U.S. Wins 2-0 over Mexico in World Cup Qualifying

The United States soccer team continued their dominance of Mexico, winning 2-0 on Wednesday night in a Soccer Betting World Cup qualifier at Columbus, Ohio. Michael Bradley, son of head coach Bob Bradley, scored twice for the U.S. team.

The United States is now 9-0-2 in their last nine home games against Mexico dating back to 2000. The game in Columbus was a sellout with fans from both U.S. and Mexico teams in attendance. “When we first came out to warm up there were quite a few Mexicans - I think they got here early,” United States midfielder Landon Donovan said, “When we came out to kick off, the majority of people were Americans. They were great. They were very loud.”

The match on Wednesday started slowly but Bradley finally broke through with a goal in the 43rd minute. DaMarcus Beasley had a corner kick that found Oguchi Onyewu but his header was saved by Mexico goaltender Oswaldo Sanchez and the rebound found Bradley who put it home. “It was a great corner from Beas, and Landon did a great job heading it back,” Bradley said. “It was not so hard for me to put it in.” That 1-0 score was nearly the final but Bradley scored in second half stoppage time on a pass from Donovan.

Mexico played shorthanded for the latter part of the game as Mexico captain Rafael Marquez was ejected in the 65th minute for spiking U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard. That incident cost Mexico as they lost Marquez but it also cost Howard a yellow card and he will now be suspended for the El Salvador match on March 28th since this was his second yellow card in qualifying.
“I wanted to apologize publicly to my teammates, and to the coaches and to the administration and to the fans and to my country,” Marquez said, “Tell my fans that I’m sorry. It’s just the desire to win and not knowing what to do, maybe it’s provocation. … I know I’m important to the team. And I shouldn’t set this kind of example. But this is just starting. There are still many important games.”

The U.S. team was rarely threatened by Mexico in the game as the U.S. defense was excellent. “We did a real nice job of getting after them and not letting them breathe,” head coach Bob Bradley said. “I think everybody on our team was really excited to play tonight,” he added. “Anytime you play against Mexico, it’s special. On top of it, it’s for a Soccer Betting World Cup qualifier.”

Mexico could be in trouble considering they have not played well of late and really were non-competitive against the United States. “Football is a big sport and, face it, sometimes it’s not a friend of (patience),” Mexico head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said. “But I’m optimistic because I think we have a good team. We have to score goals - that’s our biggest problem.”
