pretty wild people mentioning dave stewart (career 4.00 ERA pitcher) and dennis eckersley (dominant closer, barely .500 starter) but nothing on Roger Clemens ... ??

silly

for 2-3 year guys Fernando and Gooden were as good as it gets but never sustained like Orel or Pedro or Maddux in same era

Silly ? Stewart beat the rocket 9 times. He had 4 20 win seasons in a row. Show me a pitcher that does that now. Yeah silly huh

Pedro my fave ever but if you needed to win one game and your life depended on it , I'd give the ball to Jack Morris.

Lots of great pitchers, but I am going back to 1930-31. Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia Athletics was a combined 59-9, and raised the A's past the Bronx Bombers of Ruth and Gehrig. And like you said, no wrong answers here. :toast:

We were told for 1-game and for guys in this era... I chose Eckersly just for his fast sidearm pitching and his release. Which would be more than enough to win 1 game vs players today, who have never seen anything like that.

Players today get hits off Brad Ziegler, Darren O'Day, Steve Cishek, Pat Neshek and any of the others who throw sidearm and submarine. And there's a reason all of them only pitch one inning at a time. . .

And that was when the entire league had a batting average of .296 and scored over 11 runs per game. It was like every single game was in Denver and he still had a 2.30 ERA and made 29 relief appearances those years in addition to starting as often as Kershaw or Arrieta

Gibson or Koufax. Jack Morris isn't in Gibson or Koufax's category as all time greats but his performance in game 7 of the 91 World Series is as good and clutch of a performance as there has ever been. 10 inning shutout in game 7 is as good as it gets.

I never saw him pitch but some of the old timers always say Juan Marichal was one of the toughest guys to face as a batter. Career 2303 strikeouts and pitched a 15 inning game against warren Spahn. That's right, the guy started and went 15 innings and gave up 0 runs.
