only three more days left at the surfside meet before i take a little vacation from the horses as the meet moves to smog-infested pomona for ferris-wheel racing around the bullring.
r2: grand gamble. chips n dips is going to be a short price, and i want to find a way to beat her. 'chips doesn't have any speed and speed kills in these maiden claimers. i backed wiki wiki magic last time, and although she continues to train like she can run, i'm off her today and on to grand gamble. don't like backing 4 year old maidens vs. younger, but no mattter, 'gamble gets an outside draw and should show some speed. i'm gambling that she can put it together in her second start back from a layoff.
r3: tradition rocks. i'm not entirely sure how this beautifully bred son of champion miler spinning world is going to get beat in here. the others are really just claimers and the one back classer, special matter has a layoff to deal with.
r4: the match race. 90% of the time, speed kills and there's little doubt that woke up dreamin' will have the lead. HOWEVER, woke up dreaming -despite being by horse of the year holy bull- doesn't strike me as a router. at 2/5, i'd make a small play on pval and chester's choice.
r6: garden in the rain. this is the worst grade 2 event i've seen in a long time. usually when there's a small field in graded stakes, it's a result of one horse being dominant and scaring people off. not true here as all of these are glorified allowance runners. 'rain has been freshened since running in the bog at lone star and should crush this field.
r7: lady nichola. although she's a daugher of ap indy, i think 'nichola has a touch of speed, and while i'm scared of better knot, who has been training like a beast but was scratched out of a 40k maiden claimer last week by the vet, i will back the lady b/c i really can't back uppity kitty with any confidence. kitty will be odds on and blew an easy lead in her last, so let's try to beat her.
r8: miss houdini. sure tucked away and victory encounter are proven at the distance; no matter, 'houdini is the most talented miss in here and she should get a beautiful stalking trip with gary stevens. she's a grade 1 winner on this course and she's third choice! what a country.
r10: young pioneer. machowsky is a killer with these types and this one looks ready to rumble in his first start back from a layoff. the favorites in here are no great shakes and i may stand alone with nakatani in the finale here as he's had a steady string of works and all systems look ready to fire.
good luck.
