At the Gate - Thursday
By Mike Dempsey
Horse racing lost a promising up and coming jockey on Tuesday, with 17-year-old apprentice Juan Saez succumbing to injuries involved in a spill at Indiana Grand.
The incident happened in the eighth race on Tuesday night. Saez was aboard Montezuma Express, who appeared to clip the heels with Paddy’s Note. Saez hit the ground hard, as did his mount, and it looked as if he may have been struck by trailing horses.
Saez, the younger brother of jockey Luis Saez, won the jockey title at the Ellis Park summer meeting and appeared to have a bright future. He won 89 races from 440 mounts with earnings of $2,053,219.
"Juan Saez possessed an immense gift for riding horses, and there is no telling how bright his future as a jockey would have been," Alex Waldrop, president and chief executive of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, said in a statement.
It was the third jockey to die recently in riding accidents. Caitlin Forrest, just 19 years old and with 51 winners in her career died after a four horse spill at Murray Bridge in Australia.
Jockey Carly-Mae Pye died from the injuries sustained in a fall during a barrier trial at Callaghan Park in Queensland on Monday morning. She was 26.
It’s a reminder that we are gambling our money, but the jockeys are gambling with their lives each and every time the gate opens.
Here is today’s opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:
BEL Race 1 Clm $50,000N3L (12:50 ET)
2 Indian Nobility 2-1
3 Jigsaw 10-1
7 Successful Brothers 7-2
9 Bigger Picture 8-1
Analysis: Indian Nobility beat $50,000 non-winners of two last out in a game effort going seven furlongs at the Spa and stretches out another furlong here. The gelding makes his first start for the Jacobson barn that is 26% winners first off the claim. He is bred for a wet track and has a couple of seconds in two trips over off going, which we seem likely to see today.
Jigsaw came up short last out on turf against $75,000 optional claimers and finds a better spot here tagged for $50,000 and facing non-winners of three. Two back this guy beat $50,000 starter allowance foes over a muddy track at the Spa. The Contessa trainee has a strong off track pedigree and I am assuming we are going to be off the turf today.
Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 8-5 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 7 Clm $32,000 (3:56 ET)
4 Bernie the Maestro 4-1
8 Royal Currier 5-2
5 Joan's Choice 7-2
6 Regulus 9-2
Analysis: Bernie the Maestro tracked the early pace toward the outside and came up empty in the stretch, weakening to finish seventh against $50,000 claimers. The third place finisher Wealth to Me came back to beat $35,000 starter allowance foes with a 908 Beyer in his next outing. Two back our top pick won for a $50,000 tag in his first go off the claim by former Levine assistant Cannizzo. The gelding drops into a better spot here tagged for $32,000 and he loves the wet stuff, winning 4 of 9 over off tracks.
Royal Currier drops in class after coming up short in the Tale of the Cat, a race that produced three next out winners. The winner Bern Identity came back to win the Dave's Friend in his next outing on Sept. 6 and then ran third in the Phoenix (G3) at Keeneland. The Jacobson trainee fits better here tagged for $32,000 and the gelding has run well over the main track here but sports a 0 for 6 record with a couple of seconds on wet tracks.
