The Tigers were not able to solve Pittsburgh's pitching staff on the road as Trevor Williams and Chad Kuhl both turned in strong starts to lead the Pirates to wins on Monday and Tuesday. Pittsburgh counts wins in five of its last six games - including a pair of shutouts - and is getting a strong offensive contribution from center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who homered in Tuesday's 6-3 triumph and leads the team with 23 blasts. Detroit totaled six hits in the two games in Pittsburgh and has dropped four straight to go from fringe wild card contender in the American League to a team that could be looking to move more contracts prior to the August 31 waiver deadline. The Pirates will try to keep the strong pitching performances coming with Ivan Nova on Wednesday while the Tigers counter with Justin Verlander.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ivan Nova (10-8, 3.66 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (7-7, 4.20)
Nova is trying to end a string of three straight winless starts and had some trouble retiring the light-hitting San Diego Padres in his last two outings. The Dominican Republic native allowed eight runs (five earned) and 14 hits in 11 total innings over those two starts and was ripped for seven runs in five frames at Colorado on July 23. Nova is familiar with Comerica Park from his time with the New York Yankees in the American League and is 0-2 with an 8.25 ERA in three career appearances - two starts - at Detroit's home field.
Verlander reportedly made it through waivers but is not expected to be traded by the end of this month, though his results of late can only have increased his value. The former MVP surrendered three or fewer runs in each of his last six turns and struck out 10 over seven innings while scattering two runs at Baltimore on Friday. Verlander is 28-5 with a 3.03 ERA in 40 career interleague starts, including 4-2 in seven chances against Pittsburgh.
WALK-OFFS
1. Tigers OF Justin Upton is 0-for-10 in the last three games after homering in each of the previous three.
2. Pittsburgh RHP George Kontos recorded two perfect innings in as many games since joining the team in a trade from San Francisco.
3. Detroit 1B Miguel Cabrera is 2-for-19 over his last six games, dropping his batting average to .251.
PREDICTION: Tigers 5, Pirates 2
