MLB roundup: Verlander outduels Archer, Tigers beat Rays
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Detroit's Justin Verlander outdueled Tampa Bay Rays' Chris Archer and the Tigers scored two unearned runs, avoiding a sweep with a 2-1 win Wednesday.

Detroit took advantage in the seventh of two misplays by Rays shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera -- an error on what could have been an inning-ending double play, then a two-out line drive from Nick Castellanos that went off Cabrera's glove for an RBI single.

Verlander (1-3) struck out 10 batters and walked none in eight innings for his first win in eight starts this season. Archer struck out 11 but was doomed by a 32-pitch seventh inning in which his defense didn't help him. Tigers closer Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless ninth for his 23rd save.

Both pitchers took perfect games into the fifth inning, with Archer striking out seven in the first four innings and Verlander fanning five. Archer's perfect game was broken up with one out in the seventh inning when Jose Iglesias got an infield single.

Indians 12, Royals 1

CLEVELAND -- Corey Kluber came within two outs of his first career shutout and Cleveland hit three home runs in a six-run sixth inning against Kansas City.

The Indians banged out a season-high 18 hits, including four home runs in snapping their six-game losing streak and the Royals' four-game winning streak.

The right-handed Kluber (6-11) pitched a five-hit complete game, with six strikeouts and one walk. Right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (7-7) and gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings for the Royals.

Pirates 10, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- A five-run sixth inning busted open a tie game as Pittsburgh completed a two-game sweep of Minnesota.

Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer for Pittsburgh, which has won three straight games.

The Twins have lost four consecutive games and are 3-7 since returning from the All-Star break.

Cubs 3, Rockies 2

CHICAGO -- Jon Lester struck out a season-high 14 in eight innings to lead Chicago over Colorado.

Anthony Rizzo and Dexter Fowler each hit a home run. Lester (6-8) allowed two runs, five hits and one walk in his longest outing the season.

Carlos Gonzalez, a subject of trade talks, hit his 21st home run (his eighth in the last seven games) for the Rockies.

Diamondbacks 8, Mariners 2

SEATTLE -- Welington Castillo hit two home runs and Arizona pounded Seattle starter Felix Hernandez on the way to its fifth straight win.

Patrick Corbin (2-3) outdueled Hernandez (12-6), giving up one run and three hits in six innings. Arizona rocked Hernandez for 12 hits and seven runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Arizona has won six of its last seven and posted its first sweep since June 13-15.

Giants 5, Brewers 0

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ehire Adrianza delivered a two-run single in a five-run seventh inning as the Giants won for the 10th time in 12 games since the All-Star break.

Right-hander Jake Peavy and three relievers combined on a six-hitter, holding the Brewers to two runs or fewer for the fifth time on their just-completed, seven-game trip. The shutout loss was Milwaukee's third on the trip and 12th this season.

Brewers starter Mike Fiers, who had allowed two or fewer runs in four of his previous six starts, took a two-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh in a 0-0 game but didn't retire another batter.

Nationals 7, Marlins 2

MIAMI -- Bryce Harper hit a three-run, tiebreaking home run and added a second upper-deck blast, leading Washington to a win over Miami at Marlins Park.

Harper, who drove in four runs, has 29 homers this season. Michael Taylor hit a solo homer in the eighth.

The game-winning homer, in the fifth inning, was Harper's fourth this season off Marlins right-hander Tom Koehler. Three of those four homers were hit to the upper deck in right field, including the one Wednesday.

Blue Jays 8, Phillies 2

TORONTO -- Troy Tulowitzki homered and had two doubles and three RBIs in a victory over Philadelphia in his debut with Toronto. The new Blue Jays shortstop was acquired in a six-player trade that sent shortstop Jose Reyes to Colorado on Tuesday.

Toronto right-hander R.A. Dickey (5-10) allowed seven hits and two unearned runs in eight innings for his second straight win.

The Phillies' five-game winning streak ended. Philadelphia is 9-2 since the All-Star break.

Phillies right-hander Jerome Williams (3-8) allowed 10 hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Orioles 2, Braves 0

BALTIMORE -- Right-hander Chris Tillman extended his winning streak to six games and Baltimore got a pair of homers from Jonathan Schoop and J.J. Hardy to complete a three-game sweep of Atlanta.

The Orioles are two games above .500 for the first time since July 10. They have also won five straight -- their longest winning streak since June 7-13. The Braves lost 10 of 11 on the road and are a season-high nine games under .500.

Tillman came within one-out of a complete-game shutout. He was pulled after allowing a double to Cameron Maybin. Tillman allowed just four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. He has not lost since May 31.

Padres 7, Mets 3

NEW YORK -- Justin Upton had two hits, including a solo homer, and three RBIs, when San Diego scored two runs apiece in the first, second and third innings on their way to a win over New York at Citi Field.

Yangervis Solarte tied a career high with four hits while scoring two runs and collecting an RBI for the Padres, who also received two hits each from Wil Venable, Yonder Alonso, Jedd Gyorko and Austin Hedges. Yonder Alonso hit a solo homer and Matt Kemp had an RBI single.

Lucas Duda hit three solo homers for the Mets.

Reds 1, Cardinals 0

ST. LOUIS -- For Cincinnati it was a rare series win under the Gateway Arch. For St. Louis, it was two losses in one.

Rookie right-hander Anthony DeSclafani tossed seven shutout innings Wednesday night as Cincinnati took a 1-0 verdict at Busch Stadium to accomplish its fourth series win in St. Louis since 2003.

The Reds supplied the only offense as Jay Bruce walloped a homer to start the second inning, his 17th home run of the year.

White Sox 9, Red Sox 2

BOSTON -- Adam Eaton led off the game with a home run, and Chicago cruised to a rout of floundering Boston for its seventh consecutive win on their current road trip.

Eaton, who had three hits, drove in another run, and Alexei Ramirez also homered to back a strong start by left-hander Jose Quintana.

Chicago climbed within a game of the .500 mark for the first time since May 22. The White Sox are just 2 1/2 games out of the second American League wild-card position.

Astros 6, Angels 3

HOUSTON -- Preston Tucker and Jon Singleton socked solo home runs and Lance McCullers worked seven strong innings as Houston claimed a win over Los Angeles at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros reclaimed first place in the American League West for the first time since a six-game losing streak leading into the All-Star Game break cost them their perch atop the division. Houston has hit multiple home runs in a game 42 times and is 37-5 in those contests.

Tucker bashed his 10th home run of the season into the home bullpen in right-center field to open the sixth inning. Singleton chased Angels right-hander Garrett Richards (10-8) with his first homer, also into the Astros bullpen, with one out in the seventh. Singleton added an RBI single as part of a two-run eighth inning that provided some insurance.

Rangers 5, Yankees 2

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas snapped a three-game skid behind a solid outing from starter Colby Lewis and Josh Hamilton's two RBIs.

Texas' victory over New York served as a mere backdrop to a blockbuster deal landing Philadelphia ace Cole Hamels. Word of the multiplayer trade began to circulate during the game and was widely reported by several media outlets. Hamels, signed through 2018, was acquired with next season and beyond in mind for a club with playoff aspirations this season.

The Yankees were coming off a 21-5 rout the previous night but had their four-game winning streak end. New York is still 4-2 on its current 10-game road trip and would take three in the four-game series with Texas with a win on Thursday night.

Dodgers 10, Athletics 7

LOS ANGELES -- Pinch-hitter Enrique Hernandez hit a go-ahead two-run double to spark a five-run rally in the seventh, and Los Angeles beat Oakland before 51,788 at Dodger Stadium.

Adrian Gonzalez lined a run-scoring double off the center-field wall and Yasmani Grandal had an RBI infield single in the seventh to pull Los Angeles within 6-5 before Hernandez ripped a two-bagger in the gap between left and center with two outs.

Yasiel Puig, who homered, added an RBI single in the seventh and Howie Kendrick drove in two more runs in the eighth for the Dodgers, who snapped a three-game losing streak and remained a half-game ahead of the San Francisco Giants for first place in the National League West.

Mariners 2B Cano out with abdominal strain
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano will sit out a couple of days with an abdominal strain, manager Lloyd McClendon said Wednesday.

The Grade 1 strain will keep Cano out for a game or two, and he then should serve as the team's designated hitter for a few days before returning to the field, McClendon said, according to The Seattle Times.

Cano was out of the lineup Wednesday as he underwent an MRI for the abdominal issue.

"He was trying to make a play a couple of days ago and he felt it," McClendon said before the Mariners lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks. "It's got a little worse; so, as a precaution, we will take an MRI today and wait on the doctors' results and go from there. Right now he is day-to-day.

"Robbie is stubborn," McClendon added, according to 710 ESPN Seattle. "His pain tolerance is so high he actually wanted to play again today, but the doctors said we need to get this looked at and make sure that there's nothing going on. If this was the seventh game of the World Series, Robbie could play and would want to play. But it is just the right thing to do."

Earlier this month, Cano told USA Today that he has been dealing with extreme acid reflux since last fall, when he took antiobiotics to kill a parasite that had caused stomach discomfort since August.

"It still affects me," Cano said. "Sometimes you drink water and it makes you feel like vomiting. I can't eat the same way I did. It's hard to deal with, especially being the first time this has happened to me. Sometimes I eat only once a day before playing, because I feel full. And you just don't have the same energy."

Cano is hitting a career-low .263, with 11 homers and just 42 RBIs.

Locke has struggled away from Pittsburgh
Justin Hartling

Jeff Locke takes to the mound away from PNC Park for the eighth time Friday and the Pittsburgh Pirates will look to improve on their 2-5 record in those games.

Locke has seen a huge decrease in effectiveness away from home with a 6.57 ERA on the road versus a 2.90 at home. Locke has struggled to find the zone too with a 29/16 strikeout/walks ratio on the road.

The Pirates will visit the Cincinnati Reds Thursday.

Braves' woeful offense has given Miller no help
Justin Hartling

The Atlanta Braves are 1-10 in their last 11 games when Shelby Miller takes the mound, which has very little to do with the right-handers pitching ability.

On the season Miller has posted a 2.27 ERA and has held opponents to one or fewer runs in seven of those 11 games. The Braves have given Miller an average of two runs of support during those starts.

Atlanta visits the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday.

Mets' Alderson: No trade for Brewers' Gomez
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

A widely reported trade that had the Milwaukee Brewers sending center fielder Carlos Gomez to the New York Mets did not happen Wednesday night, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said.

The Mets, looking to bolster their offense, apparently were set to acquire Gomez from the Brewers for infielder Wilmer Flores and pitcher Zack Wheeler, according to multiple reports.

"There is no trade. A grade has not and will not transpire," Alderson said without elaborating. "There's a tremendous amount of disappointment, to some extent anger, to some extent amazement."

USA Today reported that the Brewers had concerns about Wheeler's physical, but the team still plans to trade Gomez before the Friday deadline. Several other reports indicated that the deal fell through because of a hip issue with Gomez.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the trade was in place before medical information derailed the deal.

Wheeler, 25, is recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery he underwent March 25 after going 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA in 32 starts last year for the Mets. He began throwing for the first time this week.

As false rumors of a trade emerged, Flores was seen crying in the field during the eighth inning of the Mets-San Diego Padres game at Citi Field. Flores was believed to be weeping after getting news of a deal, and some questioned why he was left in the game, but Mets manager Terry Collins said there was no knowledge on the field about any deal.

"There was nothing I knew about,"Collins said. "Why would I take him out of the game?"

Flores apparently heard the reports.

"During the game, I heard there was a trade and I got emotional," he said.

The 29-year-old Gomez, who is signed through the 2016 season, is batting .262 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs in 73 games this year on the heels a 2014 season with 23 homers, 73 RBIs, a .284 average and 34 stolen bases.

Gomez signed with the Mets as a free agent in 2002 and played in 58 games for the team in 2007, batting .232 with two homers and 12 RBIs. He left for the Minnesota Twins in 2008 was part of a deal that brought pitcher Johan Santana to the Mets. Gomez was traded to the Brewers in 2009 and was named an All-Star in 2013 and 2014 and also won a Gold Glove in 2013.

Flores, 23, was batting .249 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in 92 games for the Mets this year. In parts of three seasons with the Mets, Flores has a .244 average and a .278 on-base percentage with 17 home runs and 82 RBIs in 197 career games.

Giants working phones for pitching help
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

SAN FRANCISCO -- Manager Bruce Bochy almost never addresses trade speculation or even his San Francisco Giants' potential needs.

So it was interesting, and perhaps newsworthy, when Bochy acknowledged before Wednesday's game that the Giants' front office was working the phones big-time with the trade deadline approaching Friday.

Rumors have linked the Giants to pretty much every big name on the market, especially the pitchers.

A dependable starter would seem to make the most sense. The Giants have a bunch of veteran question marks after left-hander Madison Bumgarner and rookie Chris Heston, and they still have at least one even if they imported someone new.

If the playoffs began Wednesday, the Giants would have been in the wild-card game for the second year in a row. Presuming Bumgarner were assigned to that game, it would have put the Giants in a position of pitching a rookie in the first game of a best-of-seven on the road, followed by one of their shaky veterans.

That prospect clearly has the Giants concerned enough to be working the phones.

Bochy also is the type who can never have too many relievers. No doubt, the prospect of landing an Aroldis Chapman-type closer intrigues him, because it would allow him to use right-handers Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla earlier in the game and thus lessen the pressure on the starting pitchers.

'Under Alert'

The Cardinals with the best pitching staff in the majors (2.63 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) head into Thursday's series opener vs Colorado with an Over/Under record of 37-60-4 on the season. Another positive for 'Under' gamblers, the Cardinals have Carlos Martinez toeing the rubber. In his last eleven starts, Martinez has shown he can keep the score low allowing just 1.09 runs/game posting 10 'Under' and 1 'Push'. Taking those numbers into account, there is still one more fact that leans towards 'Under'. Colorado has left-hander Christopher Rusin handling starting duties. The 'Under'

LA Angels Angels at Houston July 30, 8:10 EST

Houston Astros' lefty Scott Kazmir had a great start with his new club tossing 7 innings of shutout ball in a win over Kansas City. A few telling baseball betting stats leap out in this contest that suggest it may get tougher here. Halos are 8-0 in their last 8 games vs a left-handed starter and are 4-1 last five when facing Kazmir. The Houston hurler trades pitches with Matt Shoemaker which could be more bad news. Halos have been cash cows on the road with Shoemaker winning 15 of his 17 road starts.

Sportsbooks are offering Halos +$1.30 to +$1.45 depending on locale.

Five To Follow MLB Betting: Thursday, July 30, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

Maybe Friday's trade deadline day will be rather quiet! All the big names could be gone by then. There were two more deals Tuesday, with Kansas City acquiring Mr. Super Utility Ben Zobrist from Oakland for two minor-league pitchers. Zobrist will likely play left field (until Alex Gordon returns from injury) and second base with K.C. After adding Johnny Cueto, I think the Royals are done now as they have weakened their farm system but are clearly going all in. Washington beefed up its bullpen by getting All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon from the Phillies for a minor-league pitcher. Papelbon is expected to replace Drew Storen as Washington's closer as Papelbon wasn't going to approve a trade anywhere he couldn't close. The Nats have to pick up his 2016 option, but at a reduced cost of $11 million. Papelbon is 17-for-17 in saves with a 1.59 ERA.

Padres at Mets (-115, 7)

My nomination for stupidest major leaguer this season is Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia. He was suspended 162 games by MLB on Tuesday -- tying Alex Rodriguez for the longest ever -- after a second failed test for performing-enhancing drugs. Mejia missed the first 80 games of the season after his first suspension and had pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts since his return. So that trade for A's reliever Tyler Clippard looks much more important now for the Mets, who probably knew this suspension was coming. Both starting pitchers for this one reportedly are on the block. It's Andrew Cashner (4-10, 3.93) for San Diego. He was not good against the Mets on June 1, allowing six runs and 11 hits over just 4.2 innings. But Cashner has been better of late and hasn't allowed a homer since June 16. Juan Uribe is 8-for-23 with two RBIs career off him. It's lefty Jonathan Niese (5-9, 3.75) for the Mets. He was shelled for six runs and eight hits last time out vs. the Dodgers. That snapped a streak of eight straight quality starts. Justin Upton is a career .391 hitter off him. If Upton is still a Padre by game-time.

Key trends: The Padres are 1-6 in Cashner's past seven vs. teams with a winning record. The Mets are 1-4 in Niese's past five vs. teams with a losing record. The "over/under" has gone over in five straight Thursday starts by Cashner. The over is 5-1 in Niese's past six at home.

Early lean: Mets and under.

Nationals at Marlins (+140, 6.5)

We will see if Papelbon gets his first save opportunity here. Let's just say that Storen isn't happy about the deal because closers get paid more than set-up men. Max Scherzer (10-8, 2.33) takes the mound for Washington. He comes off a rare poor start, allowing five runs and seven hits over five innings against a Pirates team he no-hit earlier this season. His only start vs. Miami was on May 6, and he was knocked around for five runs and 10 hits over seven innings. Don't be shocked if Miami's Dan Haren (7-6, 3.51) either doesn't make this start or is pulled early from it as he's going to be traded, no doubt about it. His lone start this year against Washington was on April 26, and he allowed two runs and three hits over five innings. The Marlins dealt away fellow pitcher Mat Latos and first baseman/outfielder Michael Morse to the Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon.

Key trends: The Nats are 5-2 in Scherzer's past seven vs. NL East teams. The Marlins are 7-3 in Haren's past 10 at home. The under is 6-2 in Scherzer's past eight on the road. The over is 5-0-1 in Haren's past six vs. the NL East.

Early lean: Nationals and under.

White Sox at Red Sox (+154, 8)

Did you happen to see Tuesday night's White Sox-Red Sox game? Boston star rookie center fielder Mookie Betts made a great running catch of a ball hit by Chicago's Jose Abreu. Betts went tumbling over the short bullpen wall after making it, but when falling he dropped the ball. So on replay it went from an out to a homer. To make matters worse for the Red Sox, Betts likely suffered a concussion on the play and will go on the seven-day list. The surging Pale Hose might be going for a four-game sweep here depending on what happens Wednesday. And it's ace lefty Chris Sale (9-5, 2.85) on Thursday. It's the All-Star's first look at Boston this season. Betts actually was 2-for-3 career with two doubles off him, the best of any Red Sox. David Ortiz is 2-for-10 with two strikeouts. Boston goes with Steven Wright (3-4, 4.78). The knuckleballer allowed four runs in 4.1 innings last time out vs. Detroit. He has never faced the White Sox.

Key trends: The White Sox are 4-1 in Sale's past five road starts vs. teams with a losing record. Boston has lost four straight against left-handers. The under is 6-1 in Sale's past seven on Thursday.

Early lean: White Sox and under.

Yankees at Rangers (+130, 8.5)

Here's another guy who is reportedly on the market and could be dealt Thursday or Friday: the Rangers' Yovani Gallardo (7-9, 3.19). The Rangers like him, and he's a Dallas native, but will be a free agent after the season and Texas isn't going anywhere in 2015. Gallardo had been having a good season but has allowed exactly five runs in four innings in each of his past two starts. He beat the Yankees on May 24, allowing two runs over six innings. Chase Headley is 8-for-26 with a homer and nine walks career off him. A-Rod is 1-for-3. New York's Michael Pineda (9-7, 3.97) also hasn't been sharp in his past two, allowing nine runs and 14 hits over 11.2 innings, both losses. He lost against Texas on May 22, allowing seven runs in six innings. Mitch Moreland is 4-for-9 with two homers against Pineda.

Key trends: The Yankees are 8-2 in Pineda's past 10 with five days of rest. The Rangers are 6-1 in Gallardo's past seven vs. teams with a winning record. The over is 9-2 in Pineda's past 11 on the road. The under is 4-0 in Gallardo's past four at home.

Early lean: Rangers and over.

Angels at Astros (-137, 8)

The Halos got good news on Mike Trout's wrist Tuesday as an MRI came back negative, and he should be back in there as early as Wednesday. L.A. added two more outfielders on Tuesday as well in Cleveland's David Murphy and Tampa Bay's David DeJesus. That's on top of trading for Shane Victorino. Guess we are looking at platoon situations in left field and DH. Matt Shoemaker (5-7, 4.55) is on the mound here for Los Angeles. He comes off one of his best starts of the year back on July 21, shutting out the Twins on two hits over six innings while striking out 10. He allowed six runs in just three innings on May 9 vs. Houston. It's lefty Scott Kazmir (6-5, 2.24) for the Astros. He was great in his debut with the team last week after coming over from Oakland, shutting out the Royals over seven innings on three hits. While with the A's, he pitched once against the Angels in 2015, allowing a run over 7.1 innings. Trout is 3-for-8 off him.

Key trends: The Angels have won eight straight vs. lefties. They are 15-2 in Shoemaker's past 17 on the road. The over is 5-2-1 in his past eight on the road.

Early lean: Astros and under.

YANKEES (Pineda) @ RANGERS (Gallardo) 8:05 PM

Take: YANKEES -135

The Yankees explosive offense finally was held in check for one night as the Rangers captured a 5-2 Wednesday night win. I’m looking for the Pinstripes to get right back in rhythm tonight as they finish off their series in Texas.

Yovani Gallardo is supposedly still on the trade block, but if he remains a Ranger for this start, I believe the right move is to try and get the best of him. Gallardo has been very bad lately. He had a strong of four straight starts where he held the opposition scoreless. But Gallardo was getting some good fortune in that run and regardless, he’s gone south in a big way since that streak ended.

Gallardo has had some major command issues in his last few starts. His walk rate hasn’t been great and he’s also missing in the middle of the strike zone. That’s not going to fly against this Yankees lineup and off the recent data, Gallardo looks like a dead play against tonight.

Michael Pineda will throw for the Yankees, and while he has been erratic to some extent lately, Pineda is a slam dunk on the metrics comparison here, particularly when focusing on the last 30 days.

Then there’s those Yankee bats. Yes, they cooled off last night, but that really appears to be an aberration at this point. I don’t see Gallardo being able to effectively contain them, and while the Rangers can do their share of damage with the sticks, I also don’t see them keeping pace with the Bronx Bombers if my assessment of Gallardo is correct.

This won’t be cheap. The Yankees opened at a number I believe was too low. Apparently I wasn’t the only one as the quickly shot up to where it is as I’m writing this piece. I’m not generally inclined to spot substantial wood on the road, but can’t resist at a tag I still believe is too low. I’ll be looking to back the Yankees tonight.

New York Yankees vs Texas Rangers

5 Unit Bonus Play Texas Rangers

New York Yankees hand the ball to Michael Pineda with a 9-7 record and a 3.97 ERA. Pineda has gone 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA over his last eight outings giving up 22 runs in 19 1-3 innings of work in four of those starts. He limited teams to four earned runs over 28 1-3 innings in the other four. The right hander has a dismal 0-3 record with a 5.04 ERA starts against the Rangers in four career. The Yankees are 27-25 in road games and only 20-18 when facing teams with losing records.

Texas needed last night's 5-2 victory as it was only the second home win in the last 14 games. With the signing of Cole Hamels from the Phillies, Yovani Gallardo, 7-9 with a 3.19 ERA, is scheduled to make what could be his last start for the Rangers. Mitch Moreland is 4 for 9 with two homers, a double and a triple against the Pineda. Texas is 26-18 when playing against a team with a winning record this year.

Texas gets the nod in this spot for 5 Units.

Niese Earns Plaudits for Pitching Instead of Attending Birth of 2nd Child

Jon Niese earned cheers from the Met players and the fans in his last start when he chose to pitch instead of attending the birth of his second child. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for Niese or the Mets because the Dodgers rock him for 6 runs and 8 hits in only 3 innings. I think it is safe to give him a pass on that one when it comes to evaluating his performance. Niese is just 5-9 with a 3.75 era. His poor record can probably be attributed more to the lack of offense than the lack of prowess on Niese’s part. In his last 7 games Niese is 2-3 with a 2.98 era. This is the 4th straight season that Niese has had an era under 4.00, but the Mets lack of production has given him a 35-37 record over that time. In his career he is 57-60 with a 3.85 era. Part of Niese’s problems stem from an inability to pitch well at home. This season he is 3-4 with a 4.61 era at home versus a 3.02 era on the road. He has also failed to show fondness for day games going 1-2 with a 4.60 era in daylight as opposed to a 3.45 era in the dark.

9:10 am Washington Nationals at Miami Marlins

Haren Says Welcome Home !

Dan Haren has had a rough time lately. Not only is he the subject of persistent trade rumors, Haren has only won once in his last 9 starts, despite having 6 quality starts in that span. Part of the problem has been his struggles on the road where his era is a healthy 4.16 and his record 3-4. At home, however, it is a completely different story. Haren is 4 -2 with a 2.83 era at home in 10 starts. He is also a fan of day games where he is 4-1 with a 3.25 era. Three Nats are hitting .500 against Haren in limited at bats – Harper, Ramos, and Uggla. Jayson Werth is hitting .333 vs Haren. Harper and Uggla have tagged him for round-trippers.

4:05 pm Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

Harang Skips Rehab Assignment to Take Mound Against Braves

Aaron Harang has plantar fasciitis in his left foot. That ailment makes it difficult to walk let alone pitch in the major leagues. Harang was scheduled to make a rehab start in Triple-A yesterday, but problems with the rotation caused the Phils to skip that start and move him to the hill on Thursday. You know they are in trouble when the Phillies started Jerome Williams today. Harang is 4-11 with a 4.08 era. He is 0-7 in his last starts with a bloated era of 7.52. Something is definitely wrong. Harang was 12-12 for the Braves last year with a 3.57 era. He’s 2-6 with a 3.88 era at home. In his last 3 starts Haren has given up 16 runs in 17 innings.

4:10 pm Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox

Don’t Look Now – Here Come the White Sox !

The Chisox transformed themselves over the All Star break. Who knows what happened, but whatever it is the White Sox bats have come alive. Whether they can hit Steven Wright’s knuckleball is a whole other story, but the Pale Hose have come alive. Going into Wednesday’s game with Boston and Rick Porcello, the White Sox had taken 6 straight. Make it 7 now. They had raised their record in the second half to 16-8. The offense has been averaging 6.7 runs per game in that streak. The White Sox batting average during the run has been .309. All these numbers are significantly higher than they achieved in the first half of the season. Chicago has moved into 3rd place and have their sights set on the Minnesota Twins who occupy the second spot. The White Sox were purported to be sellers before the trading deadline but this mini-run could change that. And, oh yes, Chris Sale takes the bump for Chicago today.

5:10 pm Los Angeles Angels at Houston Astros

Shoemaker Tries to Restore Angel Pitching Prowess vs Kazmir

The Angels came into Houston with the lead in the AL West. They won’t be leaving with it when Matt Shoemaker squares off with Scott Kazmir. Shoemaker probably threw his best game of the season last week against the Twins going 6 innings, allowing 2 hits, 0 runs and striking out 10. Shoemaker was 16-4 with a 3.04 era last year with the Halos so maybe he is coming around. Kazmir is just Kazmir. After his trade to Houston Kazmir threw 7 scoreless innings against the Twins allowing only 3 singles. But as good as this pitching looks, there are some batters who are licking their chops. Five Astros are hitting .500 or better against Shoemaker in limited at bats. 2 other Astros are hitting .333 versus Shoemaker. They have also had 5 homers against Matt. The Angels Eric Aybar can’t wait to see Kazmir on the hill. Aybar is hitting .750 against him. Kole Calhoun is hitting .571 and 5 other Halos are hitting over .300 vs Kazmir. None, however, have touched him for a 4 bagger and he is holding Albert Pujols to just .125.
