I fundamentally disagree that travel is an issue. With team private jets, with the operating budget, these teams have traveling down to a science. I don't think the traveling would be that much worse, it would be very minimal IMO...

However, I agree, it would have to be a balanced schedule. Play all teams 3 times (with the exception of 7 teams) makes 82 games.

Rivalries have been dead for a while, it's all media driven. Reality is public doesn't care about team a vs team b. There aren't many die hards of teams, generally speaking, people are a fan of players. The NBA world gets hyped because of match ups. In your theory, Knicks vs Lakers get hyped up... My theory give me Durant vs Lebron. There's no history between these teams yet this is what gets the buzz. This isn't the rivalry era between the Knicks and Heat, there's no coach hanging off players legs...

It might not seem like much but a balanced schedule over 82 teams would make travel much worse. In the playoffs what if the Knicks play the Clippers rd 1, they gotta fly back and forth cross country while say 2 Texas teams play?

NBA doesn't have rivalries like say college football but there are still matchups that people want to see. The pacers being able to finally vanquish the Heat in the east is a very real thing with interest to it. The Spurs/Lakers in the west a lot of those years. The Spurs/Mavs in the west....Rivalries in the rematch sense are good for business.

Top 16 teams make it sounds cool but I mean really who is the best team in the last 20 years to miss the playoffs? I don't even know off my head but I'm thinking it is a pretty forgettable team, not the biggest issue in the world.

I'd rather see what your saying be done in the NFL I think

Gotta think if that happened the superbowl matchups over the years would've been far more compelling.

Few Brady/Manning's in there, maybe Seattle/SF last year, those NFC years in the 90s with SF/Dallas, etc etc

General consensus is fewer games would be more... Which I agree... But last year in the lock out was the most interesting Regular NBA season in my adult life... Again, I don't think travel is that big of a deal. you travel as much as these players do, you're numb to it. It's just part of the job.

Defy, I live and breathe University of Hawaii sports. Trust me, travel is an issue. It is about changing time zones as much as it is the physical wear and tear of the travel

I generally agree with this. Kind of like when teams like SMU complain about missing the big dance. Would they really have won the tourney? The only argument that can be made would be if the Heat breeze through 3 rounds of cakewalks while the spurs are on the other end having had to play through Portland, Clippers, and OKC and are fatigued in the finals.

Hawaii is an extreme example, and I again... CA to NY is 3 hour time difference, not much to overcome, obviously you keep in mind the playoff start times.

HI to CA is a 2 or 3 hour time difference, depending on time of year. It makes a difference. I cannot emphasize this. Albeit private jet vs commercial travel but I still believe we are fooling ourselves thinking the travel doesn't mean anything. maybe it is the altitude for long durations of time but flying takes a toll. Do you know anyone that is a pilot or flight attendant?

Haha, we just can't agree Pats. I think NFL is perfect. Why? Parity! NBA Doesn't have that. NFL, winning your division means alot. There are times where there are injustices (see this past season) but for the most part, it's fine. Any team that makes the NFL playoffs has a legit chance to win it all, see all the 5/6 seeds that been in the Super Bowl last 5 years or so.... NBA that's not the case, the goal is to make the post season better. I want a well balanced, more interesting NBA Playoffs. I want the better teams in, because in NBA theres is a MASSIVE difference in the qulaity of teams. I don't want to see Hawks in the playoffs. Give me the Timberwolves instead who may have a legit chance of knocking off someone.

There's a big difference, Maybe SMU was the 50th best team maybe the 65th. IDK but your right.

But the difference is the Eastern Conference playoffs are a complete and utter joke. There's absolutely NO excitement there for rounds. Which in the NBA that means a MONTH+ before an interesting Eastern Conference playoff game takes place... That's what I believe would fix. Miami vs Pacers in Round 2, which is what, late April, or Miami vs Pacers in Eastern Finals that we wait for until Late May... when these two teams have basically a bye (make no mistake, it is a bye for 2 rounds) while the Western is stackeddddd

I know an NBA player, West Coast team who I met with for drinks while he was on the East who told me the travel doesn't matter (<)< (edit, not that road games don't matter but the travel itself he doesn't mind, he even enjoys the travel)

drop the name defy. (also, I don't know if they would admit it but I just seen it all my life. hard to convince me otherwise. Maybe NBA types are more able to get around this than college kids?)

I dunno, cycles come and go I'm fine with it.

I think for gambling your idea is better though with more unique matchups be tougher for oddsmakers to make lines in some instances.

Also top 16 teams there would be less series where a team is just -2500 which is cool. In a vacuum it sounds ok but the travel and everything would be brutal.

oh I don't disagree with you that much just kinda indifferent but could see it being worse.

Repeat matchups tend to be good for the game too like I've said in thread...
