Whats next for Iraq? Permanent bases?

While everyone is celebrating the handover (dont get too drunk patriot) I thought I might have a wee think about the real world.

Just remember, we are dealing with extremists in Washington.
Stay focussed now.

First there's the 'democratic' and propaganda element, where the 2nd class Iraqi citizens have to get the heck on with their lives, whatever happens, they're pretty much on their own.
They get to fight over the reconstruction crumbs, the small millions that prevent complete collapse.
Most of us muppets squabble over that bit.(me 2 btw)

Then there's the chickenhawk strategic element.
The bit that gets most of the cash.
The big bit.
Israel is too much of a PITA from a strategic angle, the US needs its own subsidiaries to project power, and it has a unique opportunity in Iraq.
An opportunity that is unlikely to be repeated, in a very important part of the world.

To "maintain security and stability in a vital area of the world" I reckon the US will establish permanent bases in Iraq, preferably on a Guantanamo long lease type basis.

The UN is not needed, it has already legitimised this fuxxing joke of an Iraqi administration.(Europe has too actually)

So the US just needs its suited arab stooges in their Baghdad bunker to sign off the paperwork as part of an 'Iraqi mutual stability agreement'.
The stooges will sign up, Iraq is too unstable, they know that they don't have much of a future without the American military anyway.
Small minded weak men, hungry to taste power, make big mistakes.

The western press probaly won't even make much of a fuss about it, apart from the really lefty parts.

(I wonder how much of this was discussed at the last Bildeberg k-k-k cocktail party a month ago.)
--------------------------------------

It gives the mission the perspective and credibility that it has lacked so far...

The WMD was bollox, everyone KNEW that.
The Saddam and Al-Q connection was so bollox it was an insult to human intelligence.
NATO is not needed.
The UN is not needed.
Europe is not needed.
It removes a lot of Arab pressure on Israel having say...3 big US military bases in Iraq.
It gives you direct access to the oil breadbasket of planet earth.
You have a permanent presence to police the towelheads, Iraq borders on pretty much everywhere that matters.
It means the mission has some genuine 'Payback' instead of the confusion that reigns at the moment.(The WTF are they doing? factor)

The whole thing has been a clusterfu*k so far, unless there is a final (unannounced) objective.

If it happens, it will happen in the period before the Iraqi 'elections', while the new puppet administration is still weak.
6 months?

One other thing, if it happens, GWB needs to be re-elected to ensure completion.

America, the world is watching.

Your right, we really need another USSR with loads of nuclear kit pointing at America to keep the peace.

This UN and diplomacy stuff is a joke.
Only armageddon cuts any ice.

The Iranians and N Koreans know that.

What I find really interesting is: we went in there to free Iraq from a brutal dictator, now we have a brutal, puppet government.

What did the defense minister say? "we will cut off the hands and heads of anyone who is not with us."

Actually quite a good post, this.

Massmailwaukee

This is similar to what we did back in '53 with the Shah in Iran, just a lot bloodier. In a lot of ways it makes sense -- certainly a lot more than the "Warren Terrism" and "war for oil" nonsense coming from the right and left respecitively.

Eek: could not agree more. Too bad Bush's flock will just denounce your take on the real agenda as left-wing, anti-American, terrorist-loving poli-babble.

Fades,

Iran was a bit before my time, only things I know, I read. What do you think about arming each side with an arsenal like that from their favorite action flick, I would choose Predator, fencing it in so there can be no foreign influence, place a flag in the south, in the west, and in the North, and whichever side gets all three flags can decide the fate of Iraq.

Just a hypothesis for the ungovernable.

We pretty much already tried that with Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan in the 80's. Didn't work out very well.

Phaedrus,

When I have an hour to burn, I enjoy reading your posts. I am curious however. Do you run with scissors?

I don't get the question. Literally, no, I do not run with scissors. However, I somehow doubt that you meant the question literally.

The question isn't literal, just a bit curious how wreckless you can be. I can imagine in your youth you stepped out of line, maybe returned the beta's without rewinding them... something makes me think there is a reason you became libertarian.

I'm not a libertarian; I think that they are the saddest jokes of all political animals.

I've been reckless pretty much all of my life though, if that's the term you want to use. I've gotten in loads of trouble, made (and lost and made and lost and made) loads of money, had loads of wives. I like exciting and ostensibly dangerous stuff like skydiving and rock-climbing.

I'm not so old that I look back on my youth as another time btw ... only thirty-two.

What a weird turn this thread has taken.

Everybody postyour turn-ons.
