1972....My jr high school had its annual fundraising game. The jr high coaches played the high school coaches. I dont think the jr's had ever won. This year would be different though. Our newest coach was fresh out of Southern U. with a few NBA tryouts 1st. Guy could shoot like Bird. We couldnt wait for the game cus he was going to lite them up for sure.
The day of the game Coach comes in and we can tell somethings wrong. "Guys i cant play tonight, im in the National Guard and they have called a meeting tonight that i cant miss". We were blown away. This was gonna be the biggest night ever and now its done. The HS will smoke us again and that will be that.
We go to the game that night and its just what we thought. It was like 35-10 at the half and everyone was ready to leave.
All of a sudden the crowd started standing.....something was happening. Our coach came thru the door, full Guard uniform on and carrying a duffel bag...he went to the locker room and NOBODY LEFT!!!
When the 2nd half started it was a show that will never be duplicated...He shot from everywhere on the court and i dont think he missed any....And when he wasnt draining rainmakers he was on the other end making steals and blocks. You would have thought the national championship was being played in that gym. Everybody was standing and he just kept them coming....We won the game by a lot. The other team was in such awe they enjoyed watching him as much as we did...
unfortunately i have been unable to find a pic of Coach. But if your ever in Baton Rouge stop by Glen Oaks HS and ask to see Harvey Adger....He moved to the high school later on and has been head coach there since. Won the state championship a few years ago, going 36-0 with USC signee Ryan Francis who was murdered here in a driveby and never got to display his skills....
I only spent that 1 yr with Coach but those memories will never die.....and that was the greatest sporting event i ever attended.
