I'm in the process of moving to San Diego and have some questions about Caliente in TJ. Let me know if youve read this and I'll fire away.

Caliente is a pain in the ass to get to. Why bother when you can bet in the comfort of your home?

Because now the only thing that I'd be betting on is boxing so I'll be doing one and done bets but theyre usually for some big money. Why is Caliente so hard to get to?

First of all, unless you live down south by the border, it's a bit of a trek. More importantly, most people who go to TJ and Caliente park on the US side of the border and walk to the sportsbook. If you drive ac**** the border you are risking dealing with the ruthless drivers in TJ with no insurance. It is a decent sized walk to the sportsbook. THen you have to walk back and deal with the customs inspection and its line that doesn't move. I used to go down there before the internet gambling boom, but now i see it as a huge inconvenience. However, with what you have in mind to do, it might be worth your trouble.

Thanx for the info. Maybe it is just easier to hop a plane to Vegas. Lets say I made like a 10k bet and won. How are they with payouts?

Almly,

sorry I didn't see your post sooner, but you got all good answers from my SD breathren. 3-Peet....I'm an Aztec alum too ('92).

I would not play 10k in Caliente... I would not play 1k in Caliente. If I'm going to bet 10k I'd go to Vegas and make a "players" week-end of it. I wouldn't even go to TJ with 1k in my pocket because even the phucking cops will steal from you. (A guy just got robbed by cops coming back from caliente, if I find the link from the local rag I'll post it)

I used to go down there every weekend but I have not been to Caliente in ten years. I will say I loved going down there Saturday mornings, hung-over, ordering the best chorizo and eggs in the world, and watching games with other college football fans. Caliente is clean, has a couple of good rooms, and I've never heard of anyone getting stiffed down there, but I do know if it is a big bet you could get paid (slowly) in 20's. It is not that far of a walk (15 minutes), and you will definitely get ac**** the border faster than driving.

Back when I was going to Caliente I was in college (or just out) so $100 was a big bet back then. Even so, I always felt like I was dealing with the Mexican Mafia.

I'd go down again for the chorizo, but the most I'll bet down there is $100 and the most I'd carry on me is $500.

If you have never been, you should at least go check it out for yourself. You will not have any problems if you watch your back, and even better if you speak spanish (or have a spanish speaking friend).

Just read whoremoan's post....he is saying that from central SD (downtown or northward) it is at least a 20 minute drive to the border, another 10 minutes parking, another 15 minutes walking there. It's not hard to get there, it's just time consuming and a bit of a hassle.

Will add since you probably know in advance the boxing matches you are betting, you can get round-trip tix to LV on Southwest for $85.

All good points by WC and WHorman. But they do pay. They do not have problems with high bets. I know a well off lawyer in Mexico that won 20k on the Orangemen last NCAA hoops championship. All he had to do was speak to the manager of the joint, and he got approved. Then they paid him, and gave him a comp meal at a great restaurant near by.

Just to add my 2 cents. I probably wouldn't play 10k @ Caliente. Like the others said, take that action either to Reno or Vegas and fly in for the weekend. That action @ Caliente is simply too risky because of the corruption with the cops. Hell the Caliente tellers might even tip the Federali's you won that much as soon as you walked out the door.

As far as the positives,
-They do pay
-Play nothing more than $500 if you wanna feel safe with your payout if you win your bets. There's tons of mexican mafioso's and Cali horse guys dropping that hourly/daily when playing the horses.
-Accessability is easy. I used to drive all the way in and park right in the Caliente parking lot. I mean the sportsbook is only 30 seconds away after the border. Something like 1/8th a mile. Screw parking on the stateside and walking ac****. If your gonna be there for less than 30 minutes, I'd feel comfortable doing it regularly.

Good luck on you play.

Well thanx for all of the info guys, I appreciate it. I guess from the sound of it coming back ac**** the border would be too big of a pain. I guess I'll just stick with Vegas.
