Twitter is having some kind of melt-down as it is not displaying tweets for thousands of users across several countries. This is the error message many users are getting.
Judging from the trending #hashtags on the right, most of them castigating twitter, the service must be working for some.
It is possible that this new asinine policy announced by Elon on Friday, to limit the number of posts users can read, is causing the issue, since the servers now have to keep a rolling count of how many tweets have been “read” by each user.
Earlier in the week, Elon also announced that tweets won’t be visible to those who do not have accounts or those who are not logged in.
Here is one explanation for the outage today — that the new policies and the hastily written software to implement them, are causing client apps to repeat requests when the response is an error, thus creating an unintended DDOS attack!

Who knows what is driving these decisions. It is certainly not business needs. This not going to attract advertisers or new paying subscribers. Perhaps, Elon’s ego gets pinched ever time someone does not respond to one of his tweets with excessive fawning or a virtual tongue bath.
I know many of us here don’t care two hoots about twitter and purposefully don’t use it, but we have to keep in mind that twitter still serves many organizations and the people who follow them (e.g., news orgs, weather, government and emergency services) and also twitter has the power to influence millions of minds, mainly with information and disinformation and it is capable of all sorts of mischief given its new owner. We, as progressives, need to keep an eye on it and perhaps hasten its demise.
Twitter meltdown. Again.
