Biggest dump, although it is supposedly being reconstructed is Guadalajara. That place is so bad that it was almost funny. It is like Denver, way out in the middle of nowhere, but you get off and feel like you landed in a cheap bus station. They almost personally hand you your luggage and buying a taxi ticket feels like you are at the Sunday market fighting off the pirate taxis. San Jose, Costa Rica gets honorable mention for this, the new terminal has made it a lot more pleasant, but it is a total eyesore anywhere when you step outside and have 20 hustlers hit you up to either direct you to the cab ticket booth 20 feet away or to carry your bags 50 feet to a waiting cab, expecting a buck or two for their worthless efforts.
Nice airports are few and far between. Location is always key and having an easy and cheap way to get into town without a rental car is a good bonus as well. Las Vegas, if they had the monorail running to McCarran would be a strong contender, but their 4 hour lines to clear security or check bags is plain ridiculous. I suppose if I really had to pick just one San Diego is probably the best as you can cab it into town for $6 or bus it in for $2. Great views too just after you get out of the airport. Still can be massively crowded if you are flying Southwest on Friday or Sunday, so hard to give it a 100% endorsement.
