A Virginia family reportedly stumbled upon nearly $1 million in cold hard cash lying in the middle of the road.

Emily Schantz, of Caroline County, told a local CBS affiliate that she was driving with her family Saturday when she ran over what they initially thought to be bags of trash on the road.

The family stopped and threw the bag — along with another one about 15 feet away — into the back of their pickup truck.

It wasn’t until closer inspection at home did the family realize they had motored away with the incredible amount of cash in tow.

“Inside of the bag, there were plastic baggies and they were addressed with something that said ‘cash vault,'” Schantz said.

The family said they rang the local deputies after making their discovery.

“For someone so honest and willing to give that almost a million dollars back, it’s exceptional on their part,” Maj. Scott Moser told the outlet.

It’s not clear how all that cash ended up on the road. Authorities are still investigating, but the deputies believe the mailbags full of cash belonged to the postal service and were intended to be dropped off at a bank.

Schantz said she was simply doing what was right.

“Do the right thing and return it,” she said. “Because it didn’t belong to us.”

It was always my dream to find a bag of cash like that! After careful thought and planning this is what I would do, let me know if you would be able to bust me. hopefully I am alone, no witnesses, family included. Understand route taken and see how many cameras would of got you on tape in a different vehicle. hide cash, must show absolute discipline of not telling anyone including family. Need help from here.

Agree you would have to be alone, not even family members, to even consider keeping it

I could be wrong but I am guessing if you by anything worth a significant amount of money it is possible the lost cash could be tracked by the serial numbers. Not sure what they would charge you for if they found out you had it but they would find something. Might not even know you found it and might assume you stole it. But if I was going to take the risk I would have to make sure it was out in the middle of nowhere when I found it. Of course that is probably the only way you would find it. If it was lost in the city or something it would be caught right away and even if it wasn't you would have cameras everywhere so keeping it would be extremely risky.

You’d have to sit on it for awhile. Let the hype die down, as when it comes out missing they will be looking at cameras and what not of cars and people in the area that may have passed that route. Hopefully license plate images aren’t very clear.

It’s 1mil, they are going to look for it.

Then I’d take a a road trip around the US to large cash handling facilities. Race tracks, Casinos, bars, beaches and slowly “wash” the money. You might get lucky and win and little at casinos and what not, but expect to lose around 20% washing it.

Don’t get greedy and stupid at the casinos. Small buy ins and transactions. It may take a couple years to completely clean the cash. But think it though and DO NOt raise any red flags. Lol

And most important point, don’t tell anyone. I sure as shit wouldn’t wash any within a 500 mile radius where I found it.

If the FBI really wanted to find you, they would check the cell towers nearby to see if your cell phone pinged off any of them. If they could isolate you as a suspect, they may be able to access the GPS in your phone to see if that places you at the scene of the "bag of cash" near the time it disappeared. If they can do all of that, maybe they can get a search warrant for your house, office, car, etc. Be careful!
