Preview: Cubs at Mets

GAME: Chicago Cubs (39-35) at New York Mets (40-37)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: -121, 112 TOTAL: 7

The Chicago Cubs are stuck in their longest slide of the season as they begin a three-game road series against the surging New York Mets on Tuesday. The Cubs have dropped five straight and appear to be headed to the Big Apple at the wrong time with the Mets on a four-game winning streak -- their longest since taking 11 in a row in April.

The Cubs will get a close look at Mets left-hander Jon Niese, who reportedly has been the subject of recent trade talks between the teams. Chicago stars Anthony Rizzo (2-for-13) and Starlin Castro (5-for-22) wouldn't mind seeing Niese switch dugouts, as they've struggled against the lefty. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said his team needs to "get back our offensive mojo" after being held to seven runs in its past six games. The Mets snapped out of their own offensive funk Sunday with a 7-2 win over Cincinnati after scoring two or fewer runs in six straight games and nine of their previous 10.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN Chicago, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (2-4, 4.46 ERA) vs. Mets LH Jon Niese (3-7, 4.12)

Hendricks' struggles continued Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he failed to get through six innings for the fourth consecutive start. The 25-year-old is winless in his last three outings and hasn't recorded a quality start in his last five turns, dating back to May 26. Hendricks was dominant in his only previous start against the Mets, allowing one run and three hits over seven innings last August.

Niese is winless in eight starts since May 9, but he has posted four consecutive quality starts. The 28-year-old limited Milwaukee to two runs over six innings in his last turn but didn't get a decision in a 3-2 loss. The Cubs roughed up Niese on May 14 in Chicago, when he was charged with six runs (four earned) in 6 1/3 innings and took the loss.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs swept the Mets in a four-game series in Chicago from May 11-14 and have won six straight meetings, dating to last season.

2. Mets OF Curtis Granderson is 14-for-31 with five home runs during an eight-game hitting streak.

3. The Cubs are 27-0 when leading after eight innings and 27-1 when leading after seven.

Preview: Giants at Marlins

GAME: San Francisco Giants (42-35) at Miami Marlins (31-46)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: 104, -113 TOTAL: 7

The San Francisco Giants are in the midst of an offensive surge entering Tuesday's opener of a three-game set against the host Miami Marlins, who find themselves in desperate need of runs in the absence of superstar slugger Giancarlo Stanton. The Giants have scored 38 times en route to winning four of their last five contests while the Marlins have mustered just 11 runs during their last seven games (1-6).

Matt Duffy and Buster Posey have been keying San Francisco's attack, with the former going 9-for-18 with two homers and nine runs scored in his last four games while the latter has 12 RBIs during a five-game hitting streak. Posey was also hot in the team's four-game series split with Miami on May 7-10, going 4-for-10 with four runs scored in the first three contests. While Giants manager Bruce Bochy admitted to being "very pleased" with his team's recent offensive showing, the same can not be said for those associated with Miami. The Marlins were shut out by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday while playing their second straight game without Stanton, who is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks with a broken left hand.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSBA (San Francisco), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (6-5, 4.05 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Mat Latos (2-5, 5.49)

Vogelsong continued to put his three-game losing skid in his rear-view mirror, recording his second straight dominant outing on Wednesday. The 37-year-old blanked San Diego over six innings after scattering three hits over 6 2/3 scoreless frames in a 7-0 win against Seattle on June 18. Vogelsong pitched well in his last meeting with Miami on May 10, settling for a no-decision opposite Latos despite permitting just one run on four hits in seven innings.

Latos was leveled by the long ball in his last outing, yielding a two-run homer to Kolten Wong and a three-run shot by Jason Heyward to pick up the loss against St. Louis. The 27-year-old only allowed one other hit over seven innings to suffer the setback and fell to 1-3 with a 7.60 ERA in 34 1/3 frames at Marlins Park this season. Facing Vogelsong, Latos also settled for a no-decision in his last outing with the Giants despite permitting one run on seven hits over seven frames on May 10.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Francisco RHP Tim Lincecum (right forearm) is expected to be placed on the disabled list for the first time in his nine-year career.

2. Miami LF Christian Yelich has collected six hits in his last two games after recording just two in his previous four.

3. Giants RHP Matt Cain (forearm) is expected to be activated from the disabled list to start Thursday's series finale versus the Marlins.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (44-29) at Houston Astros (45-34)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: 142, -154 TOTAL: 7

The Houston Astros struck first in a battle of division winners and own the most wins in the American League. The Kansas City Royals will try to even the series and match 45 wins when they visit the Astros for the second of a three-game set on Tuesday.

Houston entered the series slumping with six losses in 10 games but received its second straight strong pitching performance in a 6-1 win on Monday and is sending ace Dallas Keuchel to the mound on Tuesday in search of a third consecutive triumph. The Royals, who still own the best winning percentage in the AL, will counter with lefty Danny Duffy. Kansas City pitchers had not allowed more than three runs during a four-game winning streak entering the series, and the staff has guided the Royals to a 5-2 record on their nine-game road trip. The Astros are sitting at 3-2 on their seven-game homestand.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, ROOT Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (2-3, 5.44 ERA) vs. Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (9-3, 2.17)

Duffy returned from over a month on the disabled list due to biceps tendinitis and could not make it through five innings at Seattle on Wednesday. The 26-year-old went through the first four innings without allowing a run but was charged with two (one earned) on eight hits without factoring in the decision. Duffy is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in four road starts this season.

Keuchel bounced back from his worst start of the season at Seattle on June 20 with one of his best against the New York Yankees on Thursday. The 27-year-old scattered six hits and a walk while striking out a career-high 12 in his third career shutout. Keuchel is 7-0 with a 1.39 ERA in nine home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros CF Colby Rasmus (infection) missed the last three games and is not expected to play on Tuesday.

2. Royals 1B Eric Hosmer (finger) is likely to miss the entire series while SS Alcides Escobar (finger), who sat out Monday, is day-to-day.

3. Kansas City C Salvador Perez has homered in back-to-back games.

GAME: Chicago White Sox (32-42) at St. Louis Cardinals (51-24)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: 102, -110 TOTAL: 6.5

Chris Sale looks to become the second pitcher in major-league history to record double-digit strikeouts in eight straight outings when he leads the Chicago White Sox into an abbreviated two-game series at the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Making his 100th career start, the 26-year-old left-hander Sale would join Pedro Martinez (1999) should he accomplish the feat against the team with the best record in baseball (51-24).

"It's cool, but it would be a lot better if we were winning more games, for sure," said Sale, who has seen his team lose 10 of 12 away from U.S. Cellular Field to fall to an American League-worst 14-27 on the road. Conversely, St. Louis has won six in a row overall and boasts a majors-best 29-7 mark at home. Cardinals slugger Jason Heyward has grown increasing comfortable at the plate by hitting safely in 10 of his last 11 outings, going 17-for-43 with four homers and 10 RBIs in that stretch. Melky Cabrera is also heating up in his first season with the White Sox, going deep among his three hits in a 5-4 setback to Detroit on Sunday to improve to 12-for-27 with five runs scored in his last seven games.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, WPWR (Chicago), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Chris Sale (6-4, 3.02 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (5-4, 2.84)

After scattering two hits and striking out 14 over eight scoreless innings on June 19, Sale was blitzed for six runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 frames in a 6-1 setback to Minnesota five days later. The 6-6 Sale has fanned 85 batters during his staggering seven-start stretch, but has just a 3-3 mark to show for it. Sale, who has yet to face St. Louis in his career, has limited the opposition to a .206 batting average while posting a 4-3 mark on the road this season.

Lynn was moved up a day in the rotation as left-hander Jaime Garcia nurses a groin injury. The 28-year-old Lynn wouldn't mind a repeat of his performance in his first start since returning from the disabled list (forearm strain) on Thursday, scattering two hits over six scoreless innings in a 5-1 triumph against Miami. He handcuffed Chicago in their lone career meeting on June 13, 2012, allowing just three hits and striking out a career-high 12 in 7 1/3 frames to pick up the win.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis is attempting to win 10 in a row at home for the first time since 2004.

2. Chicago CF Adam Eaton is 9-for-22 with two homers and four runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

3. Rookie 1B Xavier Scruggs has recorded nine hits in his last five games, including an RBI single in the Cardinals' 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Preview: Dodgers at Diamondbacks

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (43-35) at Arizona Diamondbacks (37-39)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: -121, 112 TOTAL: 9

The Los Angeles Dodgers allowed just 11 runs during the first seven games of their 10-game road trip but the Arizona Diamondbacks almost equaled that total in the opener of a three-game set Monday. Arizona pushed across 10 runs over its final four at-bats to produce a 10-6 victory and halt a string of seven straight losses to the Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks had 13 hits in the opener while scoring their most runs since a 14-6 victory over Washington on May 12. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt had two hits and two RBIs to extend hitting streak to 10 games and improved his season totals against Los Angeles to 17-for-40 with 12 RBIs - along with four homers - in 10 games. Los Angeles center fielder Joc Pederson became the third National League rookie to hit 20 homers before July 1 and has one more game to chase down Albert Pujols (21 in 2001) or record-holder Wally Berger (22 in 1930). Dodgers second baseman Howie Kendrick is 8-for-15 with a homer against scheduled Arizona starter Rubby De La Rosa.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Carlos Frias (5-5, 4.31 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Rubby De La Rosa (6-3, 4.69)

Frias went 0-3 during a four-start stretch before defeating the Chicago Cubs in his last turn. He pitched five shutout innings against Chicago and allowed seven hits and three walks to land his second victory in his last nine starts. Frias is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two 2015 starts against the Diamondbacks.

De La Rosa has allowed just two earned runs while going 2-0 in 22 innings over his last three outings. The hot stretch follows two poor outings in which he gave up 16 runs and 19 hits in a 10-inning span, including an outing against the Dodgers in which he was pounded for nine runs and 10 hits in five innings. De La Rosa is 0-2 with a 12.60 ERA in two starts this season against Los Angeles, the organization he pitched for in 2011-12.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers LF Andre Ethier emerged from a 1-for-19 funk to go 3-for-5 with a homer Monday.

2. Arizona LF David Peralta has two hits and two RBIs in the opener and is 10-for-25 over the last seven games.

3. Los Angeles OF Carl Crawford (oblique) is slated to start a rehab assignment at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday but isn't close to returning to the majors.

Preview: Rockies at Athletics

GAME: Colorado Rockies (33-43) at Oakland Athletics (35-44)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: O.co Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: 183, -200 TOTAL: 7

It is unlikely that Oakland gets involved in the pennant race this season, but defeating sub.-500 teams such as Colorado at home is a must as the Athletics try to make it two straight over the Rockies on Tuesday in the middle contest of their three-game series. Oakland snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory Monday and may have also gotten two slumping players going as Josh Reddick and Billy Butler each delivered home runs.

Butler is hitting .233 in June after going 3-for-4 as he appears to have avoided his worst month batting average-wise since hitting .221 in July 2008, while Reddick was mired in a 7-for-37 skid over his last nine games before belting his 11th home run and first in 15 contests. While the last-place Athletics (35-44) are 10 games behind Houston in the American League West, Colorado (33-43) sits in the NL West basement — nine games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers — while riding a three-game losing streak. The Rockies, though, have a pair of hot hitters in Nolan Arenado, the reigning NL Player of the Week who has a 16-game hitting streak — the longest in baseball — and Troy Tulowitzki, who has hit in 13 straight. Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa left his last start with a cut on his left middle finger but appears ready to go and opposes Sonny Gray, who has yielded three or more runs in consecutive turns for the first time in 2015 but still owns the lowest ERA in the AL.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT (Colorado), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Jorge De La Rosa (4-3, 5.15 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (9-3, 2.09)

De La Rosa allowed one run, four hits and three walks in five innings before being lifted and earning a no-decision in Colorado's 6-4 victory over Arizona on Thursday. "I thought his (next) start would be in jeopardy," Colorado manager Walt Weiss told reporters about the 34-year-old Mexican, who has dealt with the finger cut and a groin injury for much of the season. "It looks like it closed up in time." De La Rosa is 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA in three road starts this season.

Gray permitted three runs and nine hits in six innings of a 6-3 victory at Texas on Thursday after yielding a season-high six runs (five earned), five hits and three walks in six innings before escaping with a no-decision in a 12-7 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on June 19. The 25-year-old Tennessee native, a strong candidate to be the American League starter in next month's All-Star Game, is 5-1 in his last seven starts and recorded a 1.40 ERA in the five turns preceeding his last two. Gray, who has never faced the Rockies, holds left-handed hitters to a .206 batting average and righties to .204.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics CF Billy Burns on Monday went 0-for-4 to snap his 16-game hitting streak — one shy of the Oakland rookie record set by Mike Edwards (1978), Luis Polonia (1987) and Terrence Long (2000).

2. Arenado, who leads the majors with 68 RBIs, is batting .371 with nine home runs and 21 RBIs during his hitting streak.

3. Tulowitzki on Monday set a career high by reaching base for the 28th consecutive contest.

GAME: New York Yankees (41-36) at Los Angeles Angels (40-37)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: 118, -128 TOTAL: 8

Mike Trout was an all-around standout in the series opener and looks to inflict further damage when the Los Angeles Angels host the New York Yankees in Tuesday's middle contest of a three-game series. Trout homered and twice robbed New York's Chris Young of extra-base hits with his glove work to help Los Angeles post a 4-1 victory for its fifth win in the last seven games.

The homer was Trout's 20th of the season and it made him the sixth American Leaguer to post four 20-plus homer campaigns before his age-24 season, joining Ted Williams (1939-42), Mickey Mantle (1952-55), Tony Conigliaro (1964-67), Ken Griffey Jr. (1990-93) and Alex Rodriguez (1996-99). Trout has three hits against the Yankees this season, and each has been a solo homer. New York center fielder Brett Gardner — named AL Player of the Week on Monday — went 3-for-5 in the series opener and is 26-for-54 with four homers over his past 12 games. "I think he's become a complete player," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters. "He's not just a leadoff hitter who plays good defense. He's a guy who drives in runs and does a lot of different things for your offense."

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, YES (New York), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Ivan Nova (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Angels LH Andrew Heaney (0-0, 1.50)

Nova excelled against Philadelphia in his first start since undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery 14 months ago. He allowed three hits and two walks in 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Phillies and only struck out one, though his fastball was clocked as high as 95 mph. Nova is 4-2 with a 5.45 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.

Heaney is making his second start for the Angels and is filling the rotation spot of injured Jered Weaver. He received a no-decision against Houston in his Los Angeles debut Wednesday as he allowed one run and four hits in six innings. Heaney went 0-3 with a 5.83 ERA in seven appearances (five starts) for Miami last season and was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and then sent to the Angels in a span of five minutes during baseball's winter meetings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees RF Carlos Beltran had two hits in the opener and is 12-for-33 over his last nine games.

2. Angels 1B Albert Pujols is homerless in his past six games and has slugged 12 in June — one shy of the franchise mark for homers in any month shared by Tim Salmon (June 1996) and Mo Vaughn (May 2000).

3. New York 3B Chase Headley was hitless in four at-bats Monday and is 2-for-20 over the last five contests.

Preview: Mariners at Padres

GAME: Seattle Mariners (34-42) at San Diego Padres (37-41)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 30 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: 106, -115 TOTAL: 7

The Seattle Mariners hope to begin turning their disappointing season around when they visit the scuffling San Diego Padres on Tuesday in the first of a two-game interleague series. The Mariners, expected to be in the hunt for an American League playoff spot, have dropped five of their last seven to fall a season-high eight games under .500.

Robinson Cano is having a rough campaign (.241, four homers, 24 RBIs, 73 games) and slugger Nelson Cruz, who got off to sizzling start, has one homer in the last 28 games for Seattle. The Padres split a pair of games at Seattle on May 12-13, but are just 7-12 since being one game over .500 on June 8. Justin Upton (14 homers, 46 RBIs) and Derek Norris (11 homers, 45 RBIs) have led San Diego throughout and Matt Kemp is 7-for-16 with a pair of homers and five RBIs in his last four games. Despite their struggles, the Padres are only 6 1/2 games out in the National League West.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET; ROOT (Seattle) FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Mike Montgomery (2-2, 2.04 ERA) vs. Padres RH Ian Kennedy (4-6, 5.09)

Montgomery comes in off his first career shutout, limiting the Kansas City Royals to five hits while striking out a career-high 10 in 105 pitches. The former first-round pick of the Royals has allowed two or fewer runs in four of his first five major league starts, yielding four in his only outing against a National League team (San Francisco). Montgomery walked eight in his first four turns and did not issue a free pass last Tuesday.

Kennedy is 2-1 over his last five starts while surrendering only eight earned runs combined over 30 innings during that span. The former New York Yankees first-round pick permitted five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings during his only career meeting with Seattle in an 11-4 loss on May 12. Logan Morrison is 4-for-11 with a pair of homers versus Kennedy, who has allowed 15 blasts in 13 starts – one in each of the last three.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres 3B Will Middlebrooks, who is 4-for-28 his last nine games, suffered an ankle injury Sunday and is considered day-to-day.

2. Seattle RHP Fernando Rodney is turning his season around after permitting only two hits over seven straight scoreless outings.

3. San Diego SS Clint Barmes is 9-for-23 with six doubles in his last eight contests.

MLB roundup: Indians rookie dominates Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Cleveland rookie right-hander Cody Anderson took a perfect game into the seventh inning, and the Indians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-1 with a combined three-hitter Monday at Tropicana Field.

Anderson (1-0) earned his first major league victory by throwing eight innings of two-hit, one-run ball. The 24-year-old, who dominated Tampa Bay in his debut June 21, retired the first 19 batters in order before designated hitter Grady Sizemore -- in just his second game with the Rays -- hit a solo home run to right field in the seventh inning.

Anderson struck out two and didn't walk a batter.

Jason Kipnis, Michael Brantley and Yan Gomes each had three hits for Cleveland, including a homer by Gomes.

Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO -- Clay Buchholz pitched eight strong innings, and Xander Bogaerts drove in two runs as Boston defeated Toronto.

Buchholz (6-6) allowed five hits, no walks and one run while striking out five to earn his fourth win in a row over six starts. Koji Uehara pitched the ninth to earn his 17th save of the season.

By winning the opener of the four-game series, Buchholz improved his career record at Rogers Centre to 10-3. He entered the game with a 2.30 earned-run average in 14 starts there.

Rangers 8, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE -- Mitch Moreland hit two of Texas' four home runs, and the Rangers cooled down Baltimore.

Carlos Corporan and Shin-Soo Choo also went deep for Texas, which tied a season high for homers in a game. The Rangers snapped Baltimore's four-game winning streak.

Staked with an early lead, Wandy Rodriguez (5-3) kept the Orioles off balance for most of his outing. The left-hander allowed one run on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over five-plus innings.

Brewers 7, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- In a clash of the two worst teams in the major leagues, Milwaukee took the opener of a four-game series against Philadelphia.

The Brewers erased a 4-1 deficit by slugging a season-high-tying 16 hits en route to their fifth win in seven games. The Phillies scored early but went silent to slip to 24 games below .500, tying their season-worst mark.

Jonathan Lucroy led the Milwaukee surge, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Ryan Braun went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Reds 11, Twins 7

CINCINNATI -- Billy Hamilton reached base four times, recorded four steals to reach 40 for the season, and scored three times, sparking Cincinnati to a victory over Minnesota.

Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota, which trailed 9-1 after three innings but scored six times in the fourth to get within two.

Reds relievers Nate Adcock, Manny Parra and Aroldis Chapman combined for five scoreless innings to stave off the Twins' comeback attempt. Adcock (1-0) earned his first National League win and first major league victory since 2011.

Astros 6, Royals 1

HOUSTON -- Lance McCullers capped a stellar month with seven strong innings, and Houston added to its major-league-leading total of multi-homer games in a victory over Kansas.

McCullers (4-2) gave up one run on four hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts, retiring 11 of 12 batters during one key stretch. He closed June with a 2.11 ERA, the lowest ERA in June by an Astros rookie since right-hander Darryl Kyle posted a 1.80 ERA in 1990.

Jose Altuve and Chris Carter homered for Houston.

A's 7, Rockies 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Josh Reddick, Ike Davis and Billy Butler homered, and rookie Kendall Graveman threw seven shutout innings, leading Oakland past Colorado.

The A's were homerless in their previous four games before erupting for three home runs against Colorado and ending their three-game losing streak.

Reddick and Davis hit two-run blasts in the first inning, and Butler added a solo shot in the fourth. Butler also doubled and finished with three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Davis added a double, and Stephen Vogt had two hits and scored a run.

Angels 4, Yankees 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout homered, stole a base and made a couple of highlight-reel catches in center field to lead Los Angeles to a win over New York.

C.J. Wilson (6-6) went six strong innings to get the win, giving up one run and five hits, then getting stellar support from the bullpen. Trevor Gott (seventh inning), Joe Smith (eighth) and Huston Street (ninth, 22nd save) finished off the Yankees over the final three frames.

Trout homered (No. 20) in the third inning off CC Sabathia (3-8), then saved at least one run with a running catch in left-center off a drive hit by Chris Young in the fifth. He made another running catch on Chase Headley's drive to right-center in the sixth.

Diamondbacks 10, Dodgers 6

PHOENIX -- Welington Castillo doubled home the tiebreaking run, and Paul Goldschmidt added a two-run single in a four-run eighth inning as Arizona rallied to beat Los Angeles.

Nick Ahmed and Yasmany Tomas hit two-run homers for the Diamondbacks, who scored 10 runs in the final four innings to overcome a 4-0 deficit. Arizona managed only three singles off Los Angeles starter Mike Bolsinger, who left for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Jake Lamb drew a walk from right-hander Pedro Baez (1-1) to open the eighth inning before Castillo doubled for a 7-6 lead. Castillo scored on a throwing error by Baez after Chris Owings' bunt single, and Goldschmidt finished the inning with a two-run single.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Dodgers overrated away from home

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

Dodgers Overrated On The Road

What do the Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's all have in common? Well in addition to the fact that all four teams rank among the worst in the major leagues, all four clubs have a better road record than the LA Dodgers. That's right folks, the mighty Dodgers are just 16-22 on the road this season. That hasn't stopped the Bookmakers from routinely making them the favorite, and that is the case here again in Arizona (-117 on Tuesday).

Mad Max as the Road Warrior

Max Scherzer is the hottest hurler in the majors at the moment, coming off three very impressive wins. He tossed a complete game no hitter against the Brewers on June 14, and followed up with a no-hitter (near perfect game) against the Pirates six days later. His last start was another good one in a win at Philadelphia, and he'll be on the road in Atlanta on Thursday in pursuit of his 10th win of the season.

Home Run Race Heating Up

Giancarlo Stanton is still out in front, and he was the favorite to run away with it, but he's now sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. Colorado's Nolan Arenado is all of a sudden right in the thick of things with seven home runs in the last week. He's got 24 for the season, tied with Bryce Harper, while Cincinnati's Todd Frazier has 25, two fewer than the leader Stanton.

Pitching Notes

*Matt Cain is scheduled to make his season debut for the Giants on Thursday in Miami, but the big news will be who starts on the mound for the Marlins in that game. Miami ace Jose Fernandez is set to make is 2015 debut for the Marlins, despite allowing four runs on six hits in a rehab assignment in Triple-A.

*Johnny Cueto is having another fine season, and he'll start at home in a matinee against the Twins on Wednesday. There might not be a better bet than Cueto at home during the day. He's 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA at home this season, and 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA during the day. Going back to 2012, he's 25-7 at home with a 2.13 ERA, and 25-4 with a 1.78 ERA in day games.

Hitting Notes

*Robinson Cano has been having a disappointing season for the Mariners, but he might have a favorable matchup to look forward to on Wednesday against San Diego. The 32 year old is hitting .402 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 87 career at bats versus Shields.

*Yanel Escobar is hitting .349 with a pair of home runs and 13 RBIs in the month of June, and he's really picked up the slack for the Nats who have been missing a couple of their best hitters. With Ryan Zimmerman and Jason Werth sidelined by injuries, the Nats haven't missed a beat, winning eight of their last nine heading into Monday's game.

Weather Notes

* There is a 66 percent chance of thunderstorms in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Texas Rangers at Camden Yards Tuesday.

* Early forecasts for Wednesday predict a 54 percent chance of thunderstorms at Turner Field when the Atlanta Braves host the Washington Nationals.

Umpire Trends

* The Under has gone 4-1 in the last five games Will Little has worked behind home plate. He'll be working the plate in Toronto when the Jays host the Red Sox Tuesday.

* Over bets have cashed the last four times Bob Davidson has called pitches. He'll be behind the dish in Cincinnati when the Minnesota Twins visit the Reds in interleague action Wednesday.

Totals Streak

New York Yankees (8-4 O/U): The Yankees have been involved in quite a few slugfests lately, and they've been on the wrong side of quite a few of those. The fact that Michael Pineda, C.C. Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka have all been roughed up in the past week is cause for concern in New York. The Yankees are 41-32 O/U for the season, and they've scored a major league best 271 runs in night games.

Injury Notes

*Giancarlo Stanton leads the majors in home runs (27), and RBIs (67). He's going to be out for 4-6 weeks after having surgery to repair a broken bone in his hand. That's a huge blow for a Miami team that ranks near the bottom of the major leagues in scoring, and sits 11.5 games back of Washington in the NL East.

*Tim Lincecum might have been in danger of losing spot in the rotation anyway, but that decision may be a lot easier for Bruce Bochy if the former Cy Young winner is placed on the DL for the first time in his career. The right-hander was hit in the arm by a line drive in the second inning against Colorado on Saturday.

ATLANTA BRAVES – OVER 3 RUNS (@BOL)

Nats SP has been MUCH better when he takes the ball at HOME. These Braves also just saw him last week, and this is the 4th time this season that he faced these Braves. A few key Braves have had success vs Zimmerman and we also have a nice weather pattern for this game tonight. A warm evening with temps in the low 80’s and some wind blowing straight out at 10MPH as well. I fully expect these Braves to plate at least 3 runs before all the dust settles & we’ll just see what happens here……

Whoever said Petco Park is favorable to pitchers should not talk to San Diego Padres starter Ian Kennedy. The righty heads into Tuesday's action with a personal 2-3 record and 6.82 ERA in seven starts this season.

For the sake of comparison, the 30-year-old is 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA in six road starts on the season.

Kennedy's home ERA ranks as the fourth-worst in the National League for hurlers with at least three starts in their home ball park. Only Erick Stults (7.33), Mat Latos (7.60) and Kyle Lohse (8.16) have a worse ERA in front of their home fans.

Kennedy will give it another shot for the Friars versus the Seattle Mariners Tuesday evening. Oddsmakers have the Padres as -120 home faves for the matchup.
