Tuesday's MLB Game of the Day: Mets at Cubs

Cubs' Jake Arrieta has not recorded a quality start in his last four outings and has lasted six innings in just one of those starts.

New York Mets at Chicago Cubs (A: +135, H: -145, Total: 7.0)

The "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field have been anything but kind to the New York Mets. The Mets have lost eight straight regular-season road games to the Chicago Cubs, a streak they’ll try to break in the second contest of a three-game set Tuesday.

Chicago improved its National League-best home record to 29-15 with a 5-1 victory in the series opener, getting a three-run blast from Anthony Rizzo and a strong outing from Jon Lester. The loss snapped the Mets’ streak of eight straight wins against the Cubs, including a sweep in last year’s NL Championship Series and a four-game sweep earlier this month in New York. The Cubs’ starting pitching, which limped into the All-Star break, has turned in four solid starts to begin the second half. The Mets will try to beat reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta for the second time in 2 1/2 weeks after touching him for four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings July 2 in New York.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Chicago, ESPN

INJURY REPORT:

Mets - SP N. Syndergaard (Probable Tuesday, arm), RP J. Henderson (15-Day DL, bicep), 1B L. Duda (15-Day DL, back), 3B D. Wright (60-Day DL, neck).

Cubs - CF D. Fowler (15-Day DL, hamstring), RP T. Cahill (15-Day DL, knee), 3B C. Coghlan (15-Day DL, ribs), LF J. Soler (15-Day DL, hamstring).

WEATHER REPORT: The weather forecast couldn't be more perfect for what, on paper, looks like a potential game of the year candidate. Clear skies, temperatures in the low-80's, and a bit of a breeze (5 mph) blowing in from right field will welcome these two teams to the field Tuesday night.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (9-4, 2.56 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (12-4, 2.68)

Syndergaard, who has been battling bone chips in his elbow, received a few extra days coming out of the All-Star break. The 23-year-old has been inconsistent over the past couple of weeks, but he held the Cubs to one run over seven innings July 3 in New York. Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in two starts against Chicago.

Arrieta has not recorded a quality start in his last four outings and has lasted six innings in just one of those starts. The 30-year-old’s last outing before the All-Star break was a rough one, as he allowed six runs over six innings in a loss at Pittsburgh. Arrieta is 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA in six starts against the Mets.

TRENDS:

* Mets are 1-7 in their last 8 Tuesday games.
* Mets are 7-0 in Syndergaard's last 7 starts vs. National League Central.
* Cubs are 1-6 in their last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Cubs are 11-3 in Arrieta's last 14 home starts.
* Over is 7-1 in Syndergaard's last 8 starts overall.
* Under is 9-2 in Cubs last 11 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Mets are 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The public is favoring the home favorite Chicago Cubs at a rate of 64 percent. Early returns on the total were showing 86 percent of the wagers on Under 7.0.

Mostly sunny 77 °F

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (53-38) at New York Yankees (46-46)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles have dropped back-to-back contests against the fifth- and fourth-place teams in the American League East to see their division lead dwindle to just 1 1/2 games. The Orioles look to get back on track when they play the second contest of their four-game series versus the host New York Yankees on Tuesday.

Baltimore had won four in a row and six of seven before it answered Sunday's 5-2 setback to Tampa Bay with a 2-1 loss to New York, marking just its third loss to the Yankees in nine outings dating back to last season. Jonathan Schoop belted a solo homer on Monday to hit safely in 12 of 13 games this month, but he is batting just .226 in his career versus New York and 1-for-5 against Tuesday starter Nathan Eovaldi. Carlos Beltran continued his torrid stretch with three hits in the series opener to improve to 11-for-27 with four RBIs in his last six games. The veteran is batting .303 on the season with 19 homers, but is just 3-for-12 versus Tuesday starter Vance Worley.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Vance Worley (2-0, 2.87 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Nathan Eovaldi (7-6, 5.11)

After tossing 1 2/3 innings of relief on Sunday, Worley will make the spot start two nights later versus New York. The 28-year-old didn't fare well in his lone encounter with the Yankees, allowing one run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in a no-decision on June 4. Worley has two starts under his belt this season, with his longest outing lasting six innings in an 11-5 win against Texas on April 15.

Eovaldi has also worked out of the bullpen of late and looks to exact revenge versus Baltimore, against which he was battered for five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision on June 3. The 26-year-old hard-throwing right-hander has been rumored to be on the trade block, and a strong start can only help his stock. Eovaldi allowed two hits in 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief against Boston on Friday.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York DH Alex Rodriguez, who belted his 696th homer on Monday, is batting .301 in his career versus Baltimore.

2. Orioles 1B Chris Davis is iffy to play on Tuesday after visiting a hospital to deal with a stomach virus.

3. Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (sore left foot) is questionable to participate in any of the games of this series, manager Joe Girardi told reporters.

Partly sunny 82 °F

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (52-42) at Washington Nationals (56-37)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Washington Nationals got a well-deserved day off on Monday after battling for 18 innings only to fall 2-1 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Nationals will try to shake off the sting of that setback and return to the business of increasing their lead in the National League East when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a three-games series on Tuesday.

Daniel Murphy’s ninth-inning home run sent Sunday’s contest into extra innings and gave Washington a shot at its sixth straight win, but the bullpen came up just a tad short. The Nationals staff is on a roll of late while allowing two runs or fewer in each of the last six games and is hoping Reynaldo Lopez can keep the run going when he makes his major league debut on Tuesday. The Dodgers aren’t quite as hot in the pitching department with ace Clayton Kershaw on the disabled list and dropped two of three at Arizona to begin their road trip. Kenta Maeda could not make it out of the fifth inning in Sunday’s 6-5 setback, which dropped Los Angeles to 22-24 on the road.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), MASN2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Scott Kazmir (7-3, 4.52 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Reynaldo Lopez (NA)

Some consistency from Kazmir would certainly improve the outlook on the Los Angeles staff, but the veteran followed up a 10-strikeout, three-hit performance on July 2 by getting knocked around against San Diego on July 8. The Texas native walked three in as many innings and threw 85 pitches while allowing three runs in the no decision. Kazmir was sharper against the Nationals on June 21, when he allowed two runs in six innings in a game the Dodgers went on to win 3-2.

Lopez wowed scouts at the Futures Game during All-Star weekend with a fastball that touched 100 mph and recorded 109 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings in the minors this season. The Dominican Republic native is filling the rotation spot vacated by Joe Ross (shoulder) and fellow prospect Lucas Giolito, who was sent back to the minors prior to the break. Lopez amassed a 4-5 record with a 3.19 ERA in 16 starts spread between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Nationals are expected to place LHP Sammy Solis (right knee) on the DL to make room for Lopez.

2. Los Angeles CF Joc Pederson (shoulder) is expected to come off the 15-day DL during the series.

3. Washington managed eight hits in 57 at-bats on Sunday and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:05 PM EST

The Miami Marlins continue to swim in the right direction with wins in six of their last seven contests while the Philadelphia Phillies are treading water in the shallow end of the pool. Manager Don Mattingly's upstart charges look to improve their position at the expense of their National League East rivals on Tuesday when the teams play the second contest of their four-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Martin Prado led off the 11th inning with a homer to stake Miami to a 3-2 win in the series opener, marking his 22nd hit in 14 games. The 32-year-old Venezuelan is 10-for-24 versus Philadelphia this season and 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles against Tuesday starter Vince Velasquez. The Phillies failed to hold a two-run lead in the ninth inning of Monday's contest to mark their second loss in 38 such situations and third in their last four outings overall. Rookie Tommy Joseph went deep in the series opener for his fourth homer and 12th hit in his last eight games.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Urena (1-1, 7.52 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (8-2, 3.32)

Urena is expected to be recalled from Triple-A New Orleans to make Tuesday's start, marking his first this season with Miami and 10th in two years. The 24-year-old Dominican worked out of the bullpen on 16 occasions with the Marlins before being shuffled to the Zephyrs, with whom he owns a 1-3 record, a 3.99 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings. Urena allowed one run in one inning versus the Phillies on May 18, but has yet to record a decision in four encounters with the club.

Velasquez recorded his third straight win in as many outings on July 8 after allowing two runs in six innings of a 5-3 victory over Colorado. The 24-year-old has permitted four runs on 18 hits while striking out 20 in 17 frames during his win streak. Velasquez bounced back from a no-decision versus Miami on May 6 to scatter three hits and strike out 10 in five innings of a 3-1 victory over the Marlins on May 17.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia LF Cody Asche struck out in all three at-bats in the series opener to fall to 3-for-25 in his last eight contests.

2. The Marlins (50-42) are eight games over .500 for the first time since June 3, 2012.

3. Phillies 2B Cesar Hernandez is mired in a 19 at-bat hitless streak.

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (39-51) at Pittsburgh Pirates (47-45)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

A series in Washington that could have been a disaster was saved in the 18th inning Sunday, and the Pittsburgh Pirates will try to build off the momentum of that victory when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday. The Pirates got Monday off after battling to the 2-1 victory, which avoided a three-game sweep.

Pittsburgh appeared poised for a surge up the standings before bridging the All-Star break with a three-game slide and is hoping Sunday’s dramatic win can put it back on the path to postseason. Starling Marte provided the dramatic moment with his solo home run in the top of the 18th, but the Pirates pitching staff was the star with only All-Star closer Mark Melancon surrendering a run. The Brewers are poised for a run at the trade deadline as the rebuilding effort continues, and catcher Jonathan Lucroy is the big prize. Lucroy did not do much to help his trade value on Sunday, when his passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run to score in a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Junior Guerra (6-2, 3.06 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (2-1, 3.86)

Guerra had a stretch of three straight dominant outings come to an end when he was reached for three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to suffer a loss against St. Louis on July 10. The 31-year-old rookie allowed a total of two runs in 22 1/3 innings over his previous three outings. Guerra is making his first career start against the Pirates and 2-0 with a 3.44 ERA on the road.

Taillon was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder fatigue after a start on June 29, and the Pirates are being cautious with one of their top prospects. The former No. 2 overall draft pick struck out six and did not walk a batter while allowing one run in six innings at Seattle in that June 29 effort. Taillon is seeing Milwaukee for the first time and did not fare well in his lone previous appearance against an NL Central rival, surrendering three home runs in four innings at the Chicago Cubs in his lone loss.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers UTL Hernan Perez (left foot) had x-rays come back negative and is day-to-day.

2. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen went 0-for-8 on Sunday and has struck out 12 times in his last eight games.

3. Milwaukee SS Jonathan Villar recorded seven stolen bases in his last eight games.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (57-36) at Boston Red Sox (51-39)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants still own the best record in the majors but came out of the All-Star break a little sluggish while getting swept in a three-game series at San Diego. Things don’t get any easier when the road trip moves across the country for the start of a quick two-game series at the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.

The Giants struggled to hit in two of the three games at San Diego, including a 5-3 loss on Sunday in which veteran journeyman Edwin Jackson carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and managed to fall on a walk-off balk in Saturday’s 7-6 setback. San Francisco is still not feeling much pressure in the National League West with the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 1/2 games back but is in a tough stretch of schedule with three games at the New York Yankees to close out the trip and a four-game series against NL East-leading Washington looming at the end of the month. The Red Sox had a six-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss at the Yankees on Sunday but are still riding high with three solid starting pitching performances in a row to begin the second half. Rick Porcello will try to keep that run going on Tuesday before Drew Pomeranz makes his team debut on Wednesday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jake Peavy (5-7, 5.09 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (11-2, 3.66)

Peavy is making his first start in Boston since being traded to San Francisco prior to the deadline in 2014. The former Cy Young Award winner was part of the Red Sox World Series-winning team in 2013 but is having some trouble recapturing that magic of late. Peavy lasted 4 1/3 innings in his final start before the break and failed to complete five innings in two of his last three turns.

Porcello has not lost since May 17 and picked up wins in three straight starts prior to the All-Star break. The New Jersey native finished the first half strong by holding Tampa Bay to one run and six hits while notching five strikeouts without a walk in seven innings on July 9. The career American Leaguer is making his fourth lifetime start against the Giants and was reached for three runs and five hits in six innings without factoring in the decision at San Francisco on June 7.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox RF Mookie Betts went 0-for-4 on Sunday to snap a 13-game hitting streak.

2. San Francisco RF Hunter Pence (hamstring) left a rehab assignment after three innings on Saturday and sat out Sunday due to a possible aggravation of the injury.

3. Boston 1B Hanley Ramirez is 1-for-13 with four strikeouts in the last three games.

The Detroit Tigers have received some solid pitching since the All-Star break to win three of four games and look to continue the trend when they host the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. The Tigers have allowed five runs in their three wins over the last four days and turn to veteran right-hander Anibal Sanchez in the second of a three-game series against the American League-worst Twins.

Detroit has won all seven meetings between the AL Central rivals this season, including a 1-0 triumph in the series opener on Monday. Justin Upton homered to provide the only run for the Tigers and has warmed up by going 11-for-36 over the last 10 games with a pair of blasts and five RBIs. Minnesota, which has won six of its last 10, owns an AL-low 33 wins this season and fired GM Terry Ryan on Monday to set a new direction. Twins infielder Eduardo Nunez is 2-for-16 since making his first AL All-Star team.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LH Tommy Milone (2-2, 5.23 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (5-10, 6.75)

Milone has won his last two starts, getting 26 runs of support while allowing three runs on 10 hits over 11 total innings. The 29-year-old USC product had yielded at least four runs in five of his first seven outings this season – one of them out of the bullpen. Victor Martinez (5-for-10) and Miguel Cabrera (6-for-15) have caused trouble for Milone, who is 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA against Detroit in his career.

Sanchez has struggled in two starts since rejoining the rotation, permitting 12 runs on 13 hits over 8 1/3 innings during losses to Toronto and Cleveland. The 32-year-old Venezuelan has surrendered 17 homers in 22 outings – 14 of them starts. Danny Santana boasts success (6-for-14) while Brian Dozier (2-for-2) has been controlled by Sanchez, who is 4-3 with a 2.32 ERA lifetime versus the Twins.

WALK-OFFS

1. Minnesota C Kurt Suzuki is 6-for-14 this season against the Tigers, but is just 1-for-10 since the All-Star break.

2. Detroit CF Cameron Maybin has hit safely in 24 of 26 games at home in 2016 and is batting .420 with 13 walks at Comerica Park this season.

3. The Tigers have outscored the Twins 43-21 during their seven-game winning streak in the series.

The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds are struggling through miserable seasons, but the two worst teams in the National League send pitchers to the mound Tuesday who could play a key role in the near future. Cody Reed – ranked as the Reds’ third-best prospect according to MLB.com – makes his sixth major-league start for host Cincinnati, while the Braves counter with Tyrell Jenkins – Atlanta’s minor-league pitcher of the year in 2015 who gets his second career start.

The Reds limped into the All-Star break, losing 16 of 21 games, but improved to 3-1 since the break with Monday’s 8-2 victory. Cincinnati’s bullpen fired four scoreless innings in the series opener, lowering its ERA to 2.20 for July. Atlanta has dropped three of its past four games, being outscored 23-8 to fall to a major-league worst 32-61. Third baseman Adonis Garcia is hitting .421 in his past 10 contests, but the Braves have scored three runs or fewer 54 times in 93 games, going 6-48 in those contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Tyrell Jenkins (0-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. Reds LH Cody Reed (0-4, 8.39)

The Braves moved Jenkins – ranked as the organization’s seventh-best prospect by MLB.com – to the bullpen a month before promoting him to the majors, and the 23-year-old has impressed in four relief appearances and a spot start July 6 at Philadelphia (one run, four hits, 4 2/3 innings). Jenkins does not rack up strikeouts, but relies on a good three-pitch mix (fastball, curveball and changeup) and solid location to generate groundball outs. Other than a four-inning relief appearance June 27 when he allowed four runs to Cleveland, Jenkins has limited opponents to three runs on 10 hits in 10 innings.

The 23-year-old Reed, who features a mid-90s fastball and a sweeping slider, has racked up 29 strikeouts in 24 2/3 big-league innings but has surrendered nine homers. He gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of a 7-3 loss at Miami on July 10, just the second time in five games he has allowed fewer than two homers in a game. Acquired from Kansas City in the Johnny Cueto trade last July, Reed went 6-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A Louisville before being promoted in June.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Braves have hit 30 homers in their past 29 games, after hitting only 27 in their first 64 games.

2. Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases Monday, and is 6-for-16 with five steals in his past four games.

3. Atlanta CF Ender Inciarte went hitless in four at-bats, ending his six-game hitting streak.

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 8:15 PM EST

The Cleveland Indians may be comfortably atop the American League Central, but the Kansas City Royals have dominated their division foes when they visit Kauffman Stadium. The defending World Series-champion Royals vie for their 16th win in 18 encounters with visiting AL Central rivals on Tuesday, when they play the middle contest of their three-game series against the Indians.

Jarrod Dyson belted a grand slam on Monday as Kansas City recorded its fourth straight victory overall versus first-place Cleveland with a 7-3 triumph. The Indians had won six of their previous seven meetings with the Royals before the latter brought out the brooms in Kansas City from June 13-15 and improved to 30-13 at home with Monday's victory. Francisco Lindor belted a solo homer in the series opener for his 18th hit and seventh RBI in 11 games versus Kansas City this season. The All-Star shortstop also has hit safely in nine of his last 10 contests heading into a matchup versus Tuesday starter Brian Flynn.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (10-3, 2.75 ERA) vs. Royals LH Brian Flynn (1-0, 2.39)

Salazar won six of his previous seven starts before escaping with a no-decision on July 9 after yielding six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings against the New York Yankees. The 26-year-old improved to 6-5 lifetime versus Kansas City after permitting one run and three hits in eight frames of a 6-1 win on June 3. Salazar's last loss came nearly two months ago after he allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings of a 5-2 setback against Boston on May 22.

Flynn is slated to make his first start of the season after 13 appearances out of the bullpen. The 26-year-old, who made five starts in limited duty over two seasons with Miami, yielded two runs and three hits in four innings of long relief against Cleveland on May 6. GAME: San Diego Padres (41-52) at St. Louis Cardinals (48-44)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko has feasted on San Diego Padres pitching this year and will try to pick on his former team again Tuesday, when the teams continue their four-game series in St. Louis. Gyorko, who was traded from the Padres to the Cardinals in December for outfielder Jon Jay, went 3-for-3 with a solo home run to highlight a 10-2 win in the series opener on Monday.

That gave the 27-year-old three consecutive three-hit performances versus San Diego, each of which has come with a home run. Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk also went deep in Monday's win as St. Louis improved to 2-2 on its 10-game homestand, a somewhat notable achievement for a team that entered the series with the third-worst winning percentage (.417) at home in the National League. Matt Kemp homered for the Padres, while Wil Myers went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the loss. Myers is hitless in 11 straight at-bats since slugging his 20th home run Friday against San Francisco.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Colin Rea (5-3, 4.95 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (8-6, 2.85)

Rea has been swapping quality starts with non-quality efforts since the beginning of June and was on the rocky end of things his last time out at Arizona. The 26-year-old gave up four runs and eight hits with three walks in 4 2/3 innings, which caused his road ERA to rise to 5.52. Rea has faced the Cardinals two times in his career and has been reached for eight runs in nine innings.

Since giving up 14 runs in 15 innings over a the course of three May starts, Martinez has posted a 1.02 ERA in a span of eight mostly dominant outings. He struck out a season-high 11 and allowed one run in five innings of a win at Milwaukee prior to the break. The former All-Star has posted a 5.51 ERA in five career meetings (two starts) with the Padres and will be wary of catcher Derek Norris, who is 3-for-5 with a triple against Martinez.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kemp needs one home run to reach 20 for the seventh time in his last eight seasons.

2. Grichuk has collected seven RBIs in his last six games.

3. The Padres are 10-26 all-time at the current Busch Stadium.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (35-57) at Colorado Rockies (43-49)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies look to even their record at home and win for the fourth time in five games since the All-Star break when they host the struggling Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. The Rockies improved to 21-22 with a 7-4 victory over the Rays on Monday in the opener of their three-game set as Trevor Story continued his standout rookie season with his 22nd homer.

Colorado posted 12 hits Monday and has scored 22 runs in three wins since the break while leadoff batter Charlie Blackmon is riding a 10-game hitting streak (14-for-45). Tyler Chatwood will try to rebound from a rough outing for the Rockies as he opposes promising rookie Blake Snell. The Rays have dropped 11 straight road games and 25 of 29 overall while sitting at the bottom of the American League in runs scored. Colorado must be careful against Evan Longoria, who notched his team-high 50th RBI on Monday and is 11-for-28 over his last seven contests.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (1-4, 3.69 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (8-5, 3.29)

Snell has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his first six major-league starts, including last time out against the Los Angeles Angels on July 7. The 23-year-old Seattle native took the loss in that game despite giving up two runs in six innings with a season-best seven strikeouts. Snell, who faces his first National League team, has yielded one home run but issued 17 walks in 31 2/3 innings.

Chatwood suffered only his second loss since early May last time out, when he permitted four runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings against Philadelphia. The 26-year-old has not allowed a home run in eight starts but has issued at least three walks in six consecutive outings. Chatwood is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA over two career outings – both in 2011 while with the Angels -- against Tampa Bay.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays 2B and leadoff batter Logan Forsythe is just 6-for-45 over his last 11 games.

2. Colorado 1B Mark Reynolds recorded three hits Monday after going hitless in 15 at-bats over his previous five games.

3. Tampa Bay INF Steve Pearce (hamstring) will be activated for Tuesday’s contest and UTIL Nick Franklin was optioned to Triple-A Durham.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (52-42) at Arizona Diamondbacks (40-53)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After avoiding a sweep at one team currently in last place, the Toronto Blue Jays seek success at the home of another cellar dweller when they begin a two-game interleague set against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The Blue Jays won eight of nine before the All-Star break but suffered back-to-back one-run losses at Oakland to begin the second half.

Behind reigning MVP Josh Donaldson, who hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the top of the ninth inning, Toronto rallied to take Sunday's series finale 5-3 and seemingly right the ship. "We desperately needed that as a team," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters. "We had the little lead, they came back and tied it. That's a big win for us." Toronto has a good chance to sustain the momentum Tuesday night with All-Star Aaron Sanchez - who has won eight straight decisions - on the mound. The Diamondbacks took two of three at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers to begin the second half but they are still a woeful 17-33 at Chase Field.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (9-1, 2.97 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (2-0, 5.28)

Sanchez has held opponents to two runs or fewer in seven of his last eight outings, although he lasted just five innings in a no-decision against Detroit prior to the break. The 24-year-old is 6-0 with a 2.20 ERA in 10 road starts and has surrendered three home runs in 69 2/3 innings away from home. Sanchez has never faced the Diamondbacks but has surrendered three runs in 19 2/3 innings in his career in interleague play.

Godley is being recalled from Triple-A Reno to take the spot of the struggling Shelby Miller, who was sent to the minors last week. The University of Tennessee product made his second start for Arizona on July 5, allowing four runs and eight hits in five innings of a win over San Diego, before returning to the Aces for a pair of appearances. Godley, 26, allowed a run in 1 2/3 innings of relief at Toronto last month.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 3B Jake Lamb went 7-for-12 with a homer and four RBIs in the first series after the break.

2. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt is batting .350 over his last 34 games.

3. Blue Jays LF Michael Saunders is 1-for-17 with six strikeouts in a five-game stretch.

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California

The Oakland Athletics look to continue their recent strong play at home when they host the Houston Astros on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Oakland improved to 3-1 on its post-break 10-game homestand with Monday's 7-4 triumph in which it erased a deficit with a five-run fourth inning highlighted by Yonder Alonso's two-run single.

Alonso also doubled in a run, giving him five RBIs in his last two contests. Houston, which split a four-game series against Oakland at home to close out the first half of the season, dropped to 2-2 on its six-game road trip. Jose Altuve continued his hot hitting since the break, registering a two-hit performance Monday to improve to 8-for-16 during the trek. Carlos Correa hit a pair of doubles in the series opener for his fourth two-hit effort in nine contests.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (6-9, 4.80 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Dillon Overton (1-1, 11.42)

Keuchel finally has begun to resemble the pitcher who won the American League Cy Young Award last year, allowing fewer than three earned runs four times over his last five starts whlie going 3-0 in that span. The 28-year-old native of Oklahoma settled for a no-decision against Oakland on July 10 despite giving up just one run and four hits in seven innings. Keuchel lowered his career ERA versus the Athletics to 2.78 in that outing but remained at 2-3 with one complete game in 13 meetings (11 starts).

Overton will be brought up from Triple-A Nashville to make his third career start and first since June 30, when he was pounded by San Francisco for eight runs on eight hits and three walks in three innings. The 24-year-old, who also hails from Oklahoma, was victorious in his major-league debut five days earlier as he gave up three runs — all solo homers — over 5 2/3 frames against the Angels in Los Angeles. Overton has posted a 10-4 record with one complete game and a 2.98 ERA in 16 contests (15 starts) for Nashville this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros C Jason Castro has recorded two hits in two of his last three games but has not registered an RBI since June 25.

2. Oakland OF Khris Davis belted his team-leading 23rd home run Monday, leaving him four shy of matching his career high set last year with Milwaukee.

3. Houston OF prospect Daz Cameron is out for the season with a broken left index finger after being hit by a pitch July 7 while playing for Class-A Tri-City.

GAME: Texas Rangers (55-39) at Los Angeles Angels (41-52)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California

Much like his team, Texas Rangers rookie Nomar Mazara is struggling to rediscover his sizzling early-season form. Mazara and the first-place Rangers will look to get untracked Tuesday as they continue their three-game series against the host Los Angeles Angels, who have won eight of their last 10.

Mazara is batting .202 over his last 31 games and was moved down to the eighth spot in the order in Monday’s 9-5 loss to the Angels as the Rangers fell for the 12th time in their last 16 contests but maintained their 4 1/2-game lead over Houston in the American League West. “We are trying to stay focused and stay positive,” Texas' Adrian Beltre told reporters. "We all know teams go through rough stretches like this, no matter how good your team is. We’ll get out of it sooner or later. We still believe in ourselves.” The Rangers may want to pitch around Angels star Mike Trout, a career .330 hitter against Texas who belted a three-run homer in Monday’s win and has five blasts and 14 RBIs over his last 21 games. Los Angeles leads the majors in runs scored this month and continues to be pleased with the first-base platoon of Ji-Man Choi and Jefry Marte, who have combined for six homers and 16 RBIs in 143 at-bats.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Kyle Lohse (0-1, 10.80 ERA) vs. Angels RH Tim Lincecum (1-3, 6.85)

Lohse made his season debut last Tuesday against Minnesota and allowed six runs over five innings while pitching through a right oblique strain. The 37-year-old struggled with his velocity in the loss but was cleared to make his second start with the Rangers following a successful bullpen session over the weekend. Albert Pujols is 5-for-12 against Lohse, who is 4-5 with a 6.28 ERA in 12 career starts versus the Angels.

Lincecum is hoping to build on his encouraging outing against Baltimore last Tuesday, when he gave up three runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. The two-time National League Cy Young Award winner is winless in four starts since allowing one run over six frames in his Angels debut on June 18 at Oakland. Ian Desmond is 10-for-15 with two home runs versus Lincecum, who made two starts against Texas in the 2010 World Series and went 2-0 with a 3.29 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation and recalled C Juan Graterol from Triple-A Salt Lake.

2. Texas RF Shin-Soo Choo has been held out of the starting lineup for the past four games due to lower back tightness but appeared as a pinch-hitter in Monday’s loss.

3. Angels RHP Nick Tropeano exited Monday’s game with right elbow soreness and will have an MRI on Tuesday.

The Chicago White Sox attempt to put an end to their losing streak when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Chicago finally scored some runs in the opener but saw its skid reach five games as closer David Robertson was unable to preserve a 3-0 lead in the ninth inning.

The White Sox recorded a total of one run over their previous four contests before matching it two batters into Monday's loss. Seattle also had been having problems crossing the plate, as it recorded just one run in each of its previous two games and was one inning away from being shut out. Adam Lind delivered the big blow for the Mariners on Monday, launching his second three-run homer in five games while pinch-hitting with two outs. Kyle Seager went 1-for-4, giving him at least one hit in 17 of his last 18 contests.

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Jose Quintana (7-8, 3.21 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Wade Miley (6-6, 5.44)

Quintana looks to win his third consecutive start as he takes his first turn of the second half. The 27-year-old Colombian, who tossed a scoreless frame in the All-Star Game, notched the victory against Atlanta on July 9 despite yielding four runs and five hits — three homers — in six innings. Quintana has yet to defeat Seattle in his career, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in six meetings (five starts).

Miley lost his fourth straight start on July 9, when he was tagged for four runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings at Kansas City. The 29-year-old from Louisiana has not been victorious since scattering four hits over seven scoreless frames on June 7 against Cleveland. Miley has made three career starts against Chicago, going 1-2 with a 6.52 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox 3B Todd Frazier is four home runs away from reaching 30 for the second straight season.

2. Seattle LF Franklin Gutierrez registered his first two-hit performance since June 26, which also is when he last recorded an RBI (three).

3. Chicago has totaled four runs during its five-game losing streak after scoring at least five in each of its previous three contests.
