BOS vs BAL

5* MLB Free Pick Over

The Boston Red Sox are looking to complete a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards Wednesday night. The Red Sox have outscored the Orioles 13-9 over the first two games of the series, but I think the Orioles will put up a fight in a high-scoring contest here in the series finale.

Joe Kelly (2-0, 6.30 ERA) will take the ball for the Red Sox, and he conceded up five runs on nine hits and three walks with a pair of homers in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision against Toronto his last time out. Kelly earned a win over Baltimore on April 13, yielding just two runs despite giving up seven hits and five walks in five innings and might not be so lucky here. He has a 5.10 ERA in six starts against Baltimore.

The Orioles turn to Mike Wright (2-3, 5.05) who surrendered four runs in five innings at Boston in his season debut. Wright struggled at Cleveland his last outing, giving up three runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 6-4 win.

Boston leads the major leagues in runs scored averaging 5.92 runs per game and its .294 batting average is also the best mark. Over is 4-1-1 in Wright's last six home starts. Over is 4-1-1 in Kelly's last six road starts.

Tigers vs Angels

Bonus Play Los Angeles Angels

I'm backing the LA Angels on Wednesday. Mike Scioscia's squad has dominated the Tigers, winning 11 of the last 12 meetings, after a dramatic 11-9 win last night. I expect the Halos to make it 12 of 13. Matt Shoemaker has held Tiger hitters to 5 hits in 44 combined at-bats against him. Meanwhile, the Angels have averaged 5.79 rpg in their last 19 games as the bats have truly heated-up. The Angels will face Michael Fullmer, who'll make his 7th start in his MLB career. Fullmer has looked decent in his last two starts, but enters Anaheim with a 4.67 road ERA, to go along with a 1.56 WHIP, and a .291 BAA. Eventually, the hot Angel bats will step-in against the Tigers' bullpen, carrying MLB's 28th worst ERA. Back to Shoemaker for a moment, the right-hander has allowed just one earned run and 13 base runners in three starts against the Tigers, spanning 19 2/3 IP. He's had his best 2016 "stuff" over his last two starts, holding the Astros & Orioles to a combined two earned runs and 10 hits in 15 2/3 IP, while striking out 23 batters without issuing a single walk. We'll look for the Halo bats and Shoemaker to remain hot, and we'll back the Angels as they look to make it 4-0 against Detroit when Shoemaker toes the rubber. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

NYY vs TOR

1* Bonus Play UNDER Yanks/Jays

The visitors hand the ball to Masahiro Tanaka (3-0, 2.89 ERA) who would throw seven shutout innings in a 4-1 win over the Rays on Friday, scattering two hits and walking none in the dominant performance. Tanaka has now thrown back-to-back gems and has been particularly impressive on the road this year, going 2-0 with a tiny 1.34 ERA. The home side counters with Aaron Sanchez (4-1, 3.29) who gave up three earned runs off five hits, walking two and striking out six over six innings in a no-decision vs. the hard-hitting Red Sox on Friday. Sanchez has become the leader of the Jays’ rotation and note that he’s 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA in all night games this year. With these two quality starters going head-to-head on Wednesay night, the under is definitely worthy of a second look.

Yankees vs Blue Jays

Play - NY Yankees w/Tanaka

Edges - Yankees: Hiroshima Tanaka 6-2 career team starts in this series, including 3-0 here. Orioles: Aaron Sanchez 4.88 ERA home this season as opposed to 2.38 ERA away. With the Pinstripes having struggled against southpaws (6-12) this season, but 18-14 versus righties, we recommend a 1* play on the NY Yankees. Thank you and good luck as always.

Preview: Rangers at Indians

Current Conditions - Cleveland

M/SUNNY 68 °F
Wind: SW 5
5-Day Forecast GAME: Texas Rangers (31-21) at Cleveland Indians (26-24)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 01 - 6:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers are on a roll with four straight victories to stay just ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. The Rangers will try to hold onto their slim lead and earn a three-game sweep when they visit the Cleveland Indians for the series finale on Wednesday.

Jurickson Profar was the top prospect in baseball a few years ago but had the better part of two seasons lost to shoulder injuries. Rougned Odor’s suspension for punching Toronto’s Jose Bautista is giving Profar another chance in the majors, and the 23-year-old is making the most of the opportunity with eight hits in five games – including a home run on Tuesday – while batting out of the leadoff spot. Cleveland’s staff is struggling to avoid crooked numbers during a three-game slide that has seen it yield a total of 22 runs. That staff is expected to get Carlos Carrasco (hamstring) back on Thursday but will try to get by with Trevor Bauer taking the start opposite Cole Hamels on Wednesday.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (5-1, 3.34 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (3-2, 4.34)

Hamels is coming off his first loss of the season and was ripped for six runs – five earned – on eight hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh on Friday. The 32-year-old is having some trouble keeping the ball in the park of late with eight home runs allowed in his last four outings. Hamels yielded 11 runs and 14 hits in 10 total innings against Cleveland in his career but has not faced the Indians since moving to the American League last season.

Bauer is riding a three-start winless streak despite a pair of quality starts in that span. The UCLA product allowed three runs on nine hits and a pair of walks against Baltimore on Friday and was held out of the decision in a game Cleveland went on to lose 6-4. Bauer is making his third career start against the Rangers and is looking for his first decision after allowing a total of seven runs and 11 hits in 13 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers OF Ian Desmond recorded multiple hits in six of the last nine games.

2. Cleveland RF Lonnie Chisenhall is 4-for-5 with a home run in the series.

3. Texas C Bryan Holaday homered on Tuesday and has driven in a run in each of his last three starts.

PREDICTION: Rangers 7, Indians 4

Preview: Red Sox at Orioles

Current Conditions - Baltimore

CLOUDY 69 °F
Wind: N 3
5-Day Forecast GAME: Boston Red Sox (32-20) at Baltimore Orioles (28-22)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 01 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The success of the Boston Red Sox offense has been attributed to the ageless production of David Ortiz and the long hitting streaks enjoyed by Jackie Bradley Jr. and Xander Bogaerts, but everyone in the lineup is capable of putting up big numbers. Mookie Betts will try to follow up his career day at the plate when the Red Sox visit the Baltimore Orioles in the third of a four-game series on Wednesday.

Betts used all three fields to bash three home runs out of the leadoff spot on Tuesday, belting a solo blast to center in the first, a three-run shot to left in the second and another solo shot to right in the seventh to spark Boston to a 6-2 win. The 23-year-old got off to a slow start this season but recorded multiple hits in each of the last three games – all wins – and his 12 home runs are the most among leadoff hitters in the majors. The Orioles have dropped seven of their last nine games to fall three games behind the Red Sox in the American League East and totaled four runs in the first two games of the series. The Nos. 4-7 hitters in the Baltimore lineup combined to go 0-for-16 with seven strikeouts in Tuesday’s setback.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Joe Kelly (2-0, 6.30 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Mike Wright (2-3, 5.05)

Kelly dominated in his first start off the disabled list, taking a no-hitter in the seventh inning against Cleveland on May 21, but was not quite as strong in his second outing. The California native struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings but was ripped for five runs on nine hits – two home runs – and three walks in a no decision at Toronto on Friday. Kelly earned a win over Baltimore on April 13, yielding two runs on seven hits and five walks in five innings.

Wright failed to make it through six innings in either of his last two turns but was bailed out by the offense and avoided a loss in both. The 26-year-old allowed three runs on six hits and a pair of walks in 4 2/3 innings at Cleveland on Friday in a game the Orioles went on to win 6-4. Wright made his season debut at Boston on April 12 and came away with a win despite surrendering four runs in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Bogaerts singled on Tuesday to push his hitting streak to 24 straight games.

2. Baltimore C Caleb Joseph had surgery Monday to repair a testicular injury and was placed on the 15-day DL.

3. Boston 1B prospect Sam Travis will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL and should be back for spring training.

Preview: Tigers at Angels

Current Conditions - Anaheim

CLOUDY 62 °F
Wind: CLM 0
5-Day Forecast GAME: Detroit Tigers (24-27) at Los Angeles Angels (24-28)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 01 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers are hoping Michael Fulmer can help them record a rare victory in Anaheim as the rookie takes the mound in Wednesday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. The Tigers have lost 17 of their last 19 games in Anaheim against the Angels, who belted four homers in Tuesday’s 11-9 victory.

The Tigers have dropped four in a row and need more production from struggling left fielder Justin Upton, who homered Tuesday but is batting .217 with a league-leading 72 strikeouts. “He’s a much better hitter than he's shown, clearly,” manager Brad Ausmus told MLB.com. “I mean, we're talking about nine years this guy was in the big leagues with good numbers. He’s never struggled like this. It might take time, but we're going to fix this.” Upton is hoping to follow the lead of Angels first baseman C.J. Cron, who was hitting .203 at the end of April but homered twice Tuesday and has 21 RBI in his last 26 games while upping his average to .250. The Angels have averaged five runs during their last 33 games and received a boost in their bullpen Tuesday as closer Huston Street returned from the disabled list and retired the Tigers in order in the ninth for the victory.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (4-1, 3.97 ERA) vs. Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (3-5, 5.96)

Fulmer won his second straight start Friday at Oakland, throwing 7 2/3 shutout innings with three hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. The 23-year-old rookie has strengthened his case to stick in the rotation after struggling in his first four starts. “I feel so much more comfortable. I just trust everything,” Fulmer told reporters. “It feels good to get big-league hitters out, any way I can. And the defense is doing great. I’m hoping to just keep moving forward.”

Shoemaker turned in another strong outing Friday by holding Houston to two runs while striking out 11 batters over career-high 8 1/3 innings. “Hopefully he’s turned the corner on some things,” manager Mike Scioscia told reporters. “We’re not surprised at all with the last two games and how he’s pitched. We were surprised by some of the inconsistencies last year and early this year.” The Michigan native is 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit CF Cameron Maybin (wrist) was removed from Tuesday’s game as a precaution but should be available for Wednesday’s contest.

2. Angels SS Cliff Pennington exited Tuesday’s game with a strained left hamstring and is expected to be placed on the disabled list.

3. Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler is hitting .341 with six home runs and 13 RBI over his last 22 games.

Preview: Nationals at Phillies

Current Conditions - Philadelphia

CLOUDY 72 °F
Wind: NNW 3
5-Day Forecast
GAME: Washington Nationals (32-21) at Philadelphia Phillies (26-26)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 01 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Max Scherzer is unbeaten in six starts against Philadelphia since his trade to the National League and will look to complete a three-game sweep for the visiting Washington Nationals in Wednesday's series finale against the skidding Phillies. The Nationals belted four home runs in Tuesday's 5-1 win, sending Philadelphia to its fifth straight defeat.

Scherzer is 4-0 with a 1.88 ERA against the Phillies since joining the Nationals, who have won three in a row despite the absence of Bryce Harper on Tuesday due to a right knee contusion. Daniel Murphy homered in his 26th multi-hit performance of the season to boost his batting average to .397 entering June. Philadelphia, the lowest-scoring team in the majors, has pushed across only nine runs during its slide to drop back to the .500 mark for the first time since April 26. Adam Morgan, who owns a 6.67 ERA, will make his first start against Washington.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (5-4, 4.05 ERA) vs. Phillies LH Adam Morgan (1-3, 6.67)

Although Scherzer allowed only three hits in his last outing, one was a grand slam in a 6-2 setback against St. Louis as he continued a trend of alternating wins and losses over his last six starts. Scherzer won at Philadelphia on April 16 with seven innings of one-run ball while settling for a no-decision 10 days later versus the Phillies after giving up three runs in six frames. Ryan Howard and Maikel Franco are a combined 2-for-30 against Scherzer.

Morgan could be pitching his way out of the rotation as he was tagged for six runs and eight hits, including three homers, in four-plus innings against the Chicago Cubs last time out. It was the third consecutive losing start for the 26-year-old Morgan, who has a total of 11 strikeouts in his last five turns after recording seven in his season debut. Morgan is 0-2 with a bloated 7.36 ERA in three starts this season at Citizens Bank Park.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals SS Danny Espinosa has homered three times in his last six games.

2. Franco is 1-for-15 over his last four contests.

3. Nationals INF Stephen Drew's inside-the-park homer was the team's eighth pinch-hit shot - three more than it recorded in 2015.

Preview: Yankees at Blue Jays

Current Conditions - Toronto

M/SUNNY 70 °F
Wind: WSW 12
5-Day Forecast GAME: New York Yankees (24-27) at Toronto Blue Jays (28-26)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 01 - 7:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Pitching away from home has not fazed right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, who will try to prevent a three-game sweep when the New York Yankees visit the Toronto Blue Jays in Wednesday night's series finale. Toronto is 6-2 against the Yankees this season and has won five straight series versus New York for the first time since 1992-93.

Tanaka is 2-0 record with a 1.34 ERA in five road starts and has yielded one run over 22 innings in his last three away from home. The Yankees fell to 2-3 on their 10-game road trip following Tuesday's 4-1 setback and have managed five runs and 12 hits over their past three games. Kevin Pillar and Darwin Barney each made sensational catches while combining to drive in all three runs in a decisive seventh-inning rally as the Blue Jays won for the sixth time in seven games. Toronto sends Aaron Sanchez to the mound to oppose Tanaka in the series finale.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, YES (New York), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (3-0, 2.89 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Aarón Sánchez (4-1, 3.29)

Tanaka was dominant last time out at Tampa Bay, permitting only a pair of hits over seven scoreless innings to win his second start in a row. The 27-year-old also went seven stellar innings in his previous outing, giving up one run on five hits to win at Oakland. Edwin Encarnacion is 7-for-16 with a homer and two doubles against Tanaka, who is 5-2 with a 2.37 ERA versus the Blue Jays after five-innings of two-run ball in a no-decision in April.

Sanchez settled for a no-decision against Boston on Friday, yielding four runs (three earned) on five hits over 6 2/3 innings for his eighth quality start. Sanchez, who is 3-0 during a six-start unbeaten streak, also did not factor in the decision against the Yankees on April 12 after allowing one earned run on three hits over six innings. The 23-year-old remains in search of his first win at home -- he's 0-1 with a 4.88 ERA at Rogers Centre.

WALK-OFFS

1. Barney is 6-for-14 during a four-game hitting streak.

2. Yankees 2B Dustin Ackley will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

3. The Blue Jays acquired RHP Jason Grilli, a former All-Star closer, from Atlanta on Tuesday.

Preview: Giants at Braves

Current Conditions - Atlanta

SUNNY 72 °F
Wind: CLM 0
5-Day Forecast GAME: San Francisco Giants (33-21) at Atlanta Braves (15-36)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, June 01 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Denard Span can be a game changer from the leadoff spot when healthy and the Giants center fielder is finding his stride as May turns to June. Span and San Francisco play the third contest of a four-game set Wednesday against the host Atlanta Braves, one night after Span collected three hits and two RBIs in a 4-0 victory to raise his average to .435 in his past six games.

Span missed 101 games last season while playing with Washington but has appeared in 51 of San Francisco’s 54 contests, hitting .328 in his past 17 games to help the Giants win for the 16th time in their past 19 contests. Atlanta had won three of its previous four games before collecting only one hit Tuesday, falling to 5-22 at home while being outscored 131-82. The Braves had scored 19 runs in their past four games before Tuesday’s shutout, the 31st time in 51 games Atlanta has scored three runs or fewer. Catcher Tyler Flowers recorded the Braves' hit Tuesday with a fifth-inning single and is hitting .316 in his past 12 games with five extra-base hits (three doubles, two home runs).

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Albert Suarez (1-1, 2.25 ERA) vs. Braves RH Williams Perez (2-1, 3.71)

San Francisco benefited greatly from Jake Peavy’s seven innings of one-hit pitching Tuesday, and confirmed afterward that Suarez will get his first major-league start in the third game of the series. Suarez has made five appearances out of the Giants’ bullpen, giving up three runs on 10 hits in 12 innings. He pitched five innings out of the bullpen Friday at Colorado, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts, and went six innings in each of his three starts for Triple-A Sacramento before making his big-league debut May 8.

Much as he did in his first few starts as a rookie in 2015, Perez has pitched well in further bolstering his claim to a rotation spot. He held Miami to two runs on seven hits in six innings Friday, the fourth time in his past five starts the 25-year-old has limited opponents to two earned runs or fewer. Perez, who went 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts against San Francisco last season, has a 2.86 ERA in four home starts while holding opponents to a .187 batting average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta traded RHP Jason Grilli to Toronto before Tuesday’s game for minor-league RHP Sean Ratcliffe. Grilli posted a 5.29 ERA in 21 appearances.

2. San Francisco 3B Matt Duffy did not start Tuesday, one day after being hit with a pitch on the left wrist. Duffy hit a RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth as a pinch hitter and played the final two innings at third base.

3. The Giants have won six of their past eight games in Atlanta.

PREDICTION: Giants 4, Braves 2
