Preview: Athletics at Angels

GAME: Oakland Athletics (47-60) at Los Angeles Angels (49-58)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 04 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Oakland Athletics hope to avoid being swept of a second straight series when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday for the finale of their three-game set. Oakland got off to a good start on its nine-game road trip, winning two of three at Texas, but lost all three contests in Cleveland and dropped its first two contests against the Angels, including an 8-6 decision Wednesday.

Yonder Alonso is heating up for the Athletics, going 2-for-4 in each of his last three games and notching at least one hit in five of his last six. Los Angeles improved to 4-2 on its seven-game homestand and used the long ball to do it, belting three home runs — including a walk-off, two-run blast by Albert Pujols in the ninth inning. The veteran slugger finished with three RBI and went 3-for-5, giving him four multi-hit performances in the past six games. Jefry Marte homered for the second straight day to extend his hitting streak to six games and has knocked in a run in four consecutive contests.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Jesse Hahn (2-4, 5.53 ERA) vs. Angels RH Ricky Nolasco (4-8, 5.13)

Hahn is expected to be recalled from Triple-A to make his ninth start of the season and first since July 24, when he settled for a no-decision against Tampa Bay after allowing just one run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old native of Connecticut has posted a 1-6 record with a 3.66 ERA in 13 starts for Nashville this year. Hahn has made two career starts against the Angels, going 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA and 10 strikeouts over 12 2/3 frames.

Nolasco will make his debut with Los Angeles after being acquired from Minnesota prior to Monday's trade deadline. The 33-year-old Californian went 0-1 over his final three starts for the Twins despite allowing just one run in two of the outings. Nolasco fell to 2-1 with one shutout and a 3.33 ERA in four career turns versus Oakland on July 4, when he yielded three runs on four hits and three walks over six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pujols is tied with Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson and Jimmie Foxx for second place with 12 career walk-off home runs — one behind all-time leader Jim Thome.

2. Oakland 2B Jed Lowrie went 1-for-3 with an RBI on Wednesday despite being bothered by a sore left foot.

3. Los Angeles announced RHP Nick Tropeano will undergo Tommy John surgery and likely will not return until 2018.

Preview: Mets at Yankees

GAME: New York Mets (55-52) at New York Yankees (54-53)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 04 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets are the team that declared itself still in the playoff race with its trade deadline moves while the crosstown rival New York Yankees threw up the white flag. So far it’s the Yankees that look playoff bound, and they will try to complete a sweep of their home portion of the home-and-home, four-game interleague series when they host the Mets in the finale on Thursday.

Mark Teixeira is one of the veterans that remained on the Yankees roster after Monday’s trade deadline, and he showed some flashes of his former All-Star form with a three-run home that put his team ahead in the second inning on Wednesday. Teixeira was hit by a pitch in his next at-bat, sparking a benches-clearing brawl and adding some excitement to a Subway Series that lost its luster when the Yankees decided to give up on chasing the playoffs in 2016. The Mets picked up Jay Bruce at the deadline in one of the bigger moves across the league but has yet to get anything positive from the veteran at the plate. Bruce is 0-for-8 with three strikeouts in his first two games with his new team.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SNY (Mets), WPIX (Yankees)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Bartolo Colon (9-6, 3.58 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Nathan Eovaldi (9-7, 4.78)

Colon sandwiched a pair of sub-par efforts around a dominating performance against the St. Louis Cardinals in a win on July 26. The Mets asked the 43-year-old to go on short rest against Colorado on Saturday and he struggled, surrendering five runs in as many innings in a loss. Colon is making his fourth appearance – third start - against an American League club this season and allowed a total of two runs in seven innings against the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals.

Eovaldi has been strong in three starts since returning to the rotation, allowing a total of six runs in 18 innings while going 2-1. The lone loss in that span came at Tampa Bay on Saturday, when he surrendered two home runs among three hits in six innings. Eovaldi began his career in the National League and has made eight career starts against the Mets, building a 1-3 record with a 4.98 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees C prospect Gary Sanchez recorded his first major-league hit on Wednesday.

2. Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes (quad) served as the DH on Wednesday and went 1-for-5 with a single but tweaked the injury in his final at-bat and will be placed on the disabled list.

3. Mets 1B Lucas Duda (back) experienced a setback in his rehab and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

Preview: Rangers at Orioles

GAME: Texas Rangers (62-46) at Baltimore Orioles (61-45)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 04 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The offense that looked so improved when the Texas Rangers emerged from the trade deadline has been held in check by the Baltimore Orioles, who could not manage to find a top-of-the-rotation arm they desired earlier in the week. The Rangers will try to unleash that offense and avoid a sweep when they visit the Orioles in the finale of the three-game series on Thursday.

The Rangers were in the market for arms and instead added Carlos Beltran and Jonathan Lucroy to an already potent offense on Monday, but have managed three runs in two games with the two All-Stars in the lineup. Beltran hit a solo home run in the first inning on Wednesday and Lucroy singled in a run in the second, but Texas could not muster anything else in the 3-2 setback. The Orioles were thought to need major upgrades to the pitching staff in order to hold off the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox in the American League East but have surrendered a total of five runs in winning three straight. The one upgrade Baltimore managed was to import lefty Wade Miley, who will make his team debut in Thursday’s series finale.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH A.J. Griffin (4-1, 3.99 ERA) vs. Orioles LH Wade Miley (7-8, 4.98)

Griffin is making his eighth start since coming off the disabled list on June 25 and has yet to complete six innings in that span. The 28-year-old earned his first win since coming off the DL against Kansas City on Friday, when he allowed two runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings. Griffin is making his second career start against Baltimore and is 1-0 with a 3.96 ERA in eight road starts this season.

Miley came over in a trade from the Seattle Mariners before the deadline and is returning to the American League East, where he worked as a member of the Boston Red Sox rotation last season. The Louisiana native closed the Seattle chapter of his career by snapping a six-start losing streak and holding the Chicago Cubs to one run and one hit while striking out nine in seven innings on Saturday. Miley has already seen Texas three times this season and is 0-2 with a 7.41 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Orioles own the best home record in the majors at 39-16.

2. Texas OF Shin-Soo Choo (back) could come off the DL on Thursday.

3. Orioles OF/1B Steve Pearce went 0-for-2 in his return to the team on Wednesday.

Preview: Pirates at Braves

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (53-52) at Atlanta Braves (38-69)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 04 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The road back from one of the most frightening plays in baseball this season brings Ryan Vogelsong to the mound Thursday for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series at the Atlanta Braves. The 12-year veteran has not appeared in the majors since a pitch struck him in the left eye May 23, an injury that he initially feared would not merely end his career but cost him his sight.

But Vogelsong returns at just the right time for the Pirates, who lost 8-4 on Wednesday and have dropped five of their past seven games as they try to move up into contention in the National League wild-card race. Center fielder Andrew McCutchen, hitting a career-low .241 and mired in an 8-for-46 slump, did not appear for a second consecutive game as reports surfaced Pirates manager Clint Hurdle does not plan to play him at all in the series. The Braves have won five of their past eight and totally shut down the Pirates after allowing four first-inning runs Wednesday. Center fielder Ender Inciarte continues to swing a hot bat, extending his hitting streak to 14 games Wednesday after going 3-for-4, while batting .373 since the All-Star break.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ryan Vogelsong (1-1, 3.74 ERA) vs. Braves RH Tyrell Jenkins (1-2, 4.91)

The 39-year-old Vogelsong made four rehab starts – two each at Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis – going 1-2 with a 2.86 ERA while allowing four homers in 22 innings. He pitched mostly in long relief for the Pirates before the injury, making 10 relief appearances with two starts and going more than two innings just once. Vogelsong faced the Braves in his last appearance before the injury, giving up three runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief May 17.

Jenkins rebounded from a rough outing for his first major-league victory Friday, an outstanding performance in which he held Philadelphia to one unearned run on four hits in six innings -- pitching around four walks in a 2-1 victory. The 24-year-old rookie gave up seven runs in his previous outing at Colorado, but in his other three starts he has surrendered only three earned runs in 16 2/3 innings. Walks continue to be a problem for Jenkins, who has issued 14 in his four starts and 20 free passes against 15 strikeouts in eight appearances overall.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta SS Erick Aybar brings a nine-game hitting streak into Thursday, batting .483 during that stretch after going 3-for-4 Wednesday.

2. Pittsburgh OF Starling Marte stole his 150th career base in the fifth inning Wednesday, giving him 37 steals for the season.

3. The Braves collected 15 hits Wednesday, just the fifth time this season they have recorded as many in a game and the third time since July 8.

Preview: Blue Jays at Astros

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (61-47) at Houston Astros (56-51)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 04 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

J.A. Happ looks to win his ninth consecutive decision when the Toronto Blue Jays conclude their four-game set against the host Houston Astros on Thursday. Happ has allowed a total of two runs in his last four victories and has set a career high with an American League-leading 14 victories.

Toronto won two of the first three games of the series, including a 3-1 victory on Wednesday in which Josh Donaldson homered twice and Jose Bautista went deep once. Troy Tulowitzki has yet to appear in the series due to a chip fracture in his right thumb and is questionable to play in the finale. Toronto is one game behind first-place Baltimore in the AL East and possesses the first wild card, while Houston has dropped five of its last six contests and sits three games behind Detroit for the second wild-card spot. The Astros have scored just four runs in the series and have touched home plate just six times in the last five contests.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (14-3, 3.16 ERA) vs. Astros RH Mike Fiers (7-4, 4.42)

Happ has posted a 2.60 ERA during a nine-start unbeaten streak in which he has allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of the outings. He defeated Baltimore in his last turn, when he gave up one run and three hits in seven innings and matched his career high with 11 strikeouts. Happ is 3-1 with a 3.50 ERA in six career starts against the Astros and has shut down Jose Altuve (1-for-9).

Fiers received a no-decision in his last turn despite allowing just one unearned run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings against Detroit. He has won four of his last five decisions and has given up two or fewer earned runs in five of his last eight outings. Fiers is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two career appearances (one start) against Toronto.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros LF Colby Rasmus is hitless in 13 at-bats in the series and is just 2-for-55 over his last 14 games.

2. Toronto OF Michael Saunders is 3-for-27 with 16 strikeouts over his last seven contests.

3. Houston RHP Lance McCullers (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list one day after leaving Tuesday's start with discomfort and RHP Brad Peacock was recalled from Triple-A Fresno.

Preview: Dodgers at Rockies

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (59-48) at Colorado Rockies (54-53)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 04 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies have climbed over .500 for the first time since May 18 and quickly are becoming a realistic contender for a playoff spot with a 14-5 record since the All-Star break. The Rockies, winners of six straight at home, look to continue their surge and complete a three-game sweep when they host the scuffling Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

Colorado registered 17 hits on Wednesday in a 12-2 victory as Carlos Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 15 games with two homers before leaving with an ankle injury and rookie David Dahl hit safely for the ninth straight contest to start his career. Tyler Chatwood gets the start for the Rockies, who trail St. Louis by three games for the second National League wild-card spot. Kenta Maeda faces Colorado for the third time in 22 career starts for the Dodgers, who have dropped four of their last six and are a mediocre 8-8 since the All-Star break. Justin Turner is red hot for Los Angeles, going 7-for-16 with four doubles, a homer and five RBIs in his last four games.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (9-7, 3.23 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (10-6, 3.50)

Maeda allowed two hits in six scoreless innings before being charged with two runs while retiring one batter in the seventh as Los Angeles survived Arizona's seven-run frame to prevail 9-7 on Friday. The 28-year-old native of Japan, who is 6-2 on the road, has recorded 120 strikeouts in 120 innings. Maeda split two outings against Colorado, prevailing 4-1 at Coors Field on April 23 after yielding three hits and striking out eight in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

Chatwood rebounded from a rough start just after the All-Star break to post two straight victories, allowing one run and four hits over a total of 12 innings. The 26-year-old California native has struggled with control at times this season, though, issuing 50 walks – 12 in his last two games. Chatwood, who is 1-1 in two starts versus the Dodgers this season with a .171 batting average against, is 4-6 at home while rolling to a 6-0 record on the road.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles 1B Adrian Gonzalez needs one home run to become the seventh active player with 300 blasts and 400 doubles.

2. The Rockies’ starting pitchers are 10-0 with a 2.00 ERA in the last 13 games.

3. Dodgers INF-OF Howie Kendrick went 0-for-4 on Wednesday but is batting .327 since July 1.

Preview: Red Sox at Mariners

GAME: Boston Red Sox (58-48) at Seattle Mariners (54-52)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 04 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Boston first baseman Hanley Ramirez will miss his second consecutive game with a sprained left wrist when the Red Sox conclude a four-game series against the host Seattle Mariners on Thursday. Ramirez slipped and fell on stairs just after Tuesday's game concluded and an MRI exam performed Wednesday detected no structural damage.

Boston manager John Farrell called the injury "an unfortunate thing where he lost his footing" and termed Ramirez's absence as day to day. "I would expect it to be a couple of days at least," Farrell told reporters. "He went down in there pretty hard. Broke his fall with reaching back but we wanted to be sure we did a full exam that included all that imaging before we made any comment." Seattle has won the last two games after losing the series opener and the consecutive losses have dropped the Red Sox three games behind the first-place Baltimore Orioles in the American League and a half-game behind the Detroit Tigers for the second wild card. Seattle is 4 1/2 games behind the Tigers and hoping to gain ground during a 10-game homestand that includes three games apiece against the Los Angeles Angels and the Tigers.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (8-9, 3.09 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Ariel Miranda (0-0, 13.50)

Pomeranz is 0-2 with a 7.53 ERA in three starts since being acquired from the San Diego Padres. The National League All-Star has struggled in his return to the AL and has allowed 18 hits — including four homers — and six walks in just 14 1/3 innings. Pomeranz is 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in 11 career appearances (two starts) against the Mariners.

Miranda will be making his Seattle debut and first big-league starter after being acquired from Baltimore for left-hander Wade Miley on Sunday. The 27-year-old Cuban appeared in one major-league game for the Orioles — he gave up three runs and four hits against Seattle on July 2 — but the Mariners believe he is ready for a bigger role. "He threw seven shutout innings Friday night for the Orioles' Triple-A club," Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto told reporters. "We'll see where we go from there with Ariel."

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners RF/DH Nelson Cruz is 1-for-10 in the series — the hit being his 27th homer of the season during Wednesday's game.

2. Boston RF Mookie Betts was named AL Player of the Month for July after recording 11 multihit outings while batting .368 with five homers and 15 RBIs.

3. Seattle C Mike Zunino is 3-for-6 with two homers in the series and has gone deep five times in 35 at-bats since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
