One of the best golf betting weeks of the year has arrived with the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, March 22-26.

It is a designated event with a $20 million purse and the 64-player field includes virtually all of the top PGA Tour players.
Since it is match play and bracket style once the field is reduced to 16 players, there are more betting options than a typical tournament.

The 64 players have been placed into 16 groups of four players (based on world ranking) and play a round-robin format over the first three days. The winners from each pod make it to the Round of 16 and then play bracket style until a winner is determined.
The Round of 16 will be played Saturday morning, with the winners playing in the afternoon. Sunday morning will feature the semi-finals and the afternoon will have the championship match along with the third-place match.

2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Past Winners and Winners Stats​

2022: Scottie Scheffler (d. Kevin Kisner in finals)

• Lead-in: win/7/win (had twice on the year prior to winning the Match Play)
• Scheffler was on a tear heading into this event in 2022, having already won twice in the calendar year
• Scheffler also had built up some good experience having reached the finals of this event the season prior
• From a fit perspective, the 2020 Masters champion has also grabbed a win at TPC Sawgrass — another Pete Dye venue

2021: Billy Horschel (d. Scottie Scheffler in finals)

• Lead in: 58/MC/2 (had recorded two top-10 finishes since the start of the year – including runner-up at WGC Mexico)
• Horschel has a 13-7-2 lifetime record in match play singles
• Like many of the past winners of this event, Horschel had built up some solid finishes already on the year, landing a runner-up three starts prior in Mexico

2019 (no event in 2020): Kevin Kisner (d. Matt Kuchar in finals)

• Lead-in: 24/22/23, (had made nine cuts in a row heading into the event)
• Kisner was the only one of the past five winners not to have recorded a top-5 finish in the year prior to winning
• He had shown remarkably steady form and had also gained a ton of experience the year prior when he made the finals of this event and lost to Bubba Watson

Max Homa to Win (+2000)​

Homa is coming off one of the quietest T6 performances you’ll ever see at THE PLAYERS Championship two weeks ago. He gained 4.6 strokes on approach and 7.6 strokes from tee-to-green over his four rounds. The T6 also marked the fourth time over his past five events where Homa’s finished inside the top-six, with three of those inside the top-three. He’s really got every facet of his game working right now, as he ranks No. 1 in this field in SG: Approach, fourth in SG: Putting and third in SG: Total over his past 24 rounds.


In his two career starts at the WGC Match Play, Homa has failed to make the round of 16. However, he’s clearly a far superior player now than he’s ever been before and is a massive threat to take down this event. Another reason to like Homa this week is due to the group he’s been placed in. He will be paired with Hideki Matsuyama, Kevin Kisner and rookie Justin Suh. Kisner has insane history at this event, but has been playing terrible of late, while Matsyuama has been battling a neck issue for months and has been very up and down of late.


If Homa wins his group, a date with Jordan Spieth likely awaits in the round of 16. Spieth has never really had a ton of success at Austin Country Club either, so I will take my chances there as well. Homa is firing on all cylinders right now and has the stone cold demeanor necessary to win an event like this, as he’s seemingly never rattled by anything.

Alex Noren to Win (+11000)​

The most difficult part about Noren winning this week is going to be simply getting out of his group, as he has world No. 1 and defending champion Scottie Scheffler to deal with. This, however, is also part of the reason we are getting such a juicy number on DraftKings Sportsbook at 110/1. Noren has been no slouch himself at this event in the past, posting a pair of top-six finishes, while finishing no worse than 18th in his other two starts.


His career record at Austin Country Club is 11-5 and his 68.8% winning percentage is the third best in the field behind only Kevin Kisner and the aforementioned Scheffler. Noren has had a bit of a rough go of it of late, missing three of his past four cuts, but prior to that had posted a pair of top-fives at the Houston Open and on the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship (DP World Tour).


Despite his recent struggles with his ball-striking, Noren’s putting has remained strong, ranking 14th in the field in SG: Putting across his past 48 rounds. He also has positive splits on Bermuda greens.


There is something different about simply taking on one person head-to-head instead of a full field of 156, and Noren has shown to thrive in these situations over the years. If he could somehow beat Goliath (Scheffler) and make it out of his group, he absolutely has to be taken seriously as a threat to win this.

The final WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Sweet 16 has been set, and one champion will emerge after four rounds of golf on Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26 at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.


After three days of round-robin group play, the top 16 players have emerged and will face off in a bracket just like the one used by March Madness: The Group No. 1 winner (Scottie Scheffler) will face the Group No. 16 winner (J.T. Poston), the Group No. 2 winner (Billy Horschel) draws the Group No. 15 winner (Cameron Young), and so on.


All 16 golfers will tee off Saturday morning, with the winning eight going back out on the course for the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday the remaining four winners will play 36 holes again, with the semifinals in the morning, and a championship match and a third-place match in the afternoon.

I'm holding a future on Scottie at +1100 that I got on Draftkings with an odds boost. I still feel comfortable with it and am going to ride it out one more round. Burns is a great putter, which scares me a little bit. Scottie still hasn't found the peak of his game yet, but I'm hoping EVERYTHING comes to form this morning. Let's go Scottie!!!!!
