The WHO has finally launched its long-awaited platform against obesity in the world (a crippling problem in such places as Rwanda, Myanmar and Ehtiopia don't you know; truly a global problem requiring a global agency's focus.)

Press release here.

Particularly telling:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) believe Washington is bowing to pressure from its powerful food industry to soften the plan, weaken its call to governments to use weapons such as taxation and advertising restrictions to change eating habits, and leave everything up to individual choice.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

(emphasis added)

Yes, those pesky Americans, always wanting choices. Damn them!

And a really bad pun:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>
[HHS Secretary]Thompson acknowledged that the United States itself faced a huge problem ...

I can hardly wait to see in a few years where domestic lawsuits against fast food chains by fat bastards, global agencies railing against very much regional and even local health problems, and other such fun trends will lead.

It WILL be interesting to see where the high fat fast food issue goes in the coming years.

In the 1940's anyone that ranted on about smoking was a moronic lunatic.
Every second movie had people lighting up as a huge percentage of the population sat there watching and puffed away.
Then the health issues started and bodies began to pile up in ever increasing numbers.
Early lawsuits were thrown out of court, etc etc.
Various radical product tweaks were attempted over the years but the original consumer base could not be weaned over to accept them in sufficient numbers.

Well, it's a UN agency, so I'm guessing it's not funded by bake sales or voluntary contributions ...
