is a regular joe soap like you and me, living and working in Merseyside. He walked into his local bookies in the summer of '98 with his 12 year year old nephew (Wayne) and asked for odds that this kid would play for England in the World Cup 2006.

The bookie offered him 250-1 which he accepted with a 200GBP wager.

Yesterdays injury cost him a certain 50,000GBP pay out.

Rooney may still only end up missing a game or two in the World Cup.

Rooney just needs to play. If he plays one minute of one game my understanding is the uncle gets paid. Word from Manchester is a broken foot which should/could not heal before the first week of July if England are still playing by then.

Man, that sucks. Would' ve been a nice payout.

Rooney is out. I wish not, but he's out. Fergie won't let him play unless he's fit.

FIFA gave them a delay until shortly before the WC to make a decision on him.

Those books sometimes pay out early when something is a foregone conclusion, he may have already cashed that ticket. One house paid out on Chelsea to win the EPL back in November or December.

Bookies paid out on Arsenal to win league famously a few years ago and they got pipped by United so they had to pay out twice !!!

Heard about that. Can't believe they pay out early, not sure what incentive they have to do so.

I have it from a good source that only cost them £18.000. Fairly cheap for the Publicity they got. :drink:

Exactly it was a PR move that could have cost them nothing. In the end it backfired but I guess it was worth it. A 30 second ad this summer will cost them $1m.

I can't imagine only 18k worth of winning bets were paid out. Maybe I am wrong, but that seems really low.

More like 18m

that is more realistic and a hell of a lot more expensive. not sure 18mm loss was worth the press they got.
