This conscientious objector is a "punk"

SAN FRANCISCO -- With his sister carrying his duffel bag and his mother holding his hand, a 20-year-old Marine reservist surrendered to military authorities Tuesday and declared himself a conscientious objector, weeks after refusing to report when called up to active duty.

Wearing camouflage fatigues, Lance Cpl. Stephen Funk turned himself in at the locked gates of the Marine Corps reserve center where he was assigned.

"Ultimately, it's my fault for joining in the first place," said Funk, who didn't show up when his unit was deployed to Camp Pendleton. "It wasn't as well thought out as it should've been. It was about me being depressed and wanting direction in life."

Funk, who grew up in Washington state, enlisted last February when he was 19 and living on his own for the first time.

He should of thought about it before he signed up. At lest the rest of the Military have enough "balls" to do their jobs.

They're better off without him anyway.
I wouldn't fancy relying on someone like that in a combat zone.

I agree with you on this point. But this:

At lest the rest of the Military have enough "balls" to do their jobs.

The way I look at it, it doesn't take much balls to follow orders; it doesn't take much balls to commit atrocities so that when the justice comes (just like at Nuremburg) you can say, "I was just doing my job..."

It doesn't take much balls at all to follow, to crush a weaker foe; those aren't balls.

took balls to roll that grenade into that tent....then shoot the guys as they ran out....but he`ll get himself an excellent lawyer....2 years house arrest....followed by harsh probation.....that`ll teach him....

i am aware of that,rfc....you were going on a "doesn`t take much balls" rant.....i was just fanning the flames....was enjoying your rancor

Yes, its called "Having Balls" when you do your sworn duty in the military! When you put your life on the line in service to your country, when you do the job you took an oath to do! Of course the only alternative is to puss out get your ass thrown in the stockade & branded a pussy & coward for the rest of your life!

Best of luck no matter what side you are on!

Patton should slap him

That would set him straight.

What did this guy expect? You don't have to serve. How could he not know that he was signing up for military duty with a country that is almost always at war?

saying he's a punk, is like saying rosie o'donnell is fat -- calling this kid a punk is very benign.

ummm...no. Heroes are people that do not do their duty. A firefighter is not a hero because HE IS JUST DOING HIS JOB!
Now, if its a milkman who saves a woman/child/man from a burning building, then yes...he's a hero.
You cannot be a hero due to obligation to job duty. IF you are drafted to war, you have balls for serving. If you enlist, you know how its going to be, you know that war is hell, you know that you might lose your life.

All it really means is getting paid better when you retire.

What a coward. His marine brothers are dying and he cuts and runs. He's surely to be the next high profile democrat.

The examples abound that attest to the courage of President Bush during Vietnam.

This is another example of the 'reality check' view I take on a lot of these side issue tangential to the war, like the van full of people too stupid to know what the business end of an M-16 signifies.

Stupid war. Useless, puerile, shameful leaders. American lives spent to defend an Iraqi people and general Arabic community which deserves no better than itself. Can't blame anyone for being against it.

But ... sign up for the military, sign up for being soldier. There are no 'conscientious objectors' in the military. This man should be court-martialed and treated as a deserter.

I had a friend who did this during the Gulf War, a National Guard Sergeant who said something to the effect of, "I never really thought they'd send me, you know, overseas and sh*t." Well, dumbass, should have gone to work for Home Depot -- they hardly ever send people overseas to fight and have a great dental plan.

Whole f*cking world has lost touch with such high-thinking concepts as 2+2=4. It is a global environment of freedom from consequences which has engendered most of the problems we face on every level, from personal to national to international.
