I’m not going to spend much time breaking down the two starting pitchers tonight. If you’re looking for consistency, neither Yusmeiro Petit nor Roberto Hernandez offers any. Each guy can be very good at times, each guy can look like a misplaced minor leaguer on the wrong night. Off the data, I prefer Petit. But I can’t really say that he’s a pitcher who inspires great confidence.

My take here is far more on the teams than the pitchers. The Giants seem to have gotten over what was a pretty ugly stretch of baseball. I don’t see this team as a powerhouse, and I also don’t know that they’re built for the post-season this year. But I do expect the Giants to still be playing in October. It’s a veteran outfit with a strong skipper in Bruce Bochy, and even minus a couple of key components they’re sticking right with the Dodgers in the NL West.

The Phillies are just plain lousy, and it’s going to only be shocking if this team doesn’t unload a few veterans between now and the end of the month with the trade deadline looming. Therefore, it’s also not surprising that the Phillies are playing what I’d have to term as uninspired baseball right now. This is pretty much the standard atmosphere for a team with too many older guys and no hope of doing anything but playing out the string. There’s still going to be the occasional good game, but that’s the exception rather than the rule.

The Phillies are 9-18 in their last 27 games, and that’s with a five-game winning streak mixed in. So in the other 22 games, we’re looking at 4-18. There’s not a doubt in my mind the Phillies would be best served to start calling up whatever prospects they deem as 2015 roster possibilities. Get them some big league innings now and see what they’ve got. To me, it’s pointless to keep trooping out players who are not going to be around much longer. The results might not be any different with new blood on the diamond, but the energy will be greatly enhanced, and I have no doubt at all about that.

As for tonight, my only real concern is if the bad Petit shows up and the good Hernandez makes a surprise appearance for Philly. With erratic pitchers such as this duo, that’s always a possibility. But aside from that, I’d much rather consider the contender vs. the team playing out the string, so the Giants are the choice this evening.

STOPTHEFEVER is my choice. Should come out solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the front end recently. Is hard not to consider based on speed figures which have been decent - 80 avg - of late. A solid 99 avg Equibase class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this group.

HEROIC INDEED - Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays. I believe Dotolo is making a good move here. This gelding can only be aided by the shorter trip. If you review the PP's for this horse, you'll see he has recorded the top speed rating at the distance and surface. A repeat race in this event and this horse has a superb chance to win. FEBRUARY POINT - This gelding is in good form, having run a strong race on Jul 14th, finishing second. I really like sprinters that make a fast turnaround. I always like to see a thoroughbred getting Lasix for the first time. Rogers adds it on this one today.

Top ATS team back in action Tuesday

The top team against the spread in the WNBA is back in action Tuesday after the brief hiatus of the All-Star break.

The Phoenix Mercury, owners of a 15-5-1 ATS mark, are on the road to face the Seattle Storm (9-15 ATS). Sportsbooks opened the Mercury as 5.5-point road dogs, but that line has since moved to Mercury -6.

Prior to the All-Star break, the Mercury went 7-0 ATS with two of those ATS wins coming on the road.

Wind blowing out to center at Wrigley Field Tuesday

According to DailyBaseballData.com, forecasts are calling for wind to blow out to dead-center field at 12 mph at Wrigley Field Tuesday.

Per Covers' MLB Stadiums page for Wrigley Field, the Over is 4-1 when wind blows out to center field and is 2-0 O/U when winds gust between 10-20 mph.

The San Diego Padres visit the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, with Eric Stults scheduled to start for the Padres and Kyle Hendricks slated to get the ball for the home team. The total for the game is currently off the board.


Rockies' RF Carlos Gonzalez, questionable Tuesday

Gonzalez is dealing with a hand injury and is questionable to play in Tuesday's game against the Nationals.


Indians struggling with Reyburn behind the plate

The Cleveland Indians are 1-7 in their last eight ball games with umpire D.J. Reyburn calling balls and strikes.

Reyburn is scheduled to work the plate at Target Field as the Indians continue their series with the Minnesota Twins.

Current odds have the Indians as -143 road faves with Danny Salazar on the mound, while the Twins are slated to counter with Yohan Pino.

Line on the move in Stampeders-Eskimos matchup

The pointspread has been on the move since post in the Canadian Football League's Battle of Alberta.

The LV Superbook opened the Edmonton Eskimos as 2.5-point home favorites earlier Monday, but that moved to -2 after a couple of hours. Earlier Tuesday morning, that spread moved to Eskies -1.

Both teams are unbeaten straight up as the Stamps head in 3-0 (2-1 ATS) and the Eskimos 4-0 (3-1 ATS).
