Preview: Cubs at Phillies

GAME: Chicago Cubs (40-17) at Philadelphia Phillies (29-30)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Philadelphia Phillies will vie for a bit of payback on Wednesday afternoon as they attempt to claim a series victory versus the visiting Chicago Cubs. Philadelphia has won three of its last five on the heels of a season-high seven-game losing skid that began with an emphatic three-game sweep at Wrigley Field on May 27-29.

Maikel Franco ripped an RBI single in Tuesday's 3-2 triumph and has seven hits since going 1-for-9 against Chicago in last month's lopsided series. Odubel Herrera is 6-for-10 with two runs scored in his last three games and is 3-for-7 versus Wednesday starter John Lackey. Chicago's Ben Zobrist is mired in a funk of late, following a red-hot 16-game hitting streak with an ice-cold 0-for-16 stretch over the last six contests. The 35-year-old looks for a repeat performance versus Wednesday starter Vince Velasquez, against whom he belted a three-run homer in Chicago's 7-2 victory over Philadelphia on May 29.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Chicago, CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH John Lackey (6-2, 2.88 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (5-2, 3.67)

Lackey won his second straight start in scintillating fashion on Friday, scattering five hits - all singles - and striking out nine in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-0 rout of Arizona. The 37-year-old handcuffed Philadelphia on May 29 by allowing just one run on four hits in seven frames to improve to 4-4 versus the club. Ryan Howard homered on Tuesday in his first start since May 31 and has gone deep on two occasions as part of his 3-for-16 career performance versus Lackey.

Velasquez recorded yet another early exit on Friday as the 24-year-old tossed just 94 pitches en route to departing after 4 1/3 innings. Velasquez was blitzed for a season-high seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 frames versus the Cubs on May 29. The hurler has failed to pitch more than six innings since scattering three hits in a shutout versus San Diego on April 19.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago placed OF Jorge Soler (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled OF prospect Albert Almora from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.

2. Phillies SS Freddy Galvis is 6-for-20 (.300) with one homer, three RBIs and as many runs scored in five games versus the Cubs this season.

3. Philadelphia owns a majors-best 15-5 mark in one-game games while Chicago is just 7-8.

Preview: Blue Jays at Tigers

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (31-29) at Detroit Tigers (30-28)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers pounded the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series and waited a little longer to break out the bats and earn a crushing win on Tuesday. The Tigers will try to polish off the three-game sweep when they host the Blue Jays in the finale on Wednesday.

Detroit is doing it on both sides of the ball in a five-game winning streak and cruised to an 11-0 win over Toronto on Monday. The Tigers had trouble figuring out Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez through the first eight innings on Tuesday but tied it with a pair of runs in the ninth before Ian Kinsler, who doubled home a run in the ninth, delivered a walk-off single in the 3-2 triumph in the 10th. Toronto was on a roll with nine wins in 11 games before coming to Detroit and watching the bats go silent. The Blue Jays offense averaged 5.5 runs in those 11 games but totaled two in the first two against the Tigers and received a total of three hits from the top seven spots in the batting order – none from the top three – in the two contests.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH R.A. Dickey (3-6, 4.21 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (8-2, 2.58)

Dickey has carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning in each of his last two starts and picked up a win at Boston on Friday while allowing an unearned run and two hits in 6 2/3 frames. The veteran knuckleballer had his signature pitch moving all over the place in those two outings and ended up totaling nine walks in 12 frames. Dickey split a pair of starts against the Tigers last season, getting ripped for five runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings at Detroit on July 4.

Zimmermann returned to the mound on Friday after skipping a start due to a groin strain and held the Chicago White Sox to two runs in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. The Wisconsin native did not allow more than one earned run in any of his first five starts but posted a 4.59 ERA over the last five outings. Zimmermann made a pair of interleague starts against Toronto as a member of the Washington Nationals and yielded a total of one run in 13 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Blue Jays on Tuesday designated 3B Matt Dominguez for assignment and recalled switch-pitcher Pat Venditte.

2. Tigers LF Justin Upton is 6-for-12 with five RBIs and four runs scored in the last three games.

3. Detroit traded RHP Jose Valdez, who was designated for assignment last week, to the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.

Preview: Rays at Diamondbacks

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (26-31) at Arizona Diamondbacks (26-35)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 3:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays look to finish their 10-game road trip with a .500 record when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday for the rubber match of a three-game interleague set. The Rays were shut out by Zack Greinke on Tuesday in a 5-0 defeat after winning four consecutive contests and come into the finale at 4-5 on their trek.

Tampa Bay hopes to have red-hot third baseman Evan Longoria, who boasts a 10-game hitting streak, back on Wednesday after he sat out Tuesday’s game with body soreness. The Rays send Jake Odorizzi to the mound against youngster Archie Bradley of the Diamondbacks, who are just 3-6 in their last nine outings. Paul Goldschmidt belted his first homer in eight games Tuesday, but has posted four RBIs in his last three games for Arizona as it tries to stay in the National League West race. Jake Lamb owns four homers and nine RBIs in his last nine games for the Diamondbacks, including a three-run blast on Tuesday.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Jake Odorizzi (2-3, 3.33 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (2-1, 4.94)

Odorizzi allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his last eight starts, but is just 2-2 in that span after a no-decision Friday when he limited Minnesota to a pair in six innings. The 26-year-old walked at least three batters in three of the last four outings and struck out 19 in the past three. Odorizzi is 5-3 with a 3.18 ERA in interleague play, striking out 70 in 70 2/3 innings, while he prepares to face Arizona for the first time.

Bradley comes in off the best of his four starts this season when he allowed one run with 10 strikeouts over six innings against the host Chicago Cubs, but took the loss after winning his previous two. The 2011 seventh overall pick completed at least six innings in his last three outings. The 23-year-old Bradley won his only interleague outing last year, yielding one run and two hits over six innings against Texas.

WALK-OFFS

1. Arizona C Welington Castillo has recorded multiple hits in three of his last five contests, going 6-for-19 in that stretch.

2. Tampa Bay 1B Logan Morrison has hit safely in 15 of the last 17 games, registering six homers and 14 RBIs in that span.

3. The Diamondbacks are 22-0 with a lead after seven innings and 19-1 in the same scenario through six frames.

Preview: Braves at Padres

GAME: Atlanta Braves (16-42) at San Diego Padres (25-35)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 3:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres kept their long home winning streak against Atlanta intact with a frantic rally and aim to complete a three-game sweep when they host the Braves in Wednesday's finale. The Padres pushed across two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 4-3 victory Tuesday to record their 12th consecutive win over the Braves at Petco Park.

Catcher Derek Norris hit a tying leadoff homer to start the ninth and Wil Myers delivered the game-winning single later in the inning as the Padres sent struggling Atlanta to its sixth straight overall loss. The Braves, who own the worst record in the majors at 16-42, haven't won a game in downtown San Diego since the 2012 season. Atlanta has been outscored 37-13 during its current losing streak and a loss Wednesday would leave the Braves with an 0-6 road trip against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Padres. San Diego is 5-2 as it concludes an eight-game homestand that began with executive chairman Ron Fowler calling the players "miserable failures" and was followed by the trade of starting pitcher James Shields to the Chicago White Sox.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Julio Teheran (1-6, 2.92 ERA) vs. Padres LH Drew Pomeranz (5-5, 2.22)

Teheran has dropped back-to-back starts after putting together a string of solid outings. Though he picked up just one victory in a seven-start span, he compiled a 1.17 ERA and gave up just 31 hits in a 46-inning stretch. Teheran is 1-2 with a 4.55 ERA in five career starts against the Padres and has experienced major difficulties with Yangervis Solarte (5-for-6, home run).

Pomeranz was superb in his last outing when he struck out eight while blanking Colorado on two hits over seven innings. It was the second time in three starts that he gave up two hits over seven shutout innings, also doing so against San Francisco on May 23. Pomeranz has excelled at Petco Park with a 3-1 record and 0.73 ERA and .128 batting average against in four home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Myers has multiple hits in four straight games and seven of the last nine and is 17-for-38 with three homers, four doubles, nine RBIs and nine runs scored during the stretch.

2. Atlanta RF Nick Markakis, who posted nine double-digit homer seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, has four total homers in 212 games and 820 at-bats since joining the Braves.

3. Norris is 10-for-27 with two homers and six RBIs over his last seven games to raise his average 29 points to .208.

Preview: Mets at Pirates

GAME: New York Mets (31-26) at Pittsburgh Pirates (32-26)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates were stuck in a 2-7 slump before a rainout on Monday and a doubleheader on Tuesday changed the momentum entirely. The Pirates have a chance to earn a sweep in the compressed three-game series when they give right-hander Jameson Taillon his major-league debut and welcome the New York Mets for the finale on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh earned twin 3-1 victories in the doubleheader and did just enough on offense to get past Steven Matz and Jacob deGrom while getting solid efforts from the back end of its own rotation – Jon Niese and Juan Nicasio. The Pirates will give Francisco Liriano an extra day of rest on Wednesday and line up the rest of the rotation following the doubleheader by promoting Taillon, who was the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2010 between Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. Taillon will be taking on a New York offense that totaled two runs in its last three games and has dropped seven of its last 10 contests. The Mets managed 10 runs in those seven losses and slugger Yoenis Cespedes went 0-for-7 in the doubleheader while dealing with a hip ailment.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 1.91 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (NA)

Syndergaard, who went 38th overall to the Toronto Blue Jays in that same 2010 draft, is already well-established in the majors and is quickly becoming the ace of a strong New York staff. The Texas native allowed two runs and struck out nine in seven innings to earn a win at Miami on Friday and has 90 strikeouts in 70 2/3 frames overall this season. Syndergaard made one start against Pittsburgh in his 2015 rookie campaign and allowed four runs – one earned – over six innings in a loss.

Taillon was on a fast track to the majors before Tommy John surgery and a second surgery to repair a hernia robbed him of the 2014 and 2015 campaigns. "I feel like I'm in a position to say I put in the work for it. I wasn't just given this," Taillon told reporters. "It's definitely sweet to be here." The 24-year-old earned his way to the majors by going 4-2 with a 2.04 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Pirates have won nine straight against the Mets.

2. New York SS Asdrubal Cabrera is 0-for-12 with five strikeouts in the last three games.

3. Pittsburgh LF Starling Marte (ankle) left the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader and did not play in the nightcap.

Preview: Angels at Yankees

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (26-32) at New York Yankees (28-30)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Carlos Beltran and Starlin Castro have gone the extra mile to spoil the first half of the Los Angeles Angels' most recent visit to the Bronx. With homers in each of the last two games, Beltran and Castro look to slug the New York Yankees to their 14th win in their last 17 home contests versus the Angels when the clubs continue their four-game set on Wednesday.

Beltran's three-run blast highlighted a 5-2 win in the series opener and his team-leading 15th homer accounted for his 1,000th career extra-base hit in Tuesday's 6-3 victory. The 39-year-old could be licking his chops versus Wednesday starter Jered Weaver, against whom he is 2-for-6 in his career with a pair of homers. Castro added two solo shots in the series and is 9-for-24 (.375) with three RBIs in his last six games for the Yankees, who are 4-2 in that span. Los Angeles' Kole Calhoun belted his fourth homer in nine outings on Tuesday and improved to 12-for-34 (.353) with 12 runs driven in that stretch heading into a date with starter Nathan Eovaldi, against whom he is 3-for-8 (.375) in his career.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN West (Los Angeles), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Jered Weaver (5-4, 5.18 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Nathan Eovaldi (6-2, 4.09)

Weaver recorded his second win in three outings on Friday despite allowing two solo homers in six innings of a 9-2 rout over Pittsburgh. The 33-year-old has been taken deep on nine occasions in his last five starts and 14 times in 11 contests this season. Weaver knows that story all too well as the veteran surrendered three homers in his last encounter with the Yankees and 22 in 15 career starts versus the club.

Eovaldi was fortunate to walk away with a no-decision on Friday despite yielding five runs in 5 1/3 innings versus Baltimore. The 26-year-old is carrying an eight-start unbeaten string into Wednesday's tilt versus Los Angeles, against which he owns a 2-1 career mark while allowing just one homer in 20 frames. Eovaldi has pitched well at home, winning each of his last three starts while permitting just five runs in 19 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York 1B Mark Teixeira told reporters that he is opting against surgery and plans to accept a series of cortisone treatments in a bid to play through the pain of torn cartilage in his right knee.

2. Los Angeles SS Gregorio Petit, who played with the Yankees last season, is 6-for-10 with four doubles in his last three games.

3. New York has launched 22 homers in its last 11 home contests.

Preview: Royals at Orioles

GAME: Kansas City Royals (30-28) at Baltimore Orioles (34-23)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Kansas City Royals are beginning to show some frustration during a six-game slide, and the Baltimore Orioles are not backing down from the fight. The fighting Orioles will try to wrap up a three-game sweep when they host the Royals in the series finale on Wednesday.

Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura upset Baltimore shortstop Manny Machado with some inside pitches in a second-inning at-bat on Tuesday and drilled him with a pitch in the next at-bat, leading the infielder to charge the mound and incite a benches-clearing brawl. Machado was ejected from the game and could be looking at a suspension, but the Orioles have plenty of power bats to cover the loss. Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis nailed back-to-back home runs directly after Ventura and Machado were tossed and Baltimore went on to grab a 9-1 victory – it’s sixth win in the last seven games. The Royals have scored one or no runs in each of the last five games and managed a total of eight during the six-game slide.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Edinson Volquez (5-5, 4.03 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Chris Tillman (7-1, 3.33)

Volquez has gone at least six innings in each of his last five starts but is coming off a loss at Cleveland on Friday. The Dominican Republic native was reached for five runs on seven hits – two homers – and four walks in 6 1/3 innings. Volquez is looking for his first career win in his fifth start against the Orioles and has given up a pair of home runs to Adam Jones (4-for-9) while struggling to retire Trumbo (2-for-3) and Matt Wieters (2-for-4, two doubles).

Tillman had a string of seven straight quality starts through May 24 but is having a little trouble keeping the ball in the park over his last two turns. The 28-year-old was reached for three homers in each of those two starts and allowed nine runs and 12 hits in 11 2/3 innings combined against Cleveland and the New York Yankees. Tillman started twice against Kansas City last season and went 0-1 while yielding eight runs and 13 hits in 11 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Trumbo has homered five times in the last six games and leads the majors with 20.

2. Royals DH Kendrys Morales went 3-for-3 on Tuesday after going 1-for-15 in his previous four games.

3. Kansas City SS and leadoff hitter Alcides Escobar is 2-for-25 over the last six contests.

Preview: Cardinals at Reds

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (30-28) at Cincinnati Reds (22-36)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Joey Votto's heroics have the Cincinnati Reds in position to register a rare series win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Votto's walk-off blast in the bottom of the ninth inning, coming after the Reds squandered a five-run lead in the series opener, lifted Cincinnati to its fifth victory in six games entering Wednesday's contest against the visiting Cardinals.

Adam Duvall continued his home run binge with his fourth shot in five games for the Reds, who have won only four of their last 21 series against St. Louis. Duvall has turned up the power over his last 15 games, going deep 10 times and driving in 22 runs in that span. Cardinals third baseman Jhonny Peralta, sidelined since undergoing thumb surgery in March, returned to the lineup Tuesday and had a pair of doubles and two RBIs in his season debut. St. Louis looks to even the series when they send left-hander Jaime Garcia to the mound to oppose struggling righty Alfredo Simon.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals LH Jaime García (4-5, 3.48 ERA) vs. Reds RH Alfredo Simón (2-5, 8.94)

Garcia lost for the third time in four starts despite giving up two runs and five hits over five innings at Milwaukee on June 1, marking the fifth time in nine starts he hasn't pitched beyond five innings. The 29-year-old Mexican had a strong performance in his previous turn, limiting Washington to two runs on seven hits over seven innings. Jay Bruce is 9-for-44 with 10 strikeouts versus Garcia, who owns a 10-4 record and 3.50 ERA against the Reds.

Simon needed plenty of offensive support to end a four-start losing streak after allowing four runs and serving up three homers in an 11-4 victory at Colorado on Thursday. Simon has allowed at least three runs in each appearance since his season debut, including three runs on four hits in one inning of relief against St. Louis on April 15. Matt Holliday is only 4-for-18 against Simon, who is 3-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 19 appearances (four starts) versus St. Louis.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds CF Billy Hamilton has a trio of three-hit games over his last eight contests.

2. Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter, the reigning NL Player of the Week, is 7-for-16 with three doubles and three RBIs during a four-game hitting streak.

3. The Reds optioned RHP Jon Moscot to Triple-A Louisville and recalled OF Steve Selsky.

Preview: Astros at Rangers

GAME: Houston Astros (28-32) at Texas Rangers (36-22)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 08 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers seemingly can do no wrong against Houston this season and attempt to defeat the visiting Astros for the ninth consecutive time on Wednesday. Texas won each of the first two contests of the four-game series in its last at-bat to remain unbeaten against its in-state rival and stretch its overall winning streak to a season-high five games.

The Rangers won the opener on Rougned Odor's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning and Ian Desmond belted a two-run, tiebreaking homer in the bottom of the eighth in Tuesday's 4-3 victory. Texas will try to continue its season dominance behind Yu Darvish, who is making his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery. The Astros have lost 12 straight visits to Arlington dating back to last season, and it doesn't help matters that the Rangers are an American League-best 23-9 at home this year. Houston's Jose Altuve went hitless in three at-bats Tuesday to see his 12-game hitting streak come to an end.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Doug Fister (5-3, 3.51 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yu Darvish (2-0, 3.38)

Fister has won four consecutive decisions, including his last outing against Oakland in which he scattered four hits over six scoreless innings. He has compiled a 2.45 ERA during a seven-start unbeaten streak and has allowed two runs or fewer five times during the stretch. Fister fell to 4-5 with a 5.18 ERA in 11 career starts against Texas on April 20, when he suffered the loss after giving up two runs and five hits in six frames.

Darvish has won his first two starts but looked sharper in his season debut versus Pittsburgh than he did in his follow-up outing against Seattle. He gave up one run and three hits in five innings against the Pirates before allowing three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 frames versus the Mariners. Darvish is 4-3 with a 3.54 ERA in nine career starts against the Astros and has struggled versus Colby Rasmus (7-for-15, one homer) while shutting down Altuve (3-for-20).

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers INF Jurickson Profar recorded two hits on Tuesday and has hit safely in all 11 games - going 19-for-50 - since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.

2. Houston RF George Springer is hitless in eight at-bats in the series and 0-for-12 over his last three games.

3. Desmond is 4-for-9 in the series and is batting .412 over his last 15 contests.

PREDICTION: Rangers 6, Astros 2
