UFC 101 Betting - Breaking Down the Main Events
UFC 101 odds take top priority in MMA circles now that Affliction is off. Who has the edge in the main events? Let's make some picks.
BJ Penn (13-5-1) vs Kenny Florian (13-3) - Lightweight Championship
Offshore sportsbook odds: Penn -220, +180
PENN WILL WIN IF: He stays calm and takes the fight to the ground. Kenny Florian has great Jiu-Jitsu, but Penn's is off the charts. He can contort his ridiculously flexible body in unimaginable ways to set up various submissions -- especially chokes like the rear-naked and triangle. Once his limbs are locked in, his technique is too good to overcome.
FLORIAN WILL WIN IF: He survives on the ground and keeps the fight standing. He's a dangerous striker; his power isn't all that impressive but he does solid damage with his knees from the Muay Thai clinch, his vastly improved boxing and his razor-sharp elbows.
Daily sports pick: Penn. At welterweight, Penn's laziness and cardio are liabilities, but he always arrives for lightweight bouts more focused and in better shape, as he has to do so to make weight. He'll be ready for the very tough Ken-Flo and beat him on the ground.
Anderson Silva (24-4) vs Forrest Griffin (16-5)
Offshore sportsbook odds: Silva -330, Griffin +255
SILVA WILL WIN IF: He keeps doing what he does best. He'll dodge Griffins punches and pick him apart with his lethal, lightning-fast arsenal of kicks, spinning backfists and Muay Thai knees. Aside from pure physical strength, he's pretty much better than Griffin at everything.
GRIFFIN WILL WIN IF: He stays aggressive and smothers Silva. He should be the heavier man on fight night, so he has to use that to his advantage. Also, Griffin's leg kicks are fantastic and he could use them to slow Silva down. Lastly, he could pull out a miracle submission, as he did against superior ground fighter "Shogun" Rua. Silva has been caught with a surprise submission before, so you never know.
Daily sports pick: Silva. Griffin will make the fight worth the price per head, but he's an inferior fighter. He is smart, though, so he could still pull an upset if he arrives to the octagon with a creative game plan.
