When sitting idle but you see your pointer turn to an hour glass

What does it mean? I was sitting here just looking at the screen, but my pointer was turning to an hour glass like it was loading something. Any ideas?

Someone please answer this for The General.

I think that I had this happen to me once--not sure. But I may have thought it had something to do with email or something else that was normal. It's a very rare thing.

does it happen often? or just that one time?

It probably means that the computer was in the final steps of closing or launching a program?
