The profile of preseason football is changing...not long ago these were little more than scrimmages disguised as games with gentlemen's agreements between coaches on using basic defenses and vanilla offenses. The idea was mainly to evaluate backups, get players gradually into shape under game conditions, and provide low overhead revenue for team owners. (players are paid short money for these games). Now--- with mini-camps and mandantory year-round conditioning programs , huge coaches salaries and pressure to produce immediately, it means no fooling around, plus the "league office" insists these games are exciting and not perceived as "exhibitions" . They realize new NFL fans are generated by finding their way into preseason games that are are exciting and played with purpose.
In tonights game ----San Diego steamed to a 3 point favorite after Green Bay opened a 2 point favorite. I can find reasons to use both sides, but think each teams starting QB's ( Brees and Farve) can put quick scores in the first quarter and set the game's tempo before turning the controls over to designated backups. Backup QB's for both teams--- especially Phil Rivers for SD and Craig Nall for Green Bay should be productive. Both teams should be on their toes for blitzes after watching the two earlier games. Blitzing is a double edged sword than can cause favorable field position turnovers and interceptions, as well as create defensive voids that can become big offensive plays if exploited by the offense. Once the first teams finish their business I expect aggressive offensive play calling and both teams trying find athletes who can make "plays". Both these teams currently have secondary and linebacker injury issues and these areas were not their strengths last year to start with. I'm looking for some wide open offensive football tonight with both teams looking to score to the end.
