Thousands of people bucked California’s lockdown measures to exercise what they said were their God-given, “inalienable rights” to attend a rodeo.
The Cottonwood Rodeo forged ahead Sunday with support from local law enforcement for its annual Mother’s Day event in Shasta County, SF Gate reported.
Sheriff Eric Magrini announced prior to the event that authorities wouldn’t enforce the stay-at-home order, saying they want attendees to be “responsible,” news station KRCR reported.
“What we are seeking is that we want people to again, be responsible,” Magrini said. “We’ve had a low, we done a good job to flatten the curve.”
Video from the rodeo posted to Twitter showed groups without masks on the grounds and long lines for the bathrooms and food trucks.
“We have constitutional rights. We have inalienable rights given to us by God,” Don Johnson said of his decision to attend, according to KRCR.
Another attendee, Daniel Warner, said going to the rodeo was a chance to be around his “friends I haven’t seen in a while.”
“This event has been going on for 50 years, it is a tradition for probably most of us, the rest of them that are here have been tired of being cooped up for months,” Warner told the outlet.
Jeff Davis, who produces the rodeo, defended the decision to host the crowds, saying there were measures taken to make the grounds safe, KRCR reported. He noted that they nixed the parade and also set up hand-washing stations.
“Nobody was forced to come here as a contestant or as a spectator,” Davis said. “If you wanted to come and enjoy yourself, we had an event.”
