This stuff is crazy. We don't really think about this very often, because we just plan on living until we die of natural causes. Accidents happen, but it won't happen to me. Yet, I've narrowly escaped death at least once and probably many times. Last summer I was waiting at a stoplight to go straight, and an oncoming vehicle was turning left and had to yield. The driver gunned it and I stopped, and one second later a car flew through a red light from my left. I was pretty stunned, it took me about 5 seconds to process what had happened. I have also seen numerous cars run through red lights, which probably would have killed someone if a car had been in their way. Yet, even today, I don't think about these things much. I once heard Charles Barkley say he never worries about things he can't control. I guess that's good advice.

"Control the controllable". Forget where I read that, but it's always stuck with me.

I've almost died many times. Cars, cocaine a couple times, motorcycles (used to race motocross)

The one that sticks out is a friend of mine and me were driving home from a club on a Friday night. 4 other friends were in a car in front of us. I'm reluctant to give to many details of the car I was driving, but it was a fast car. I would drive 145 mph quite a bit in it. Anyway, this car cuts my friends off so I pull up beside the car to talk shit. My friend throws out his beer bottle and nails the windshield. This pisses them off obviously and they start chasing us. I was doing 120 weaving in and out of traffic and this car was a foot off my ass the while time. It was 2am so there wasn't that much traffic. After about 4 miles I go from the far left lane to the far right and take the exit at 110. Well, this car was on my ass and at the last second decided not to take the exit. There was a curb that made a triangle around the exit. The car hit the curb at over a 100mph and just started flipping (rolling) and caught air over and over. I was watching it happen to my left and it seemed like it was in slow motion. My friends that were behind us stopped at the scene because the car was destroyed and they thought we were involved. The police came and they had the whole hwy shut down. The passenger was ok and giving the police a description of my car. He was very drunk and saying that we clipped them. The driver was a girl and she died. The drivers side window was flattened my friends said. I didn't clip them because I would have obviously been in the crash as well. It was in the paper the next day as a single car accident. I stopped driving like an idiot after that.

When I was 8 years old I was trying to get a knot out of my football pants with an ice pick while I was wearing them. The ice pick slipped off the knot and I stabbed myself between the eyes. One in a million shot. My mom was on the phone at the time and freaked the hell out when she saw what I had did. Got yelled at pretty good. Could have lost an eye easy.

I ran a red light once doing 50 and broadsided a truck. I never hit the breaks because I wasn't paying attention. I turned the truck over on its top and did a 720 and nailed the guardrail backwards on a bridge knocking out the driver side window with my head. I wasn't wearing a seat belt and walked away with minor bruises and glass stuck in my head and hand. Those people ended up suing my insurance company and got over 80k.

Forgot about this one until now...

i was in the Marine Corps and worked on F/A 18's. I was an ejection seat mechanic and also worked with the cockpit pressurization and a few other things. Anyway there was a test that required me to be on top of the plane while it was running so the pilot and I could do a test. Well, I was about to step down the ladder and the pilot had the engines running at a high speed. At the last second he grabbed me and pulled me back. I would have been sucked through the engine had he not grabbed me. That was a real near death experience. Again, not paying attention.

Face planted going over a jump on a CR 250. Shattered my wrist in 30 pieces and broke my ankle. I hit so hard it bent the sub frame on the bike (hard to do). I required surgery on my wrist and had to wear this external shock thing with 4 pins in my wrist for 6 months. I didn't almost die, but probably the worst pain I've ever felt.

maybe it's the same thing. almost killed by a bacteria i guess, one other time from a gun, and another 6 or so from my condition. nothing by way of wild car crashes or anything like that.

I walked in a bar once in Grand Island, Nebraska. It was full of drunk Mexicans. That's the closest I came.

Prague. December, 1993.

Drunk and back packing. Some English dude grab me and pulled me back before I was about to cross some rail road tracks by the youth hostel.

I felt the wind on my cheeks as the train rolled by. must have been 1 foot in distance. No horn sounded or warning lights.

I remember that I was in the middle of a good booty story and was not even paying attention to my surrondings.

I would buy that man a beer if he was in front of me today.

Bourn...

So your friend threw a beer bottle at another moving vehicle hitting it's windshield with the bottle. That car pursued yours and the driver died in an accident when you exited at 100+ mph and the other driver didn't (she).

That is tough to swallow. That's a heavy burden for all involved. I don't know the letter of the law in a case like that, but morally - hmm. I would find it very difficult to sleep at night if I was your friend who threw the bottle. I don't know what he could do to make it right, but it appears that something is/was in order. Maybe she was someone's wife? A mother? A caretaker for a dependent? I hope he looked into it and has done the right thing... and... what is the right thing? I suppose whatever his heart says after he knows more about who she was.

I am sorry to come off as the moral judge and jury, but damn.. I hope your friend makes it right, or has made it right.

No way should the friend have thrown a bottle but that doesn't mean its his fault. The other driver made it their choice to pursue. Tragic situation but the other driver is at fault.

Was rear ended on the highway by a guy who fell asleep. I was going about 65 him probably around 70. Went about 75 yds down an embankment and stopped just short of a tree. Miracle i didn't flip.

Yeah, he's an idiot for throwing the bottle. She shouldn't have chased us drunk at those speeds. Just a bad deal all the way around. It's amazing how many stupid things you do in your 20's. You think you are invincible.
