The Las Vegas Raiders are benching quarterback Derek Carr in favor of Jarrett Stidham for the final two games of the season, coach Josh McDaniels announced Wednesday.
In announcing the quarterback change, McDaniels said the Raiders wanted to evaluate their younger players at multiple positions.
Stidham, a 2019 fourth-round pick, will make his first career start Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. He is 8-for-13 for 72 yards in three games this season.
The Raiders plan to use undrafted rookie free agent Chase Garbers as the backup quarterback against the 49ers, indicating that Carr will be inactive. Carr had started 91 straight regular-season games for the Raiders through Week 16.
The move comes after Carr has thrown nine interceptions in the Raiders' past five games while completing just 57% of his passes. The Raiders won three of those games, however, and at 6-9 are still mathematically alive for a playoff spot.
McDaniels had said Monday that the Raiders needed to "throw the ball better" to be successful.
Carr had signed a three-year extension with the Raiders in April, but they would take a cap hit of only $5.625 million if they cut ties with the quarterback before mid-February, when his $32.9 million salary for 2023 and $7.5 million of his 2024 salary would become fully guaranteed. Those amounts are guaranteed for injury only until three days after the Super Bowl.

100% financial move

Carr gonna get paid the day after the super bowl if he cant rework a team friendly deal so not worth it to risk an injury

Should have benched him a couple years ago. Above is correct as they don't want to risk injury. Some concern what Adams' reaction will be if Carr is not on the team, but Brady would cure that. Some said LV was on his list before he went to Tampa. Way past time for Carr to exit the Raiders.

Really? A 46 year old Brady?

I would have to think Brady retires after this season. He really going to keep pushing the envelope til he is just a shell and either gets benched or carried off field?

They should bench the coach for the last two games instead. This offense has not worked well from the beginning. A lot of things wrong with the Raiders, starting with the coach Josh McClown.

Be interesting to see what he fetches in a trade. He had a horrible year and the Wilson/ryan deals gonna have teams a little more cautious with these vet QBs that their team doesn’t want

Carr will end up being cut. Nobody in their right mind trades for him.

Carr is basically a rich man's Blake Bortles. Even when he is playing well everyone knows its unsustainable for him...

Carr bros made a hell of a lot of many to lose games, throw picks and lay down.

You can do it the Manning way or the Carr way. I wonder when the Carr nephew will make his appearance on the big stage.

Funny last year Derek Carr was having a great year, now you have a new head coach (which everyone wants gone) & now you're benching the QB....the head coach should be benched, fired & replaced.

LOL.

If any of that were true Raiders wouldn't be looking at moving on after this year. Would chalk it up to just a down year because of a lot of new parts.

The truth is he isn't very good and has never been very good.

Isn't Colin the same guy who said Giannis wasn't even a top 10 player in the play-offs 2 seasons ago and they go on to win the championship. The same guy who before game one of the finals said Khris Middleton is the best player on that team. Then when Finals were over he was proclaiming Giannis as the best player ever. LOL

Colin Cowheard; a slightly less annoying skip bayless. Go against the grain and pray your right then preach about it for years and if you're wrong never mention it again or try to slide in like the right side was always your opinion.

Raiders bench Derek Carr; QB to step away from team, avoid distraction.

HENDERSON, Nev. -- The Las Vegas Raiders are benching Derek Carr, the team's starting quarterback since 2014, first-year coach Josh McDaniels announced Wednesday.
Jarrett Stidham, acquired in an offseason trade from the New England Patriots, will start against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium, and undrafted rookie free agent Chase Garbers will be the backup.
A source confirmed to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that Carr and the Raiders agreed that he will step away from the team for the remainder of the regular season so he's not a distraction. He was the lone active Raiders player not to practice on Wednesday, with the team listing his absence as "not injury related, personal."
"The two sides talked about it and thought it was best," the source said.
Stidham, a 2019 fourth-round pick, will be making his first career start Sunday. He is 8-for-13 for 72 yards in three games this season.
Carr, who holds virtually every passing record in franchise history, had signed a three-year, $121.5 million contract extension in the spring, but he could be cut for a $5.625 million salary-cap hit if the move is made within three days of the Super Bowl. His $32.9 million salary for next year and $7.5 million of his 2024 salary would be fully guaranteed should he be injured.
Sources told Fowler that the Raiders made this move in part to maintain Carr's health and keep their options open this offseason, including for a potential trade. The sources did note that the option for Carr to return in 2023 is still on the table.
McDaniels said there was no "finality" in the decision to shut down Carr.
None of us is happy with where we're at, but we think it's an opportunity to evaluate a younger player who hasn't had much time to play," McDaniels said. "Derek was great. He understands the scenario that we're in and the situation and is very supportive of the two young guys. He'll do anything he can to help them."
Carr has struggled in his first season under the Raiders' new regime of McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. Carr has an NFL-high and career-high-tying 14 interceptions, and his passer rating of 86.3 is his lowest since his rookie season.
The Raiders also placed a pair of veteran defensive players on injured reserve in defensive end Chandler Jones and linebacker Denzel Perryman. They suffered left elbow and left shoulder injuries, respectively, against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.
Las Vegas, a playoff team a year ago at 10-7 under interim coach Rich Bisaccia, is 6-9 and still mathematically alive for a playoff spot as it closes the regular season against the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
