Preview: Marlins at Twins

GAME: Miami Marlins (30-28) at Minnesota Twins (17-40)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Ricky Nolasco's name is etched alongside many of the Miami Marlins' pitching records, most notably wins (81) and strikeouts (1,001). The veteran will make his first career start versus the team with which he spent parts of eight seasons when the host Minnesota Twins vie for an interleague series victory over the Marlins on Wednesday.

"Obviously, it's a little different facing them, but I'm pretty excited," Nolasco told the Miami Herald. "It feels like it has been a long time since I’ve been there, but I was there a lot of years, have a lot of great memories." Eduardo Nunez is creating plenty of memories of late, recording his first career multi-homer performance in Tuesday's 6-4 triumph in 11 innings to improve to 23-for-55 (.418) with six homers and 13 runs scored in his last 12 games. Wei-Yin Chen will look to stop the bleeding for the Marlins, who have yielded six runs in three of their last four outings (1-3).

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Wei-Yin Chen (3-2, 4.25 ERA) vs. Twins RH Nicky Nolasco (2-4, 4.93)

Chen carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Thursday before settling for his third straight no-decision in his team's 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old native of Taiwan was charged for two runs on just one hit versus the Pirates but walked three batters for the second time in three outings. Chen has enjoyed success against Minnesota, versus which he improved to 3-1 after allowing just one run over six strong innings in his last encounter.

Nolasco fell to 1-4 in his last six starts on Friday despite permitting three runs in 7 2/3 innings of a 4-2 setback against Tampa Bay. The 33-year-old hasn't been giving the Target Field faithful a thrill this season, posting an 0-2 record with a bloated 6.23 ERA. Veteran Martin Prado collected a pair of doubles in the opener and is 18-for-51 (.353) lifetime versus Nolasco.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami OF Giancarlo Stanton is mired in an 8-for-78 (.103) slump in his last 22 games.

2. Minnesota 2B Brian Dozier, whose two-run blast ended Tuesday's tilt, has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 contests.

3. Marlins LF Christian Yelich has collected five RBIs during his seven-game hitting streak.

Preview: Athletics at Brewers

GAME: Oakland Athletics (25-33) at Milwaukee Brewers (27-31)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Chris Carter gave the Oakland Athletics a glimpse of his power potential in his third season in the majors, when he clubbed 16 home runs in only 67 games with the team. Now with Milwaukee, Carter looks to lead the Brewers to a sweep of their abbreviated two-game interleague series against the visiting Athletics on Wednesday.

Carter provided all the offense for Milwaukee in Tuesday's 5-4 victory with a pair of homers and five RBIs, giving him 16 blasts for the season. Jonathan Lucroy is batting .500 (18-for-36) during his 10-game hitting streak for the Brewers, who have won nine of their last 14 contests. The Athletics were hitless through six innings Tuesday before a belated rally fell short as they dropped to 0-4 on their eight-game road trip. Oakland's Billy Butler homered and drove in three runs in the series opener to give him 10 RBIs in his last eight games.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Jesse Hahn (2-3, 6.10 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Chase Anderson (3-6, 4.68)

Hahn is coming off a forgettable outing in which he could not make it through the first inning, getting battered for seven runs and six hits while retiring only two batters at Houston on Friday. Hahn had his best performance in his season debut versus those same Astros with 6 2/3 scoreless innings of three-hit ball. The 26-year-old from Connecticut picked up the victory against Detroit on May 28 after allowing three runs in six innings while recording a season-high five strikeouts.

Although he failed to go past six innings for the 10th time in 11 starts, Anderson is coming off a strong outing at Philadelphia in which he struck out six while permitting one run and three hits over 5 2/3 innings. The lone run came on a solo homer - the 13th blast surrendered by the 28-year-old in his last nine turns. He did not factor in the decision in his lone start versus Oakland in 2015, giving up two runs and five hits over six frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers LF Ryan Braun became the fifth player in team history to collect 1,500 hits.

2. Athletics LF Khris Davis (finger numbness) and 3B Danny Espinosa (stomach bug) each sat out the series opener.

3. Milwaukee RHP Tyler Thornburg has retired 26 straight batters, tied for the third-longest streak in club history.

Preview: Nationals at White Sox

GAME: Washington Nationals (35-23) at Chicago White Sox (29-29)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

James Shields returns to the American League following an ill-fated stint with San Diego and makes his first start for the Chicago White Sox since he was acquired from the Padres over the weekend. Shields couldn't draw a much tougher assignment Wednesday as he opposes Max Scherzer and the visiting Washington Nationals in the middle contest of a three-game interleague series.

Shields finished 13-7 last year in his first season with the Padres to extend his streak to nine consecutive campaigns with double-digit victories. The 34-year-old has made 11 career starts at U.S. Cellular Field, logging a 4-1 record and a 3.00 ERA. Scherzer has alternated wins and losses over his last seven trips to the mound and will be looking to win back-to-back starts for the first time since April 11 and 16. Anthony Rendon homered and matched Bryce Harper with three RBIs as the Nationals rolled to a 10-5 win on Tuesday and handed Chicago its 11th loss in 13 games.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (6-4, 3.87 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (2-7, 4.28)

Scherzer is coming off a dominant outing, striking out 11 while allowing two runs and five hits over eight innings in a victory at Philadelphia on June 1. His only hiccup was a late two-run homer, continuing a trend that has seen him get taken deep 11 times over his last six turns and 16 times on the season. Todd Frazier is hitless in five at-bats against Scherzer, who is 12-6 with a 2.54 ERA versus the White Sox while splitting 10 decisions at Chicago.

Shields' tenure in San Diego ended on an ugly note as he was shelled for 10 runs in 2 2/3 innings of a 16-4 loss at Seattle on May 31, a performance Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler called an "embarrassment to the team." Ironically, it marked the best run support of the season for Shields, who received three runs or fewer in each of his first 10 outings. Shields took the loss versus Washington last season, giving up five runs over 5 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox CF Austin Jackson collected two hits in his return from a six-game absence and has hit safely in his last five contests.

2. Rendon went 3-for-5 on Tuesday and has recorded multiple hits in nine of his last 18 games.

3. Chicago LHP Carlos Rodon will be skipped for Thursday's start due to neck discomfort and replaced by RHP Miguel Gonzalez.

Preview: Indians at Mariners

GAME: Cleveland Indians (32-25) at Seattle Mariners (32-26)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Nelson Cruz is displaying signs of finding his power stroke and looks to follow up his first two-homer game of the season when the Seattle Mariners host the Cleveland Indians in Wednesday's third contest of a four-game set. Cruz has belted five of his 15 homers in the past six games after his two blasts Tuesday accounted for three of the runs in the 7-1 victory.

Cruz hit a career-best 44 homers in his first season with the Mariners and his recent flurry has catapulted him into a tie for fifth place in the American League. Five different Seattle players had two hits as the Mariners snapped a four-game slide with Tuesday's victory - an outcome that also ended Cleveland's season-best six-game winning streak. The Indians had only six hits while ending a stretch of 16 consecutive games in which they scored two or more runs and Lonnie Chisenhall's eighth-inning homer prevented their first shutout since May 7. Seattle right-hander Taijuan Walker is seeking to halt a six-game losing streak but has dominated the Indians in three career starts, winning each time and compiling an 0.45 ERA in 20 innings.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (2-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Taijuan Walker (2-6, 3.94)

Carrasco is making his second start since spending five-plus weeks on the disabled list because of a hamstring injury. He returned against Kansas City on Thursday and gave up three runs and nine hits in five innings during a no-decision and Cleveland pushed him back a day in this series to give him more rest. Carrasco is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against the Mariners and has struggled mightily against Robinson Cano, who is 5-for-11 with a homer and two doubles against him.

Walker defeated Cleveland on April 20 when he allowed one unearned run and three hits in six innings. He is mired in a seven-start winless stretch and has seen a 1.44 ERA soar toward 4.00. Walker has served up five homers in his last two outings - he has given up 11 in his last six starts - while being rocked for 11 runs and 15 hits in 9 1/3 innings versus Minnesota and Texas in his last two turns.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians C Yan Gomes (testicular contusion) departed in the second inning of Tuesday's game after being struck by a foul tip.

2. Seattle CF Leonys Martin (hamstring) is slated to play a simulated game Wednesday and is eligible to come off the disabled list Friday.

3. Cano had two hits and scored twice one night after having his career-best streak of reaching base in 34 consecutive games halted.

Preview: Rockies at Dodgers

GAME: Colorado Rockies (26-32) at Los Angeles Dodgers (32-28)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Youth is being served in Los Angeles, where 25-year-old Trayce Thompson is quickly becoming a fixture in the Dodgers outfield. Along with 22-year-old shortstop Corey Seager and 19-year-old pitcher Julio Urias, Thompson is part of a promising young core for the Dodgers, who host the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Thompson belted his second walk-off homer of the season Tuesday to give the Dodgers a 4-3 victory and help them pull within three games of first-place San Francisco in the National League West. “We started to see progress in 2015, over 2014, and he’s continued to take another step forward this year and it’s been great to watch,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told MLB.com. Los Angeles has gone 14-4 in its last 18 home games against the Rockies, who have fallen six games under .500 despite the play of third baseman Nolan Arenado, who leads the NL with 18 home runs. Rockies shortstop Trevor Story has been a revelation with 16 home runs, but the rookie leads the majors with 85 strikeouts after adding four more on Tuesday.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Chris Rusin (1-4, 4.62 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (5-3, 2.84)

Rusin allowed four runs (three earned) over seven innings last Wednesday against San Diego and dropped his fourth straight decision. The 29-year-old is 0-4 with a 6.00 ERA in six starts this season while going 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA in five relief appearances. Adrian Gonzalez is 3-for-7 against Rusin, who is 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA in four career games (three starts) against Los Angeles.

Maeda won his second straight start Friday while holding Atlanta to two runs (one earned) on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. “Kenta has a lot of heart,” manager Dave Roberts told reporters. “He’s going to find a way to compete and give us a chance to win.” The 28-year-old has not allowed a home run in his last four starts and earned the victory against Colorado on April 23 at Coors Field, allowing three hits while striking out a season-high eight batters in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers have won 11 of their last 14 home games.

2. Colorado reliever Adam Ottavino, who had Tommy John surgery last May, is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Friday.

3. Dodgers 2B Chase Utley is four runs shy of 1,000 for his career.

Preview: Red Sox at Giants

GAME: Boston Red Sox (34-24) at San Francisco Giants (35-25)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 10:15 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox own the most prolific offense in baseball but will be put to a stern test Wednesday when they visit the first-place San Francisco Giants with red-hot Madison Bumgarner on the mound. Bumgarner is 6-0 with a 1.11 ERA in his last eight starts and opposes David Price, who makes his first appearance at AT&T Park in a battle of ace left-handers after Boston prevailed in the opener of the two-game series 5-3 in 10 innings Tuesday.

San Francisco catcher Buster Posey revealed he has been dealing with nerve irritation in his right thumb before missing his second straight game Tuesday and manager Bruce Bochy said his All-Star catcher might not play Wednesday. The Giants have lost three straight after seeing their five-game home winning streak halted, but still enjoy a three-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. Boston, which trails Baltimore by one-half game in the American League East, averages 5.9 runs per game. David Ortiz drove in a run as a pinch hitter Tuesday and manager John Ferrell is expected to keep his 40-year-old slugger in that role Wednesday as he seizes an opportunity to rest Ortiz without the benefit of a designated hitter in the NL park.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (7-2, 4.88 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (7-2, 1.91)

Price is also on a bit of roll as he is 3-1 in his last five turns — all quality starts — while lowering his ERA 1.87 during that span. The 30-year-old Tennessee native suffered his first loss in nearly a month with a 5-2 setback to Toronto on Friday when he allowed three runs (two earned) and a season-high four walks in seven innings. Price is 0-1 with a 3.06 ERA in two starts versus San Francisco, including a 5-4 loss facing Bumgarner and the Giants while with Detroit on Sept. 6, 2014.

Bumgarner, who has 13 career home runs including two this season and five in 2015, expressed his desire to participate in the Home Run Derby prior to the All-Star Game, but manager Bruce Bochy told Bumgarner he'll be sticking exclusively with his day job. The 26-year-old North Carolina native is doing that well as he matched a season high with 11 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of a 6-0 victory in Atlanta on Thursday. Bumgarner is 7-7 with a 3.76 ERA in 17 interleague starts, including a loss in his only outing against Boston during his rookie season of 2010, and has fared well against Hanley Ramirez (5-for-28, six strikeouts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia went 1-for-5 on Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to 14 games — the longest active streak in the majors. He also has the highest batting average in interleague history at .3398, just ahead of soon-to-be Hall of Famer Mike Piazza (.3395) among players with at least 400 at-bats.

2. San Francisco is hitting .201 in its last eight games (3-5).

3. Ortiz's RBI on Tuesday was the 1,696th of his career, moving him ahead of Cal Ripken Jr. and into sole possession of 26th place on the all-time list.
