1983 World Series MVP Rick Dempsey

Dempsey was some character, I have read some funny stories about Dempsey in Cal Ripken`s book...Those Orioles teams were a fun bunch of good old Baltimore Orioles, back when they`re was pride in the organization...

Dempsey is the 1st base coach these days...

And Dempsey was also notorious for his rain
delay antics...He`d come out in a rain delay and give his rendition of Babe Ruth`s called shot....Ending up sliding into home plate on the wet tarp, he`d slip slide down the third base line head first! the Demper

yeah, i knew that you would get it... he was actually born in petersburg tn,, my cousing played a little ball with rick, when they were young,, he was a couple years younger than rick, he said rick would bully them around a little.. but he liked him alright.. rick then moved away, but his baseball card still records fayetteville tn, as his birthdate..

Jman, do you remember Stanhouse, what did weaver call him?? 2 pak, or something like that..... also i think the only bet that my dad ever made was on the Orioles in 1979 series,, he took the O's and the pirates beat them,, i loved that "we are family team".. Omar Moreno, Tim Foli, Dave Parker, Willie Stargell, Bill Madlock, Bill Robinson, Ed Ott, Phil Garner, -- do those names make you cry Jman..

Another funny thing about Dempsey, who was strictly known for his great handling of pitchers and his defense...In I think 1985 maybe Dempsey came back all bulked up from offseason training , I remember being there on Opening Day when they called him out in the opening day ceremonies , LOL , Dempsey comes out and does a flexing/posing routine, showing off his new physique, it was hilarious, and he was bulked!

He tried a briefly switch hitting , but it never worked out, he was a true gamer! Famous for climbing the backstop screen going after foul balls! good memories......

didnt he put on a goofy routine during a rain delay, ran around and slid into the bases with a big pillow under his shirt, or something like that..

yes , i was at game 6 and 7...I still have a 1979 World Series ball to this day....yes it was an awful ending to a magical season..1979 in Baltimore was very special, anyone that lived here would agree....

Game 6 was a lousy game I think it ended like 2-1 < I remember a Dauer homerun and then pittsburgh came back, I think we lost 2-1....I did get Lee May`s bat at that game....i remember Palmer started the game , and they were playing "Don`t mess around with Jim" before the game...LOL

Game 7 Pittsburgh was leading it was like the 7th or 8th inning the game was on the line tie runners on and none other than then Mr Clutch Eddie Murray ay the plate, the place was going crazy chanting ED DIE ED DIE, well 79 season was full of these magic comebacks so it seemed as if the stage was set again, Murray crushes one to right field , a frozen rope that he just didnt get under enough, sending Parker back back back, CAUGHT! He just missed hitting one of the most memorable homers in WS History! I was depressed for days!

hmm, well I would never say i was a body builder, i never had the discipline to eat right, nor did i want to take any kind of risky drugs or supplements..I did take creatine for one cycle about 4 years ago, and it actually did work, but my hands started getting numb all the time so I stopped taking it...I am pretty much just a weight lifter these days, I don`t bench heavy anymore , a shoulder injury has made that too risky...One time after my injury I had about 300 lbs on the bar and my shoulder went out, very painful and scary...At my peak i could do around 400, 405 officially, but I never really got into the bodybuilding side of it, I was a soccer player so i didn`t have a problem staying somewhat lean and cut...At 35 now, I`m still about the same as i`ve always been , I just don`t bench heavy....I had some unusual training habits back in the day, lol, I would actually Bench Press everyday! I know it was against all the rules but it worked for me, I would start each workout by benching 10 sets of 5 reps, with as heavy a weight as i could, then i would add 1/2 lbs each workout, this worked for me as i went from working out with 225x5 (weighing 185) in 1989 to 375x5 in 1999 (weighing 205), and I never really felt the weight get heavier just adding 1/2 lb. I use to watch the Rocky movies for motivation! the EYE OF THE TIGER! And yes I have seen Pumping Iron another good motivational movie...

I wouldnt add 1/2 lb every day, I would add it when I felt I could get 5 reps, I use to bench at home without a spotter too...So if I couldnt get 5 I`d wait til I could...Many times I`d be struggling in a deadlock with the weight halfway between going up and coming down on me,lol, most of the time it did make it back up on the bench...But i have had it come downon me too, thats not fun!
