Preview: Padres (32-34) at Athletics (27-39)
Game: 3
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: June 17, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres have had a different manager for the last three games, and each ended the same way: with a loss.

Perhaps a change in scenery can help them recover from a tumultuous homestand.

They'll hit the road Wednesday night as they continue their series with the Oakland Athletics.

The Padres (32-35) announced Tuesday that Pat Murphy would serve as interim manager for the rest of the season. Murphy has been with the franchise since 2010 when he was hired as special assistant to baseball operations. He has managed multiple Padres minor league clubs, most recently at Triple-A El Paso.

"Pat Murphy's 30 years of experience coaching and managing, and his success at every level, stood out to me as I came to this decision," general manager A.J. Preller said. "His leadership ability, his respect in the clubhouse and his familiarity with our system will make this transition a smooth one for our players and coaching staff."

Bud Black was fired before Monday's 9-1 loss to Oakland, with bench coach Dave Roberts serving as interim manager. San Diego's luck didn't change Tuesday in its first game under Murphy, losing 6-5 to the Athletics (28-39). Eric Sogard, who was coached by Murphy at Arizona State, drove in the winning run in the ninth against Craig Kimbrel.

"A kid that I've known for a lot of years," Murphy said. "That stings a little bit to be honest with you."

The five runs were as many as the Padres totaled in their three previous games, though they were 1 for 5 with runners in scoring position and struck out 12 times. They're 15 for 83 (.181) with runners in scoring position while dropping seven of 10, and their 567 strikeouts are the third-most in baseball.

Oakland has averaged 5.6 runs while winning five of seven and hopes to provide some support for Jesse Chavez (2-6, 2.64 ERA), who is 1-4 in his last seven starts despite posting five quality outings. He didn't receive a decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels after giving up three runs over seven innings before the bullpen cost him the victory.

The four runs of support were a season high for Chavez, whose 1.76 run-support average is the worst in the majors. No pitcher has finished a year with a lower mark since 1969, when Sonny Siebert averaged 1.29 runs of support from Cleveland and Boston.

"(It's) either a lack of run support or we give it up after he comes out," manager Bob Melvin told MLB's official website.

Chavez has never started against the Padres, though he owns a 5.06 ERA over six appearances, last facing them in 2010.

Odrisamer Despaigne (3-4, 4.38) could use some more offense behind him as well. He's had zero run support in six of his last seven starts, including Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander gave up two runs over 6 1-3 innings, but San Diego didn't score until after he exited in a 4-3 loss. It was the fourth time in five starts he's pitched at least six innings while giving up two runs or fewer.

The Athletics have won 31 of their last 41 at home in interleague play.

Preview: Rangers (34-30) at Dodgers (37-27)
Game: 3
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
Date: June 17, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Clayton Kershaw grew up a fan of the Texas Rangers, and now he'll get to face them for the first time.

After the Los Angeles Dodgers dropped the first half of this four-game series on the road, Kershaw goes for a fourth straight home win Wednesday night against the Rangers.

A native of Dallas, Kershaw (5-3, 3.21 ERA) claims his favorite Ranger was Will Clark, the former first baseman who also wore No. 22.

Kershaw's homecoming won't be remembered fondly, as Los Angeles (37-28) lost both games and gave up a walkoff homer to Robinson Chirinos in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat.

Kershaw is well aware that the Rangers (35-30) have hit 29 homers and averaged 5.2 runs during a 19-7 stretch that's turned around their season.

"Yeah, good team. They're swinging the bats really, really well right now," Kershaw told MLB's official website. "Fortunately, they won't have the DH in L.A. so they're going to have to make a decision there."

Losing the designated hitter in the NL park will likely put Mitch Moreland or Prince Fielder on the bench. Moreland could be moved to the outfield, as he played two games in left last season, leaving Fielder at first base.

Texas will need all the offense it can muster against Kershaw, as the left-hander has gone 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 28 2-3 innings over his last four starts. That includes striking out 21 while tossing 15 scoreless innings in a pair of home wins.

He's posted a 1.25 ERA while winning three straight starts at Dodger Stadium, giving him a 14-2 record and 1.57 mark in his last 18 at home.

He struggled somewhat in a 4-3 win at San Diego on Friday, throwing 73 of his 117 pitches for strikes and walking three over 6 2-3 innings of one-run ball. He struck out 11 but didn't get the decision.

"It seemed like it was a battle for him, command-wise with the fastball," manager Don Mattingly said. "But it shows you just what kind of a competitor he is that he continues to fight and battle the whole game."

The Dodgers, having batted .118 with runners in scoring position while losing three of four, open a five-game homestand that includes a weekend series with San Francisco.

The Rangers are looking to win a sixth straight game with Wandy Rodriguez (3-2, 3.03) on the mound. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in that stretch, yielding two runs in 13 2-3 innings over his last two starts.

Rodriguez loaded the bases and gave up a run in the first inning Friday, then responded by retiring 18 straight before leaving with two outs in the seventh. He threw a season-high 122 pitches and didn't get a decision in a 6-2 win over Minnesota.

"He does that every time out," Moreland told MLB's official website of Rodriguez's quick pace on the mound. "He gets the ball, he gets on the rubber and he gets ready to throw the next one. It's nice to play defense behind a guy like that and a guy who's going after each hitter."

Rodriguez has posted a 1.49 ERA while going 3-3 in six starts at Dodger Stadium, the latest coming while with Houston in 2011.

He'll get his first matchup with Yasiel Puig, who's 0 for 8 in two games after going 13 for 27 in his first seven following his return from a left hamstring strain.

NYY / Miami UNDER 8

Analysis: I see some value in this under here for tonight..First off the Marlins have now played the Yanks twice in Miami..Now they make a return trip back to New York for a two game set...Bit of travel for both teams here as they make the trek up the entire east coast...Pineda is coming off one of his worst starts of the year as he takes the mound tonight...His ERA is solid at 3.74 and his WHIP is decnt at 1.25....Pineda has the goods to limit the bats of the marlins and the way the marlins have been hitting the ball i'm not to worried they will explode here on the road tonight....Miami has won 4 of 5, but has been rather limited in run support...I have to take the 6,5,4 runs they just scored agains tthe Rockies with a grain of salt because the pitching for Colorado isn't all that great..This Yanks rotation is much better and we saw the Marlins only managed two runs to open up this series...Marlins will send young stud hurler Urena to the mound..Now this kid has what it takes to get guys out....He has a nice mix up of pitches and has had success this year on the mound..he had a few rough outings, but he has been solid overall...This will be his 4th start overall and he is coming off a win in which he pitched 6 full inning snand gave up only 6 hits and 1ER...That 1ER was a solo shot..So he did his best to limit the bats of a hot hitting Rockies team..That speaks volumes to me...Not only did he limit them last game, but he played them twice in a row and he did even better the first time as he went 6 full again and only gave up 3 hits and 1ER...So he has made his mark here in Miami and looks to be comfortable...Will this Yankees lineup scare him though?...I think he will be up for the challenge and will want to produce a good outing in the big lights of Yankee stadium...The Yankees overall right now are ii a bit of a slump with wins..They have now dropped 4 out of 5 and need to get the bats rolling here..Still i don;t like the travel situation for either team...I also like the fact that Arod was limited with his bats playing the NL schedule as a DH...Pineda should look to get back on track here and Urena may go out to prove his worth here in a big sport Vs. the Yanks..These lineups can produce runs but this line at 8 seems very fair..I'll grab the under 8 here for tonight's Bonus Play.

Holy $hit betting stat of the day: Just how bad are the Red Sox on the road?
By Andrew Caley

The Boston Red Sox travel to Atlanta to face the Braves Wednesday hoping their road woes come to an end, having lost 10 of their previous 11 ball games away from Fenway Park.

The Red Sox are scoring a dismal 3.36 runs per game (108 runs in 32 games) away from home in 2015 and have the majors’ second worst team batting average in away games at .224.

Such futility on the road is an aiding factor in the Red Sox’s terrible performance for bettors. The BoSox head into Wednesday’s action -$1732 on the season, third-worst in MLB in front of the Oakland A’s (-$1736) and Philadelphia Phillies (-$1841).

Boston is currently a +115 dog and turns to right-hander Joe Kelly (2-4, 5.45 ERA), while the Braves(-125) will counter with lefty Alex Wood (4-4, 3.56 ERA) Wednesday evening.
