Preview: Athletics at Rangers

GAME: Oakland Athletics (46-55) at Texas Rangers (58-43)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 27 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Oakland Athletics look to win their fourth consecutive series since the All-Star break when they visit the American League West-leading Texas Rangers on Wednesday for the rubber match of their three-game set. After ending the first half of the season by splitting a four-game series at Houston, the Athletics took two of three from both Toronto and the Astros before going 3-1 against Tampa Bay to conclude their 10-game homestand.

Oakland dropped a 7-6 decision in the opener versus Texas before notching a 6-3 victory on Tuesday to remain one-half game ahead of the last-place Los Angeles Angels in the AL West. Texas struggled heading into the break, losing nine of 12, and did the same coming out as it began the second half by dropping six of seven before ending its 10-game road trip with a pair of victories at Kansas City. The Rangers were fortunate to maintain their 3 1/2-game division lead as second-place Houston also suffered a 6-3 loss (to the New York Yankees) on Tuesday. Top prospect Joey Gallo went deep after being recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Round Rock, where he belted 19 homers in 70 games this season.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Sean Manaea (3-5, 4.61 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yu Darvish (2-2, 3.12)

Manaea is coming off the best start of his brief career as he scattered five hits and struck out seven over eight scoreless innings against Tampa Bay on Friday but settled for a no-decision. The 24-year-old native of Indiana has kept the opposition off the scoreboard in three of his five outings since returning from the disabled list and has yielded a total of two runs over 20 frames in his last three turns. Manaea made two starts against the Rangers earlier this season, notching a win at home on May 16 before settling for a no-decision at Texas on June 13.

When healthy, Darvish has been effective this season, allowing three runs or fewer in each of his five starts. The 29-year-old from Japan has lost both of his outings since returning from the disabled list despite giving up five runs - four earned - and registering 20 strikeouts over 10 1/3 innings. Darvish has struggled mightily against Oakland in his career, going 1-8 with a 4.94 ERA in 10 starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. To make room on the roster for Gallo, the Rangers optioned OF Jared Hoying to Round Rock.

2. Oakland optioned C Matt McBride and RHP Daniel Mengden to Triple-A Nashville while activating C Stephen Vogt from the family medical leave list.

3. Texas designated veteran Kyle Lohse for assignment to clear a roster spot for fellow RHP Nick Martinez, who surrendered five runs and six hits - three homers - in four innings on Tuesday.

Preview: White Sox at Cubs

GAME: Chicago White Sox (50-50) at Chicago Cubs (59-40)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 27 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago White Sox have a long way to go to get back in the American League Central race, but they’re back to .500 and are riding their longest winning streak since early May. The visiting White Sox look to keep the hot streak going and lock up the season series against the crosstown-rival Chicago Cubs on Wednesday at Wrigley Field.

The White Sox have won four straight, matching their longest streak since May 6-9, while the first-place Cubs have dropped three of their last four. After leaving 11 men on base in Monday’s 5-4 loss, the Cubs’ offensive woes took on another form Tuesday as they managed only four hits – all singles – in a 3-0 defeat. The Cubs will be eager to get back to the North Side, where they are 30-16, and the homecoming will be especially welcome for right-hander Jason Hammel, who is 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA in eight home starts. Since interleague play began in 1997, 61 of the 106 meetings between the crosstown rivals have been decided by three runs or fewer.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN Chicago (White Sox), WGN (Cubs)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Anthony Ranaudo (1-0, 17.18 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (9-5, 3.35)

Ranaudo was acquired from Texas on May 12 and is set to make his White Sox debut. The 6-7, 26-year-old was roughed up in two relief appearances for the Rangers and is making his first big-league start since June of 2015. Ranaudo has never faced the Cubs.

Hammel seems to have turned things around after a six-start winless streak that included one disastrous outing. The 33-year-old wasn’t at his best last time out but was able to hold Milwaukee to two runs over five innings to win his second straight start. Hammel is 1-2 with a 4.01 ERA in nine games (four starts) against the White Sox.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox LF Melky Cabrera, who is 16-for-44 during an 11-game hitting streak, is 5-for-16 with two homers versus Hammel.

2. Cubs slugger Kris Bryant was used as the DH on Tuesday and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, snapping an eight-game hitting streak.

3. White Sox RF Adam Eaton is 5-for-14 with two homers and six RBIs over the past four games.

Preview: Yankees at Astros

GAME: New York Yankees (52-48) at Houston Astros (54-46)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 27 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Pitching has fueled the current hot streak of the New York Yankees, who will send ace Masahiro Tanaka to the mound on Wednesday for the finale of a three-game series against the host Houston Astros. New York will be bidding for a sweep as it seeks its fourth consecutive victory.

The Yankees have won eight of their last 10 contests, permitting a total of 17 runs in that span to move a season-high four games over .500. The bottom of New York's lineup has come up big in the first two games of the series, with the Nos. 6-9 hitters combining for 10 hits and eight RBIs. The Astros had won 22 of 30 entering the series but will be looking to avoid dropping three in a row for the first time since a four-game skid from May 19-22. Houston had scored four runs in the first two games, all coming via solo home runs.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 3.00 ERA) vs. Astros RH Lance McCullers (5-4, 3.33 ERA)

Tanaka settled for a no-decision despite delivering a stellar effort against San Francisco last time out, blanking the Giants on four hits over six innings. He also worked six frames in his previous turn, beating Boston by giving up one run and only three hits. Tanaka faced the Astros on Opening Day and did not factor in the decision with 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball.

McCullers is coming off a dominant outing, matching his season high with 10 strikeouts (including three of Mike Trout) while giving up one run and four hits in eight innings to beat the Los Angeles Angels. The only blemish was his ongoing control issues - McCullers has walked at least four batters in three straight starts. He is 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA in eight home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston 1B Marwin Gonzalez became the first member of the Astros to homer from both sides of plate in the same game since Lance Berkman (2006).

2. Yankees CF Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 on Tuesday after collecting four hits in his previous 27 at-bats.

3. Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is listed as day-to-day after suffering a right hamstring strain.

Preview: Braves at Twins

GAME: Atlanta Braves (34-66) at Minnesota Twins (37-62)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 27 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Atlanta Braves attempt to complete a sweep of their brief two-game interleague set against the host Minnesota Twins when the two worst teams in the major leagues meet at Target Field on Wednesday. Atlanta, which owns the worst record in baseball at 34-66, ended its five-game losing streak Tuesday with a 2-0 triumph in the series opener as Adonis Garcia homered while Lucas Harrell and four relievers combined on a five-hitter.

Garcia enters the finale with an eight-game hitting streak during which he has recorded three homers and four multi-hit performances - including Tuesday's 2-for-4 effort. Minnesota, which is an American League-worst 37-62, has lost two straight after winning four of its previous five contests. The Twins wasted a strong complete-game performance by Ervin Santana in the series opener, going 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Kennys Vargas recorded one of Minnesota's five hits on Tuesday and is 5-for-13 with three doubles and three RBIs during his four-game hitting streak.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (3-4, 3.79 ERA) vs. Twins RH Tyler Duffey (5-7, 5.71)

Foltynewicz has allowed three runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts, going 2-1 in those outings. The 24-year-old native of Illinois suffered the loss at Colorado on Thursday after yielding three runs on four hits and five walks over 5 2/3 innings. Foltynewicz has made one relief appearance against Minnesota in his career, surrendering three runs and three hits - two homers - in one frame.

Duffey has been tagged for at least four runs in 10 of his last 12 starts and is 2-5 in those turns. The 25-year-old Texan was reached for six runs for the fifth time in that stretch on Thursday, when he yielded nine hits over 2 1/3 innings in a loss at Boston. Duffey, who never has faced Atlanta, is 2-3 with a 7.20 ERA in eight home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins C Kurt Suzuki went 1-for-3 in his return to the lineup Tuesday, three days after a foul tip to his mask resulted in eight stitches on his chin.

2. Atlanta RHP Julio Teheran is expected to start against Philadelphia on Saturday after leaving his outing versus Colorado on Friday with tightness in his right lat.

3. Minnesota 3B Trevor Plouffe (rib) hopes to begin a rehab assignment by the end of the week.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Brewers

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (41-59) at Milwaukee Brewers (43-55)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 27 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Milwaukee Brewers have scored 16 runs in the first two games of the series and attempt to defeat the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks for the third straight night on Wednesday in the third contest of their four-game set. Milwaukee scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning of Tuesday's 9-4 victory and has collected 23 hits while outscoring the Diamondbacks by 10 in the two victories.

Ryan Braun reached base three times and scored three runs on Tuesday while extending his hitting streak to 11 games as the Brewers sent Arizona to its sixth loss in seven contests. Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who is batting .301 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs, is the subject of trade speculation - with the New York Mets rumored to be in hot pursuit. Arizona manager Chip Hale held Jake Lamb out of Tuesday's lineup due to a bruised left hand that had rendered the third baseman hitless with 10 strikeouts in his last 19 at-bats. "He saw something and he asked me about it, and it's gotten to the point now where I think it's affected my swing and I'm not coming through helping my team," Lamb told reporters. "So we're going to take it day by day and just see how it feels."

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (3-6, 4.44 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (6-8, 3.40)

Bradley is 0-3 over his last six starts despite allowing more than three runs on just one occasion during that stretch. He had control issues in his last outing - walking a season-high five batters in five innings - while allowing three runs and five hits in a loss to Cincinnati. Bradley has served up just two homers in seven road starts while giving up nine in six home outings.

Nelson is saddled with a 1-5 record over his last nine turns despite giving up two or fewer earned runs six times during that span. He lost to the Chicago Cubs in his last start as he gave up four runs - two earned - and four hits over five innings. Nelson is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two career starts against the Diamondbacks.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt is 5-for-10 in the series after going 2-for-16 over his previous five contests.

2. Milwaukee 2B Scooter Gennett, who is 4-for-8 with a homer in the series, has collected six RBIs over his last three games.

3. Arizona LF David Peralta (back) is expected to return to the team on Friday as he nears completion of a rehab stint.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (45-55) at Kansas City Royals (48-51)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 27 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Kansas City Royals are fresh off their worst home loss since 2002 and look to avert a three-game sweep when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Kansas City was shellacked 13-0 on Tuesday to lose for the sixth time in its last seven games while Los Angeles equaled a season high with 22 hits.

Los Angeles' Yunel Escobar matched a personal best with five hits and Kole Calhoun equaled his career high of four RBIs in Tuesday's rout. Carlos Perez recorded four hits and Albert Pujols registered his 27th RBI of the month - most in the majors. The Royals, who are a dismal 6-15 in July, have scored just 17 runs over their last seven contests and have slipped three games below .500. Kansas City has experienced success against Angels starter Matt Shoemaker in the past, with Salvador Perez (6-for-8, one homer) and Eric Hosmer (4-for-8) faring extremely well.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (5-10, 3.99 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (6-1, 3.14)

Shoemaker lost to Houston in his last outing as he gave up two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings. He tossed his first career shutout in his previous turn, when he struck out a career-high 13 and allowed six hits against the Chicago White Sox. Shoemaker has been torched in three career starts against Kansas City, going 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA and .464 batting average against in just 10 2/3 innings.

Duffy is looking to win his sixth consecutive decision and he has allowed two or fewer runs in four of his last five turns. He has pitched into the seventh inning in each of those five outings, striking out 34 against just four walks. Duffy is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against the Angels and has struggled against Mike Trout (3-for-6, one homer).

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals CF Lorenzo Cain (hamstring) will begin a rehab stint at Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.

2. Los Angeles designated OF Todd Cunningham for assignment on Tuesday to open a roster spot for LHP Tyler Skaggs, who pitched seven scoreless innings.

3. Kansas City recalled 2B Raul Mondesi - the top prospect turns 21 on Wednesday - and the son of the former outfielder of the same name went 0-for-3 on Tuesday in his regular-season debut (he played in the 2015 World Series).
