No doubt that many of you have noticed that there have been a number of "live conference home underdogs" that have won outright in the last few weeks. These included upsets of Kansas by Texas Tech, Kentucky by South Carolina, North Carolina by Duke, Duke by Maryland, Cincinnati by Depaul, Washington by Oregon State and Boston College by Notre Dame, although the latter was a slight favorite, just to name a few. Also, many of these dogs have covered but not won. At this time of year, as teams attempt to bolster their resume for the big dance, it is not uncommon to see these types of upsets. Personally, in all sports, I have considered this the strongest betting position to be in as you have a team that has the capability of winning the game, home court advantage, emotion, and desire to take down the powerhouse. Not all conference home dogs have the ability to win outright or even cover the spread, but when reviewing the card for each day, look carefully at each conference and try to determine if a particular game and team presents this situation. If you can consistently spot these types of plays, you will be rewarded nicely. Best of luck to everyone.

OMT,

Great post. Could not agree with you more about this. Homecourt advantage seems to be bigger in college basketball than in any other sport. You can just go down the teams and you see these teams with a .500 or a little better record on the road, but undefeated or 1 loss home records. A perfect example was tonight in the South Carolina/Kentucky game. South Carolina was a terrible 1-6 on the road, however a great 11-2 at home. Just check out all the teams and you will see this is extremely common. Home teams in general have been money to me lately, either as dogs or slight favorites. The homecourt is truly special in college. Iowa State is another great example, 2-6 on the road but 11-2 at home. Once again, great post.

You're giving away trade secrets again OMT..just kidding.

Even more strong when on major networks on weekends, or ESPN on weeknights.

TV Dogs(especially home variety) have been kicking b@tt the last 10 days!

Great post and insight, kindred soul! College sports are the BEST to cap and make money. Ted, I am thinking of taking a side trip to LA before the Bash in august. I would like to finally meet Gary Olshan after talking to him all of these years. LT

If ODU wasn't such a well coached and disciplined team, I'd follow Ted's advice. However, OLD DOMINION has proven over and over again that they are the cream of the crop in this league....

I suspect that ODU will WN tonight away from HOME, but it won't be easy...

Yes. Marquette would fit the criteria as a "Live Conference Home Dog". Doesn't mean it will win as nothing is guaranteed, but the spot is live.

OMT- Good call last night on NC State. I bet it, but didn't see your post until late last night. It seemed like such an obvious play to me. Do you think it was a bad line, or do you think they got equal action on both sides?

Illini:

It was not a bad line, but rather a line somewhat influenced by the recent play of Maryland. I watched the line movement most of the day and believe there was nearly equal action on both sides as the number hovered and stayed for the most part at 2.5 all day. There did seem to be an ever so slight lean towards North Carolina State.
