Brett Favre, Bill Parcells, Ricky Williams, and Ahman Green. It doesn’t exactly sound like a recipe for a tasty Thanksgiving meal does it? But those are the names the NFL has placed on its Thanksgiving menu this year. And those are the names you’re most likely to hear this Thanksgiving as your eating you’re meal and watching football on television. The annual “football and turkey day” will pit the Green Bay Packers against the Detriot Lions and the Miami Dolphins against the Dallas Cowboys. In years past, some games shown on T.V. during Thanksgiving have all but helped you fall asleep faster after a tasty meal. But this year’s games feature some interesting matchups. The Detriot Lions, who were 3-7 heading into this past weekend, play every year on Thanksgiving. Which used to be desert for football fans as they watched the legendary Barry Sanders torch opposing defenses with his shifty moves. However, since his sudden retirement, watching the Lions on Thanksgiving has almost been as entertaining as a trip to the weight scale after the Thanksgiving meal. But this year’s matchup between the Lions and Packers (5-5 entering this past weekend) looks to be more entertaining than some recent Thanksgiving games. Favre (1,924 pass yards, 18 TDs) and Green (1,172 rush yards, 10 TDs) will go up against a young but hungry Lions club.
Steve Mariucci, one of the best coaches in the league today, has only won three of the first 10 games as the Lions head coach. However, Mariucci has had to coach this season with cornerback Dre’ Bly (leg), linebacker Boss Bailey (shoulder), and wide receiver Charles Rogers (collarbone) injured. Three players which were expected to make major contributions this season. Add in that James Stewart (running back) was lost for the season early on and that Joey Harrington (quarterback) took longer than expected to get into a groove, and you see that Mariucci is doing a good job in Detriot. Harrington (1,870 pass yards, 11 TDs) has had to throw to a lot of young, inexperienced receivers this season. Then add in that Harrington is only in his second year in the league and those numbers quickly become impressive.
This Thanksgiving Harrington will be throwing to Scotty Anderson (325 receiving yards), Shawn Bryson (249 receiving yards), and Bill Schroeder (239 receiving yards). Detroit has won two of their last three games (not including this past weekends game). During that stretch Harrington has thrown for 621 yards. In the evening contest the Miami Dolphins (6-4) travel to Texas and battle the Dallas Cowboys (7-3). This matchup features one of the best running backs in the NFL (Ricky Williams) against one of the best coaches in the NFL (Bill Parcells). Each team will be vying for a playoff spot with the winner inching closer to the postseason. And if the NFL isn’t wetting your appetite, then on Thanksgiving night college football takes the stage as the Mississippi Rebels will take on their arch-rival the Mississippi State Bulldogs in their annual grudge match. Add in a delicious turkey, along with some dressing, ham and cranberries and this Thanksgiving is shaping up to be a holiday to remember.
