There's no shortage, coins don't wear out like bills do. Most people have tons of Change at home. I'm sure it's a local problem.

Plenty of coins around. With so many businesses closed, coins haven’t been making it through banking system like usual. It will sort itself out as more places reopen. This was all mentioned weeks ago by banking industry.

The Mint would love to make more coins other than pennies and nickels because of the seignorage, looks good for accounting purposes.

I think it's similar to when war times come. People start hoarding change and other metals. Same with pandemic. It started a couple months ago.

Preppers are melting down coinage to make ammo and to re-enforce their re-enforced bunkers.

Especially the commemorative casino chips. Sometimes they have ones that say LTD (limited)300 but I used to have a few that were LTD 5000. Mistakenly thought they would be a good investment as I got them mint condition

Think I took them to the cage and just cashed them in

There was a legitimate coin shortage in the mid 60's as silver was removed from coinage in 1965, or reduced in the case of the half dollar.

People then withdrew the silver coins, a perfect example of Gresham's law.

Note this does not apply to nickels, they have been the same composition since the first one in 1866, except for 1942-5 that contain 35 percent silver.

According to CBS news Americans throw away $62 million in loose change each year. This is an estimate based on amount of money found per ton at recycling waste plants. There is additional change lost in vacuum cleaners, seat cushions etc

TSA reports finding $675,000 per year left on airplanes
