Red Sox vs Yankees Bonus Play June 8, 2017

The Red Sox trail the Yankees by just one game in the AL East standings, and the two teams wrap up a three game set in the Bronx Thursday night. I'll give the edge to the Yankees, who have won five of the last six meetings between the two teams.

David Price will toe the slab for Boston, making just his third start of the season. Price (1-0, 3.00 ERA) allowed one run on three hits, striking out seven in seven innings in a 5-2 win at Baltimore his last time out. He's struggled against the Yankees, going 5-6 with a 5.93 ERA in his last 15 starts against them.

New York will hand the ball to Michael Pineda, who is having a fine season. Pineda (6-3, 3.76 ERA) allowed five runs on 10 hits in just five innings in a loss at Toronto his last time out. He's been great at home, going 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA in six starts in the Bronx.

The Red Sox have lost four of Price's last five starts, while the Yankees have won five of Pineda's last six home starts.

Take NYY.

GL,

Play - Arizona Diamondbacks w/Corbin (Game 956).

Edges - Diamondbacks: Corbin 6-1 with 3.27 ERA and 1.36 WHIP home team starts as opposed to 0-5 with 9.36 ERA and 2.00 WHIP away team starts this season… Padres: Richard off 8-5 win in which he last 5.2 innings while surrendering 10 hits and 4 runs… With the host 11-1 in Corbin’s starts this season, we recommend a 1* play on Arizona. Thank you and good luck as always.

Preview: Cardinals at Reds

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (26-30) at Cincinnati Reds (27-30)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 08 - 12:35 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cincinnati Reds go after their first four-game sweep of the season when they host the struggling St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon in a battle of National League Central rivals. The Reds appeared to be on their way to a loss Wednesday before scoring five times in the seventh inning - a rally keyed by Patrick Kivlehan’s three-run pinch-hit homer - en route to a 6-4 triumph.

Cincinnati has outscored the Cardinals 23-7 in the series and has posted a total 39 runs in six games this month, with Zack Cozart recording six RBIs in six contests and going 8-for-15 over his last four. Veteran Scott Feldman, who beat St. Louis by tossing six scoreless innings on April 9, will oppose former Red Mike Leake in Thursday’s finale. Leake yielded two runs over 14 frames against Cincinnati in April but came away with a loss and a no-decision to drop to 0-3 lifetime versus the club. The Cardinals have dropped six straight games - allowing a total of 38 runs - but Matt Carpenter provided some positivity Wednesday by belting a homer for his first extra-base hit since May 21.

TV: 12:35 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Mike Leake (5-4, 2.64 ERA) vs. Reds RH Scott Feldman (4-4, 4.52)

Leake gave up two runs or fewer in eight of his first nine starts this year before struggling in losses to the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. The 29-year-old Arizona State product allowed nine runs and 12 hits over 13 2/3 innings in those outings but has issued only 12 walks in 75 frames overall. Billy Hamilton (7-for-14, one homer) and Adam Duvall (8-for-19, two homers) have given Leake trouble.

Feldman is 2-0 in his last three starts but escaped with a no-decision last time out after permitting five runs - four earned - over 4 1/3 innings against Atlanta. The 34-year-old from Hawaii, who struck out six and yielded four hits versus St. Louis in the April victory, has produced five quality starts in 12 outings. Yadier Molina is 2-for-3 with a double against Feldman, who is 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA in two career starts versus the Cardinals.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis RF Stephen Piscotty recorded a pair of hits Wednesday and is 6-for-13 with two homers and five RBIs during his four-game hitting streak.

2. Cincinnati INF Scooter Gennett, who belted a team-record four homers in Tuesday’s victory, went 1-for-4 a day later.

3. The Cardinals, who are 2-6 against the Reds in 2017, have been outscored 42-18 in the seventh inning this season.

Preview: Angels at Tigers

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (30-31) at Detroit Tigers (28-29)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 08 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Justin Upton has been heating up during the last half-dozen games and the Detroit Tigers have followed suit with wins in five of those contests. Upton homered in three of his last four outings and carries both a six-game hitting and RBI streak into the rubber match of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon.

Upton launched a three-run shot for his team-high 12th homer in Wednesday's 4-0 victory over Los Angeles to improve to 10-for-21 with 11 RBIs and six runs scored during his hitting streak. The 29-year-old has also gone deep against Thursday starter JC Ramirez, but the homer accounts for his lone hit against five strikeouts in eight career at-bats versus the right-hander. While Detroit (29-29) has evened its record due to its strong play at home (16-11), Los Angeles sustained its fifth loss in its last seven road contests and fell to 12-20 away from Angel Stadium of Anaheim. A lack of offense hasn't helped matters for manager Mike Scioscia's club, which mustered just three hits on Wednesday and is struggling to piece together significant at-bats with stud Mike Trout (thumb) on the disabled list.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH JC Ramirez (5-4, 4.11 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (6-3, 3.00)

Ramirez surrendered three homers and a season-high seven runs while pitching 4 1/3 innings in an 11-5 loss versus Minnesota on Friday. "JC didn't look like he had his edge early. He was missing counts, missing getting his breaking stuff into the game early," Scioscia said of the 28-year-old, who was coming off three straight quality starts. Ramirez didn't fare much better in his last tangle with the Tigers, as he was taken deep twice and permitted five runs in seven innings of a 7-1 setback on May 11.

Fulmer received an extra day's rest after Detroit elected to recall Buck Farmer from Triple-A Toledo to make his major-league debut on Wednesday. Fulmer, the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year Award winner, improved to 5-2 in his last eight starts on Friday despite allowing five runs on seven hits in a 15-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Included in that stretch was an impressive performance versus Los Angeles on May 11, when he permitted just one run on three hits and struck out seven in seven frames of a 7-1 win.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit RHP Justin Verlander, who exited Sunday's game with tightness in his right groin, will throw a bullpen session Thursday.

2. Los Angeles SS Andrelton Simmons has collected a hit in each outing of the series after going 2-for-18 in his previous five contests.

3. Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is just 1-for-10 after recording six hits and four RBIs in his previous three games.

Preview: Giants at Brewers

GAME: San Francisco Giants (24-36) at Milwaukee Brewers (31-28)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 08 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Domingo Santana has followed an impressive May with a sterling start to June, carrying a seven-game hitting streak into the finale of the Milwaukee Brewers' four-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Thursday afternoon. Santana homered for the third time in six contests and improved to 10-for-29 with eight runs scored this month following Wednesday's 6-3 victory.

Like Santana, Jesus Aguilar has recorded back-to-back multi-hit performances and is hitting .328 over his last 23 games for National League Central-leading Milwaukee. While the Brewers have won three of four overall to move within one game of .500 at home, the Giants have dropped four of their last five and fell to 11-23 on the road heading into the finale of their seven-game trek. Buster Posey launched a two-run homer on Wednesday to improve to 14-for-34 with seven RBIs and five runs scored during his nine-game hitting streak. Brandon Belt has recorded four hits in the series and scored a run in five of his last six contests.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCSN Bay Arena (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Johnny Cueto (5-5, 4.38 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Paolo Espino (0-0, 4.50)

Cueto fell to 1-4 in his last six outings on Saturday despite allowing three runs and striking out nine in six innings of a 5-3 setback to Philadelphia. The 31-year-old Dominican has worked at least six frames in each of his last eight starts, although a lack of run support and his penchant for surrendering home runs haven't helped his cause. Facing Milwaukee likely brings a smile to the face of Cueto, who has won eight in a row against the Brewers and owns an 11-3 record with a 1.02 WHIP in his career while limiting the club to a .228 batting average.

Espino was summoned to start Thursday's tilt in lieu of the injured Matt Garza, who was placed on the disabled list as he continues to deal with lingering effects from a chest contusion sustained during a collision with Aguilar. The 30-year-old Espino has performed admirably with a 3.44 ERA in nine starts at Colorado Springs and weathered the storm over four rainy innings against the Chicago Cubs in his major-league debut on May 19. Espino allowed three runs and five hits while striking out three and not walking a batter against the Cubs.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Francisco INF Eduardo Nunez is 6-for-13 with four runs scored in the series and 15-for-39 during his nine-game hitting streak.

2. Milwaukee CF Keon Broxton is hitless in his last four contests and is 4-for-43 in his last 13.

3. Giants SS Brandon Crawford is 0-for-10 in the series after collecting four hits and seven RBIs in his previous three games versus the Phillies.

Preview: Padres at Diamondbacks

GAME: San Diego Padres (23-36) at Arizona Diamondbacks (35-25)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 08 - 3:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Arizona Diamondbacks attempt to complete their third consecutive three-game sweep at home when they host the San Diego Padres on Thursday afternoon. Arizona has won eight in a row at Chase Field, taking three straight from both the New York Mets and Chicago White Sox before capturing the first two contests against San Diego.

Wednesday's 7-4 triumph helped the Diamondbacks raise their major league-best home record to 23-8. Jake Lamb has been a big factor in Arizona's current success in the desert as he carries an 11-game hitting streak at Chase Field into the series finale after belting a three-run homer on Wednesday, giving him seven RBIs in the first two games against the Padres. Despite a 3-for-3 performance by Jose Pirela during its 11-hit effort, San Diego suffered its fourth straight setback on Wednesday. Yangervis Solarte has recorded four multi-hit performances in his last eight contests after going 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs in the Padres' latest loss.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN San Diego, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Clayton Richard (4-6, 4.36 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (4-6, 5.43)

Richard has yielded 10 hits in three of his last four turns but gave up only three earned runs in two of those, winning one. The 33-year-old native of Indiana is 2-1 in three outings versus Arizona this season, including a complete-game victory - his first since 2012 - on May 21 in which he allowed one run and five hits. It continued Richard's mastery of the Diamondbacks, as he is 10-4 with a 3.92 ERA in 16 career starts against them.

Corbin has been pounded in his last two starts, surrendering 13 runs and 19 hits over nine innings en route to a pair of losses. The 27-year-old New Yorker gave up two earned runs in each of his previous two turns against San Diego this year and recorded a total of 17 strikeouts with only two walks over 13 frames but went just 1-1. Corbin owns a 4-5 record and 3.38 ERA in 13 career appearances (eight starts) versus the Padres.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt leads the majors in runs with 50 after scoring twice in each of the first two games of the series versus San Diego.

2. Arizona RHP Taijuan Walker (finger), who has been on the disabled list since May 20, threw a simulated game Wednesday and experienced no issues.

3. San Diego RHP Miguel Diaz is slated to make his first major-league start Saturday against Kansas City.

PREDICTION: Padres 5, Diamondbacks 4
