Courtesy of leatherneck Magazine.

1962 - Lt Col Archie Clapp and HMM-362 flew into Vietnam's Mekong Delta to set up operations at the Soc Trang airfield as part of operation SHUFLY, thus becoming the first operational Marine Corps unit deployed to Vietnam.

1971 - III Maf redeployed to Okinawa after 6 years of service in Vietnam.

I just love reading your MC ditties.

Did I ever tell you about the time in Vietnam, when we still allowed the off duty Grunts to carry their weapons into the EM club - there they were, on our little patio, guzzling a few brews, when one of them decided to do a little target practice on a bunch of 55 gallon drums that were stacked two high about a hundred yards away - used for honey buckets - anyway, here they are - about four of them, shooting at these drums, when suddenly the base alarm starts sounding - our hootches were about another hundred yards beyond the drum dump, and the Marine bullets were wining through them - some people thought the base was under attack and sounded the alarm - wow - what a ruckus!

I don't know what happened to those grunts, but needless to say, Marines were never again allowed near the EM club without being disarmed!

That is a true story, so help me God!!!!

I believe it.

Sounds like apart of a funny movie, although I am sure it was not funny to those behind the barrels. I hope no one was hurt during this.

Marines will be Marines
