Preview: Astros at Rangers

GAME: Houston Astros (60-48) at Texas Rangers (53-53)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 05 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: -145, 134 TOTAL: 9.5

It appears first-place Houston made a solid move in acquiring Scott Kazmir prior to the trade deadline, and the Astros hope the investment continues to pay dividends when they visit the Texas Rangers on Wednesday for the finale of their three-game series. Kazmir, the American League Pitcher of the Month for July whose 0.26 ERA during that period was the third-lowest in the month's history, has yet to allow a run in two starts since joining his hometown team and has dominated Texas.

“He was great coming out of the draft. He had a really good start to his career. He traveled different roads to get to where he is today,'' Astros manager A.J. Hinch told the Houston Chronicle about Kazmir, who was 2-0 in five starts with the Astros and Oakland in July. "Now he’s in the thick of the pennant race pitching for a team that acquired him at the deadline to be a force in his hometown. The story continues to get better. We hope to add another chapter in the rest of the year.” Kazmir on Wednesday must play the role of stopper as the Rangers made it two straight over Houston with a 4-3 victory Tuesday to climb within two games of Toronto for the final wild-card spot and six of the first-place Astros in the AL West. Nick Martinez takes the ball on his 25th birthday Wednesday after snapping a six-start winless streak (0-4) in his last turn for Texas, which has won three straight and five of six while already extending their unbeaten series string to five (4-0-1).

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Scott Kazmir (6-5, 2.10 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Nick Martinez (6-6, 4.01)

Kazmir immediately got a taste of the pennant race when he received a no-decision after allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five in 7 2/3 innings of a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. That performance - his first in an Astros uniform at Minute Maid Park - followed up a 4-0 victory at Kansas City on July 24, when he permitted three hits in seven frames. The 31-year-old is 11-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 21 starts versus Texas, including 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three turns this season while with Oakland, and has little trouble with Prince Fielder (2-for-16), who is second in the AL in batting with a .329 average.

Martinez yielded two runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 6-3 victory over San Francisco on Friday. The Florida native gave up 27 runs in 34 2/3 frames over his previous six starts, with the last five turns during that stretch coming on the road. Martinez is 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA in five games (three starts) versus Houston - all last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston CF Carlos Gomez is 8-for-23 in five games since being acquired from Milwaukee after going 2-for-4 with a home run and double Tuesday.

2. Texas RHP Shawn Tolleson on Tuesday recorded his 20th save - all since May 20 - after striking out Jason Castro and Jose Altuve with runners on second and third.

3. Kazmir's July ERA was eclipsed only by the New York Yankees' Spud Chandler (0.24 in 1941) and Frank Allen of the Boston Red Sox (0.25 in 1916).

Preview: Cardinals at Reds

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (67-39) at Cincinnati Reds (48-56)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 05 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: -146, 135 TOTAL: 7.5

Carlos Martinez has blossomed into one of the top young pitchers in the game and will go for his 12th win when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday in the second of a three-game series. The Cardinals have dominated their National League Central Division rival in recent years but have dropped three straight to the Reds over an eight-day span.

St. Louis has scored only two runs during the three-game skid versus Cincinnati - both coming via a two-run homer by Matt Carpenter in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat. Carpenter has been on a tear over the past five games, going 9-for-21 with four homers and seven RBIs. Reds right fielder Jay Bruce has hit safely in six straight games and nine of 10, and his run-scoring double Tuesday gave him 12 RBIs over the last eight contests. Marlon Byrd also delivered an RBI double in the series opener to improve to 8-for-20 with a pair of homers and five RBIs in his past five games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (11-4, 2.61 ERA) vs. Reds LH David Holmberg (1-0, 3.00)

Martinez is coming off his worst outing in nearly three months, lasting only five innings while yielding five runs and a season-high 10 hits in a no-decision against the Cubs. That ended a string of 11 consecutive quality starts for Martinez, who had allowed a total of two runs in his previous four starts. Martinez faced the Reds six days apart in April, posting a 1-0 mark while giving up three runs and seven hits in 12 innings.

Holmberg was victorious in his season debut versus Pittsburgh on Thursday, surrendering two runs on five hits over six innings to earn his third career victory. The 24-year-old Houston native made four starts in September last year, going 2-1 while allowing a total of five runs. Holmberg's lone setback during that span was in St. Louis, when he gave up a pair of solo home runs in a 2-1 loss to the Cardinals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds LHP Aroldis Chapman has converted 56 straight save chances at home and notched 23 consecutive scoreless appearances versus the Cardinals.

2. Cardinals CF Randal Grichuk is riding a seven-game hitting streak.

3. The Reds activated LHP Manny Parra off the 15-day disabled list and optioned OF Kyle Waldrop to Triple-A Louisville.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 6, Reds 3

Preview: Padres at Brewers

GAME: San Diego Padres (52-55) at Milwaukee Brewers (45-63)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 05 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: 108, -117 TOTAL: 7.5

The San Diego Padres kept their team intact at the trade deadline in hopes of contending this season but cannot afford too many more losses. The Padres will try to avoid back-to-back setbacks when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers for the third contest of a four-game series Wednesday.

San Diego picked up its eighth win in 10 games with a 13-5 drubbing of the Brewers in Monday’s series opener but watched its offense crash in a 4-1 setback Tuesday. The Padres sit seven games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card in the National League and need to make the most of a stretch that will not include another opponent with a winning record until the St. Louis Cardinals visit Aug. 21. The Brewers, who sit in last place in the NL Central, snapped a six-game slide Tuesday and are trying to win back-to-back games for the first time since a four-game streak coming out of the All-Star break. Milwaukee throws promising rookie Taylor Jungmann against San Diego veteran Ian Kennedy on Wednesday.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Ian Kennedy (6-9, 4.44 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Taylor Jungmann (5-3, 2.23)

Kennedy was reinstated from the paternity list after spending three days with his family following the birth of his fourth child and will not miss a start. The veteran stayed with the team through the trade deadline and will try to build on a strong start Friday in which he allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings at Miami. Kennedy is 2-3 with a 3.71 ERA in eight career starts against Milwaukee.

Jungmann took the loss in each of his last two starts despite allowing a total of four earned runs in 11 2/3 innings. The rookie from Texas yielded two or fewer earned runs in each of his last seven turns and nine of 10 overall. Jungmann is making his first start against the Padres and is 1-2 with a 1.99 ERA in four home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres LF Justin Upton (bruised right thumb) was held out of the lineup Tuesday and is day-to-day.

2. Milwaukee RF Ryan Braun has four doubles in his last three games.

3. San Diego 3B Yangervis Solarte has hit safely in 10 straight games.

PREDICTION: Padres 3, Brewers 2

MLB Wednesday Scouting Report

12:10 Seattle Mariners at Colorado Rockies

Taijuan Walker Goes to the Mound – Anything Can Happen
Taijuan Walker drives me crazy. It’s like going to a restaurant in a foreign country that you have never heard of! You just don’t know what to expect. That is Mr. Walker in a nutshell. Walker is 8-7 with a 4.73 era. You might wonder how he won 8 games with such an inflated era. In his last start he went the full 9 innings against the Twins allowing just 1 run and 1 hit (HR) while fanning 11. In his previous 2 starts he went a total of 10 1/3 innings allowing 10 runs, 8 earned, on 13 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 10. In the 2 starts before that he went 11 innings and gave up 11 runs and 13 hits and gave up 3 home runs. So in the 4 previous starts he went 21 1/3 innings allowing 19 earned runs and 26 hits. Prior to those 4 disasters he threw another 6 innings giving up just 1 hit and 0 runs. And before that he went 7 innings allowing 1 run and 7 hits. So your guess is as good as mine regarding his performance today. Walker opened as a -125 favorite.

4pm Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

New Pitcher Severino Goes for Bronx Bombers
Just who is Luis Severino? For one thing, he’s the starting pitcher for the NYY today. He’s spent parts of 4 seasons in the minor leagues. He has no experience in the majors. He’s 6 feet tall and weighs 195 pounds and is only 21 years old. He’s coming up from Scranton/Wilkes- Barre in the International League, at the Triple-A level. He went 7-0 there with a 1.91 era. Prior to that he was at Trenton in Double-A ball where he ws 2-2 with a 332 era in 2014. His K/BB ration dwindled as he moved up the ladder from A ball to Triple-a where it was about 3:1. Overall his minor league record was 23-11 with a 2.30 era in more than 300 innings. Severino has been considered the #1 prospect in the Yankee organization for the past 2 years. His name was bandied about in trade rumors for such names as Cole Hamels, Johnny Cueto and David Price. But the Yankees refused to budge and include Severino in any trades. Severino opened as a -170 favorite which tells you what the linemakers think about him.

4:05 pm Minnosota Twins at Toronto Blue Jays

New Pitcher Duffey Goes for Twins
Unlike Severino, Duffy isn’t getting any respect from the linemakers. He opened on the other side of -189 which quickly zoomed to -200. Like Severino, Duffy hasn’t thrown a pitch in MLB regular season play. Duffey is right handed, stands 6’3? tall and weighs in at 220. He comes from Rochester in the Triple-A International League where he was 4-5 with a 2.72 era. Earlier Duffey was with Chattanooga in Double-A ball where he went 2-2 with a 2.56 era. Overall Duffey was 28-28 in 4 seasons of minor league ball with a 3.25 era. Duffey was drafted in the 5th round of the 2012 drafat out of Rice.

4:05 pm Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers

KC Batters Should Get Healthy at Boyd’s Expense
Matt Boyd will make his first start for the Tigers after being acquired in a trade. Hopefully he will improve a great deal from his starts for Toronto. Boyd made 2 starts for Toronto and came away with a gigantic era of 14.85! All in all in MLB Biyd has thrown 6 2/3 innings in his 2 starts and given up 15 hits and 11 earned runs. A full 33% of those hits were 4 baggers. At least his whip was only 2.40. Boyd’s K/BB ration was a nice 7:1. Boyd’s major league struggles come as a little bit of a surprise because he had a good minor league record. He went 9-2 with a 1.62 era in the minors. At Triple-A Buffalo he had an era 0f 2.72. Unfortunately Boyd is going against Johnny Cueto. Cueto opened as a -170 favorite.

5:05 pm Houston Astros at Texas Rangers

Kazmir Brings Scoreless Streak to Globe Life Park
Scott Kazmir Brings a 14 2/3 inning scoreless streak when the Astros meet cross town rival Texas. Since being traded to the Astros from Oakland, Kazmir has yet to allow a run. His July era of 0.26 was the 3rd lowest in MLB history. Kazmire is 6-5 on the year with a 2.10 era which tells you what kind of support he got in Oakland. In his last 7 starts he has gone 3-1 with an era of just 0.93. In his firt 15 stars he went 4-5 with an era of 2.27. He’s only allowed 1 earned run in his last 23 innings. Kazmir’s era is 0.39 in his last 3 starts which doesn’t bode well for the Rangers. Their starter, Nick Martinez, has a 7.63 era in his last 3 starts. Kazmir has shut out Texas twice this year, one for 7 innings and another for 8 innings. He only allowed 1 hit in each of those appearances. In his other start he went 6 innings giving up 3 hits and 3 runs on 2 round trippers.
