Twins agree to terms with lefthander Rogers

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. -- Twins manager Ron Gardenhire announced after Wednesday's exhibition game that the team has agreed to a contract with free agent Kenny Rogers, a veteran lefthanded starter.

The official excecution of the contract is pending the passing of a Twins' physical by Rogers. The pitcher was going to fly from his home in the Dallas area to Fort Myers to undertake the physical, either late Wednesday night or today.

General Manager Terry Ryan refused to comment extensively on the deal with Rogers, saying there was nothing official until the pitcher passed the physical.

Ryan did say: "Signing him would fit our situation."

Rogers, 38, was 13-8 with a 3.84 ERA for Texas last season. He is 145-106 with a 4.20 ERA for his 15-year career.

The Twins sought Rogers to replace another lefthander, Eric Milton, in the strarting rotation. Milton underwent extensive surgery on his left knee last week and has been ruled out for at least four months of the 2003 season.
