard-nosed, get-in-your-face type of guy whose intensity and demeanor are the opposite of Willingham, which might exactly be what the Huskies are looking for.

5. Gary Pinkel—Head Coach, Missouri

The Dawgs have a better chance at getting Gil Dobie. Why would Pinkel leave a consistently top 25 team which he’s built up where he has all the money and facilities he’d ever need? But with Chase Daniel leaving, it might be tempting to return home to Seattle with a chance to coach Jake Locker for two years.

6. Dave Christensen—Offensive Coordinator, Missouri

The offensive genius behind Missouri’s explosive offense and a former Husky in the early '80s while under the Dawgfather. He’s third in line with Husky ties but probably the most likely to get the job after Mora and Pinkel decline the offer. He’s more than just a long shot if the Huskies want to bring someone home that bleeds purple and gold.

7. Chris Petersen—Head Coach, Boise St.

Would he leave a guaranteed conference title every year where he is considered a near deity? With UW, he gets more money, more national exposure, more tyee donors, better facilities, and a major conference coaching gig. Question is, does he leave now or later for one with less rebuilding to do? It’s when, not if.

8. Brian Kelly—Head Coach, Cincinnati

A proven winner no matter where he’s been (Grand Valley St., Central Michigan, Cincinnati), a hefty pay raise and BCS conference job would be too hard to pass up. Like Petersen, does he take this job or wait for another opportunity?

9. Steve Sarkisian—Offensive Coordinator, USC

Another young (34) USC coach that is reportedly interested in the job. With strong West Coast ties as a plus, he would more than likely jump for a head coaching gig, especially at a high prominence Pac-10 school like Washington.

10. Pat Hill—Head Coach, Fresno St.

Many Husky faithful are unsold on the head man at Fresno St., who has had mediocre seasons as of late. He was more than willing to jump a few years ago, and if the previous nine decline, he’d jump on faster than a Usain Bolt chest thump.

Kiffin or Peterson probably are the most realistic options at this point...

The rebuilding part is the most daunting part of the task.
It could be so bad that it scares away some of them.

I also think Petersen is an intriguing possibility. But as it will turn out, whoever Boise St. hires to replace Peterson would have been just as good a choice for UW. Boise's Athletic Department has some very high caliber people that run the place. UW may also need a changing of the guard in their athletic department. They've gotten a lot of people in Seattle very upset. Replacing Willingham won't be the end of it. Big heads could roll.

This topic should be titled "who are the coaches in question to take over" , because Washington is going to HAVE TO BEG Any of these kind of names to take over!
Like the last poster said, Why would any one who wants to Actually GAIN respect towards the future? Want to decimate themselves by taking over at this SHIT SCHOOL! Shit City/State, And when the top prospects in NcaaF are Not going to deal with facing USC, Oregon, Etc,

Weather can drive you insane!

And these Kids also wont want to remove themselves from NFL chatter because theyre stuck in a shit program (From Athl Dept All the way down) that totally needs revamping and theyll never get the accolades theyll need to get recognized

I got dibbs NONE of these names will wreck what theyve done so far, to make it worse by taking over this team!

Willingham is clueless! HAS BEEN clueless for years, and now someone else has to try and FIX what he Fucked up?

Good luck with that lol

Why don't you just tell us how you really feel!
Think again. It's not so bad for you or for me.
Having UW and WSU to fade is money in your pocket.
As a WC gambler, I couldn't have asked for anything better.
It looks like this cash cow might be extended another year.

I think UW should hire Bill Gates since he lives around the Washington area. He could immediately upgrade all the facilities and make them the best in the country. He could pay off whoever he wants, including the refs. He could pay for all the recruits that Southern Cal usually gets. He could also buy Long Beach Poly School since they usually produce alot of Pac-10 talent.
