According to the Continues Employment Survey recently published by the National Institute of Census and Statistics (Spanish acronym: INEC), the unemployed population was estimated in 294 thousand people in the last trimester of 2018, an increase of 89 thousand people in comparison to the same period of 2017.
The unemployment rate increased in 2.7 points and reached 12% with respect to the fourth trimester of 2017. In the case of men, the rate went up 2.4 points reaching 10% while in women the increase was of 2.6 point reaching 14.9%.
“During this period there was an accelerated growth of the unoccupied population -more than double- in comparison to the rise of occupied population, which reflected in a significant rise on unemployment”.
There are close to 222 thousand unoccupied people in the urban area and 72 thousand in the rural sites, 12.1% in the urban zone and 11.4% for the rural area.
When it comes to underemployment, people that work less than 40 hours a week, want and are available to work more hours, there was also an inter-annual increase of 1 percentual point, in comparison to the same period of the previous year, reaching 9%. Women have an unemployment rate of 12.7% while men only 6.7%.
