MLB Comp Pick for Thursday, June 5, 2014: 08:40 PM EST

(907) ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS VS (908) COLORADO ROCKIES

Take: Your free pick for Thursday, June 5th, 2014, comes in baseball as the Diamondbacks and the Rockies meet in Colorado's Coors Field. Coors Field is an offensive park and the Rockies are tops in baseball in slugging, third in runs and on base percentage. The over is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings. It's hard to see Arizona's 37-year old righty Bronson Arroyo (4-4, 4.39 ERA) throwing well against this offense in this park. Opponents are hitting .287 off him surrendering 14 homers in 67+ innings. Arroyo gave up five earned runs on nine hits over seven innings pitched on Friday against the Reds, the second time in three starts he's allowed 5 runs. The over is 20-9 in the Rockies last 29 home games vs. a right-handed starter. Arizona is 12th in baseball in slugging and they face Juan Nicasio, who has had some control concerns. Nicasio allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out two over 4.2 innings of a 5-2 loss to Cleveland on Friday night. The over is 19-7-1 in Nicasio's last 27 home starts and 4-1-1 over the total in his last 6 starts vs. the Diamondbacks, including 4-1 over in this park.

Play the Diamondbacks/Rockies over the total.

FedEx St. Jude Classic Preview and Picks
Matt Fargo

The final tuneup before the U.S. Open takes place this week as the PGA Tour heads to Memphis and the TPC at Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Classic. This stop has been a mainstay on the PGA Tour schedule for years and although it has gone through some tough times in trying to gain sponsors, FedEx jumped in recently and is here through 2016. This is where the first ever 59 was carded as Al Geiberger achieved the feat back in 1959 at the then named Danny Thomas Memphis Classic.

TPC at Southwind was opened in March 1988 and has played host to the St. Jude Classic since 1989. The course has 10 water hazards making accuracy in the fairway and greens in regulation extremely important. Six years ago, Southwind played the toughest of all non-majors on the schedule but it was a lot easier in 2009 as it ranked 20th out of 51 courses in difficulty. The last four years though, it returned to difficult status and last year was the third hardest par 70 of non-majors.

Because of the U.S. Open being played next week, a lot of players are taking the week off and it is a watered-down field this week. The field includes only four players ranked in the top ten of the FedEx Cup Standings and no top ten player in the OWGR is playing after Matt Kuchar withdrew on Tuesday. Notables include Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood, Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson. With the field being light, it makes for a very wide open tournament as proven by some of the recent past champions.

Ryan Palmer (+1,900) is coming off a T5 at the Crown Plaza Invitational in his last start which was his fifth top ten of the season. He has missed only two cuts this year and he should once again be in the hunt here following a solo fourth last year and a T3 in 2012. He is ranked fourth in the all around.

John Senden (+3,000) is worth a strong look this week. He has one win already this year at the Valspar and he additionally has two top eights since then including a T5 at the Colonial in his last start. He has not played here the last two years but has two top tens in his career and coupled with his recent form, he is dangerous.

David Toms (+4,500) has excellent value and it is not solely based on his success at Southwind. He has won twice here while also coming in second two times and while he finished T56 last year, he was coming off four missed cut in his previous five starts. This year, he has made five straight cuts coming in including a T5 at Colonial.

Billy Horschel (+5,000) is getting longshot odds as he has kind of fallen out of the radar. He is coming off a T15 last week at the Memorial which was his best finish since a T6 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. After a missed cut and a T72 in his first two starts here, he went on to a T10 finish last year.

David Hearn (+6,000) will be another longshot take this week and he is coming with favorable trends. The Canadian has made five straight cuts including a T6 at the Players which was his third top ten of the season. He finished T18 here last year which was his fourth consecutive made cut at TPC Southwind.

PGA Tour Picks: St. Jude Classic Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - DOC Sports

Quite a wacky finish to Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament in Ohio last week, finally won by 22-year-old Hideki Matsuyama, a Japanese phenom who was low amateur at the 2011 Masters and will be winning more tournaments on the PGA Tour.

It seemed like everyone got the yips off the tee on the final few holes Sunday at Muirfield. For example, Bubba Watson had a one-shot lead with five holes to play. He was 3-over the rest of the way thanks largely to hitting into someone’s backyard on No. 15 and leading to double bogey. World No. 1 Adam Scott was tied for the lead until playing the last seven holes in 4-over. Matsuyama hit into the water on No. 16 for double-bogey and flew his approach on No. 17 over the green for a bogey. However, he birdied No. 18 — after his drive bounced off a tree and landed in the fairway; he snapped his driver in anger before seeing the final result — for the fourth straight day and then beat Kevin Na in a playoff with a 10-foot par putt when Na yanked his tee shot left and it landed in a creek. Matsuyama obviously couldn’t use his driver on the playoff hole, using a 3-wood instead.

Matsuyama became the first player to win the Memorial in his debut since the first year of the tournament in 1976. He has five wins in a little more than a year as a pro, the other four coming on the Japan Tour. Matsuyama jumped to No. 13 in the world, while Watson, after his solo third place, passed Tiger Woods to move up to No. 3. A victory would have been his career-high third on the season. Don’t feel too bad for Na. The high finish jumped him high enough in the world rankings that he’s now in the U.S. Open instead of having to play a qualifier. The guy who had the worst week was Phil Mickelson, who never broke 70, finished T49 and now has the FBI investigating him for insider trading. Perhaps that’s why Lefty has struggled all year? I’m sure he has known about it. He went to play Pinehurst, site of the U.S. Open, on Monday and Tuesday before heading to Memphis.

Needless to say, I didn’t recommend Matsuyama last week. I liked Jim Furyk at 25/1, and he finished T19. Also thought Bo Van Pelt had a shot to contend as a long shot, but he finished T19 as well. About all I hit on was Scott at 2/3 as the top Aussie finisher. Head-to-head I hit on Watson (-115) over Jason Day, and Jordan Spieth (-165) over Day, who was T37. I also got Furyk in a threesome at +200 against Justin Rose (missed cut) and Luke Donald (T49).

This week it’s the final warm-up for the U.S. Open with a fairly weak field at the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis. Mickelson leads six of the Top 25 in the world. I’ve always found it fascinating which players choose to play the week before a major and those who don’t. Phil has liked doing it in recent years, and it worked for him at last year’s British Open. Tiger, by contrast, never does. He already has scratched himself for next week. Almost none of the top Europeans are playing, either. No player has ever won the U.S. Open when winning the PGA Tour stop the week preceding it.

Harris English is back to defend his title. He birdied Nos. 16 and 17 on Sunday for a two-shot win over Mickelson and Scott Stallings. It was English’s first PGA Tour victory. The only player this century to repeat here was David Toms in 2003-04. English is just outside the favorites at 25/1 at Bovada.

PGA Tour Golf Odds: St. Jude Classic Favorites

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar were 14/1 favorites at Bovada. Johnson won here two years ago and was 10th last year. He has a win and two runner-up finishes this season but hasn’t been better than T14 the past two events. Remember how a few weeks ago I said bet on Kuchar for a Top 10 every week? Well, Mr. Consistent has been a bit off. He had a missed cut at Colonial and a T15 last week. The guy should take a week off, but he rarely does. Apparently he took my advice. Kuchar withdrew on Tuesday (Bovada still has him active).

Mickelson is 16/1. Still no Top-10 finishes this year, and I don’t think he really cares about winning here. Phil simply wants to work on parts of his game that will be key next week at Pinehurst. Lee Westwood, the top European, is 18/1. He won here in 2010. It’s Westwood’s first PGA Tour event since a T6 at the Players Championship. Ryan Palmer (22/1) rounds out the favorites. This guy hasn’t won since 2010 but has come close a handful of times. He has two second-place finishes this season and was fourth in Memphis in 2013 and third the year before.

PGA Tour Picks: St. Jude Classic Predictions

Bovada is offering Top-5 props on every player, but there’s not a guy I love that much except Palmer at 4/1. I certainly would take him at +185 for a Top 10. Ditto Westwood at +165 and Johnson at +125. I don’t expect much from Lefty. Take Paul Casey, who has really been playing well, at +225 as the top Englishman over Westwood (so obviously a Top 10 for Casey too). Robert Allenby at 9/2 as the top Australasian. He has a strong track record in Memphis, led by a runner-up in 2008. Head-to-head, take Westwood (-115) over Mickelson (-115), English (-115) over Webb Simpson (-115), Casey (+105) over John Senden (-135) and J.B. Holmes (-115) over Rickie Fowler (-115).

I could see Justin Leonard contending and he’s way down at 150/1. He won this tournament in 2005 & ’08, and while he’s not the same player, he also qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday at a qualifier, so all the pressure will be off him in Memphis. But I’m going with Palmer.

It was another great week for the newcomers last week at the Memorial, as 22-year-old Hideki Matsuyama won his first career PGA Tour event after being victorious five times on the Japan Golf Tour. Big names like Bubba Watson and Adam Scott were both near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, but neither were able to do enough to overcome the youngster. This week the golfers will head to Memphis for the St. Jude Classic, a golf tournament that has been held annually in Tennessee since 1958. Last season, Harris English took to this course and won his first career PGA event as he shot 12-under par, winning by two strokes. The field is a weak one for this tourney, as Matt Kuchar is the only player from the top-10 of the World Golf Rankings while there are just five others from the top-25. With so many players resting before the U.S. Open, it looks like another prime chance for the underdog to take a win. Let’s take a look at a few of the players who could come away with the trophy this week.

Golfers to Watch

Dustin Johnson (14/1): Johnson has been having a big year with top-10 finishes in half of his 12 tournaments. On this fairly short course, he can use his big drives (311.9 yards per, 2nd on tour) and ability to hit greens in regulation (67.7%, 8th on tour) to score low. Johnson is also a former winner in this tournament, shooting 9-under with three rounds of 68 or better in 2012. His great play has put him in fourth in the FedEx standings and he should be a solid bet this week to win his ninth career PGA event.

Kevin Na (40/1): Na went into a playoff last week at the Memorial, eventually losing on the first hole as he attempted to win his second career PGA tournament. He has four other top-10 finishes this season and has the 11th-best scoring average on tour (69.96). Na has not won on the tour since late-2011, but he seems poised to get another win very soon.

Harris English (26/1): English was the winner here last season, and he already has six top-10 finishes in 2014, including a win at the OHL Classic. His 71.2% greens hit in regulation percentage is third-best on tour while he has a scoring average of 69.89 (7th on tour). As English continues his solid season and plays on a course he has confidence with, a win is certainly not a far reach for the 24-year-old.

Martin Flores (55/1): Flores has placed in the top-20 in four of his past seven tournaments, including a 3rd-place performance at the Wells Fargo Championship in early May. He is having the best year of his young career while shooting a combined 94-under on Par-5’s (4th on tour). Flores finished tied for 13th here last season and should be able to put together another solid showing this weekend.

Robert Streb (110/1): Streb has improved in his second season on the PGA Tour, and after making just 12-of-25 cuts last year, he has done so in 10-of-11 events in 2014. He has shown he has the talent to get a victory with a runner-up performance at the Zurich Classic, and could be the next of a long line of first-time winners on tour this season
